SIKKIM MOUNTAIN BIKING COMPETITION The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, organized special event the SIKKIM MOUNTAIN BIKING COMPETITION of 65 KMS From Gangtok to Rumtek, East Sikkim.on 25th November 2018 to commemorate the 150 years anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, father of our Nation and also celebrate India Year of Adventure 2018. Cycling as a sport is still in its infancy in Sikkim in comparison to other Indian states and Department of Sports & Youth Affairs organized this competition, as it is felt necessary to promote and encourage this sport and activity in the state in tribute to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. The event itself was a huge success with 40 participants from all districts of Sikkim and riders from other state and country like Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Bhutan & Nepal. A few surprises were the unexpected show of talent in this event from Mr. Asim Subba, West Sikkim, who completed the whole 65 kms in 2 hours 40 minutes, a record timing in Sikkim. Without such events such talent and determination would surely not have been recognized. Additional surprises were the very young riders, who showed not only a love for the sport but determination and courage in finishing 65 kms. Such talent if nurtured and guided can reap awards & laurels for the state in the future. The event showed that our youth have the necessary talents and interest and only requires the proper guidance, training and platforms so that they can reach their full potential. • Sports India and World
SPORTS INDIA AND WORLD World Cup Cricket History The idea of organising a World Cup of cricket was mooted and agreed to in principle in 1971 when such a proposal was discussed at a meeting of the International Cricket Conference in London. However, due to various commitments the tournaments could not be staged until 1975 when the original plan of a South African team's visit to England fell through following opposition to the country's racial policy. England's Prudential Assurance Company came forward with sponsorship and for three consecutive years - 1975, 1979 and 1983, the one-day limited overs cricket tournament was held in England. It became famous as the Prudential Cup. In the first two tournaments, apart from the six full members of the International Cricket Conference (England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India and Pakistan), Sri Lanka, before being elevated to Test status in 1981, had joined East Africa in 1975 and Canada in 1979 (two top teams among the associate members) to complete the groups in the tournaments proper. The West Indies, under Clive Lloyd, not only won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 but in true Calypso style they produced sparkling cricket and confirmed their unassailable supremacy in this game. India broke the West Indian stranglehold in 1983 to open a new chapter in the brief annals of this prestigious tournament. • Sports and Adventure Activities
Sports and adventure activities Despite the mounting evidence of the benefits of Sports, Physical Activities and Adventure, there continues to be a general under-appreciation of the importance of sports and adventure activity - both to individuals and the wider society. Whenever the importance of these things are discussed, the discussion always tends to get narrowed down to a range of issues, such as obesity and coronary heart disease. Physical health is important, undoubtedly, but it is not more than a fraction of what is supposed to be the full benefit of sports and adventurous activities. Since the positive outcomes of sports and adventure activity are not autonomous and disconnected - they reinforce each other - the true value of sports and/or activity can only be properly appreciated from a very broad holistic perspective. Sport and adventure are embodied in the ability to take part in sporting and other physical activities, and that these activities produce value that are realized through increased well-being, educational achievement and, ultimately, economic value. This is not to suggest that the importance of sports and physical activity is overlooked by policymakers or the wider society. Indeed, there is increasing acceptance that regular sports and physical activities form an important and necessary feature of healthy living and development precisely because of the consequences of inactivity. Sports, Physical and adventure activities and NCC go hand in hand, these are a substantial part of NCC that usually get overshadowed by normal people but NCC knowing the significance of it, never ignores it and always encourages cadets in doing so.
