  • Understanding Meaningful Cinema
[ VOLUME 5 I ISSUE 3 I JULY– SEPT 2018] E ISSN 2348 –1269, PRINT ISSN 2349-5138 Understanding Meaningful Cinema Dr. Debarati Dhar Assistant Professor, Vivekananda School of Journalism and Mass Communication Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, New Delhi. Received: June 23 , 2018 Accepted: August 03, 2018 Introduction: Cinephilia Cineastes say that films help the audience to reflect on the divergent cultures and justify the presence of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic audience in view of this divergence. The language of cinema continues to evolve in a living tradition and the filmmakers trace the ever-changing language of this medium from the silent era to the talkies, from the days when screen went from black and white and got colorized. Emotional appeal, subtlety in its communication and most importantly throwing a new light on the world, as we know it counted a lot to the audience. Filmmakers now work across the spectrum of media including painting, novels, theatre and opera. In the global cinema, in general, the production has become more accessible today, the qualitative aspects have sadly given way to quantity and so, films often miss emotional and spiritual richness. The world is a closer place today. Perhaps it is cinema that helps to blur the boundaries. The concept of film as a commercial art form started in fifties. The fifties and sixties are generally known as the golden period of Indian cinema not only because masterpieces were being made, but because of the popularity of the songs of that era. One of the distinctive features of Indian cinema is its narrative structure.

The Occasional Publication series is published for the India International Centre by Cmde. (Retd.) R. Datta. Designed and produced by FACET Design. Tel.: 91-11-24616720, 24624336. Pandit Ravi Shankar—Tansen of our Times Pandit Ravi Shankar died a few months ago, just short of his 93rd birthday on 7 April. So it is opportune that we remember a man whom I have rather unabashedly called the Tansen of our times. Pandit Ravi Shankar was easily the greatest musician of our times and his death marks not only the transience of time itself, but it also reminds us of the glory that was his life and the immortality of his legacy. In the passing of Robindro Shaunkar Chowdhury, as he was called by his parents, on 11 December in San Diego, California, we cherish the memory of an extraordinary genius whose life and talent spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. It crossed all continents, it connected several genres of human endeavour, it uplifted countless hearts, minds and souls. Very few Indians epitomized Indian culture in the global imagination as this charismatic Bengali Brahmin, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Born in 1920, Ravi Shankar not only straddled two centuries but also impacted many worlds—the East, the West, the North and the South, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern.

  • The Gwalior Gharana of Khayal
THE GWALIOR GHARANA OF KHAYAL SusheeJa Misra The different gharanas in Khayal-singing have not only helped to preserve and perpetuate the older traditions through an unbroken lineage of Guru shishya-paratnpara, but also added much colour and infinite variety to Hindustani Music. In an article on "A spects of Karnatic Music", the late Sri G.N. Balasubramaniam (a famous performing artiste and scholar) wrote almost longingly:- "Unlike the Karnatak system, the Hindustani system is more elastic and flexible and comparatively free from inhibitions and restrictions. For instance, in the North there are several Gharanas--each one handling one and the same raga differently. In the South everywhere, every raga is ren dered alike". It is this scope for variety, choice of suitable style, and flights of fancy that have maintained the popul arity of the Khayal up till now. The precursors of the Khayal also used to be rendered in different styles. In ancient granthas, we come across mention of different types of "Geetis" such as "Shudhdha", "Bhinna", "Goudi", "Vesari", and "Saadhaarant", When the golden age of the Dhrupad began (during the Middle Ages), Dhrupad-gayan also had developed four "Baants" (meaning styles, or schools) namely, :-"Goudi" or "Gobarhari", "Daggur", "Khandar", and "Nowhar". When the majestic and ponderous Dhrupad had to give place to the .classico-romantic Khayal-form, the latter was developed and perfected into various styles which came to be known as "Gharanas", These "gharanas" gave an attractive variety to Khayal-singing,-each "gharana" developing its own distinctive features, although all of them were deeply rooted in a common underlying tradition or "Susampradaaya".
