TOURISM UNDERGRADUATE COURSE OF STUDY

GEOGRAPHY 3RD YEAR COURSE MORNING SHIFT ANNUAL COURSE TIME: THURSDAYS, 2 HOURS 54 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS PROFESSOR: CRISTIAN CALOMARDE

1- DIRECTIONAL OBJECTIVES 1) To recognize the importance of getting acquainted with the different national environments for the student future professional development. 2) To establish the existing interrelations among the ecologic systems and the socio- economic configurations, which determine a specific spatial organization in our country. 3) To differentiate the local/regional ways of life and the touristic development poles. 4) To develop a scale of values in order to conserve and enhance Argentinean natural and cultural heritage. 5) To demonstrate the relevant contributions of adventure and ecotourism to the environmen- tal social, cultural and economic well-being of destinations and local communities.

OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES 1) To incorporate the basic concepts of the geographical science. 2) To manage the available geographical resources in order to locate touristic areas. 3) To define regional geographical spaces emphasizing the touristic interest of each. 2- UNITS

UNIT 1: Geographic location of our country. Limits and boundaries: description and observation of access to neighboring countries. Traditional, ecologic, adventure Tourism. Protected areas. Natural and historic monuments. Archeological and paleontological sites. Geopolitical position of our country. MERCOSUR.

UNIT 2: The Northwest. Aridity and cultural uniqueness. Location. Provinces. Tough and manageable setting: Puna, valleys and ravines, sub-Andean sierras. Climate types and biomes. Endorheic and arheic basins. Socioeconomic setting: a) Spanish presence: consequences in the spatial organization; b) Colonizing movements; c) Subsistence and commercial economy; d) Transport and communi- cations; e) Commerce and barter. Touristic areas: a) The Puna: its ranches and its churches; b) ravines: its traditions; c) Sub- Andean Sierras: ecotourism; d) Big cities: landscape and cultural heritage; e) Regional archi- tecture: the Inca train and the oriental route; f) Festivities; g) Protected areas; h) Archaeologi- cal sites. UNIT 3: , the and the oasis. Location. Manageable setting: the Andes, Andean foothills and flatlands. The waterspout (Desagüade- ro) system: irrigation and energy. Socioeconomic setting: a) urban hubs and their area of influence; b) viticulture circuits: oasis; c) Mining settlements; d) Accessibility. Touristic Areas: a) the high mountain; b) the marginal flatlands; c) Payunia; d) thermal re- gions; e) ski centers; f) archaeological and paleontological sites; g) big cities; h) adventure and ecologic tourism.

UNIT 4: , demographic emptiness and hidden beauty. Location. Manageable setting: the Andes and the Extraandina plateau. Socioeconomic Setting: a) the aborigines and the Silesians’ work; b) the Welsh in Chubut; c) the late settlement process in Santa Cruz; d) the English in ; e) Fruit farm cir- cuits in Alto Valle; f) Huge ovine ranches; g) mining settlements; h) commercial fishing; j) in- dustrial areas; k) routs and access. Touristic Areas: a) the coast and the mountains b) glacier lakes; c) beach towns; d) seasonal centers: thermal towns y ski centers; e) protected areas; f) alternative and potential tourism: Malvinas Islands, Isla de los Estados and Antarctica.

UNIT 5: The Pampa, main centre of the country. Location. Manageable Setting: the depressed, undulated and high Pampa; Dry and humid Pampa. Del Plata basin. Socioeconomic Setting: a) Conquest of the dessert; b) vaquerías and the great immigration; c) the great estancia; d) the diary, poultry and honey-making areas; d) industrial riverfront; e) services; f) access. Touristic Areas: a) Federal Capital and Greater metropolitan area of Buenos Aires’ cultural heritage; b) La Plata and surroundings; c) riverfront fluvial; d) waterfront: the Atlantic coast; e) Buenos Aires sierras and surrounding areas; f) sites with history; g) Marginal Pampa; g) protected areas; h) festivities. UNIT 6: The Northeast, the man and the river. Location. Manageable environments: Misiones, Paraná and Uruguay environments. The depressed Pampa. The bioclimatic succession. The Paraná River. Socioeconomic Setting: a) First ways of settlement: the missions, the Jewish gauchos and the agricultural colonies; b) aborigine settlements and the Colonizing period of the East c) ur- ban centers; e) commercial economy: industrial farming, fruit farming and silviculture; f) Shep- herding in the forest at Santiago del Estero’s border) forest settlements: quebracho and the timberyards; h) cotton single crop farming; i) communication and access. Touristic Areas: a) big cities; b) protected areas; c) the Parana and the Uruguay corridors: fishing and beach towns; d) Ranches in Corrientes; e) Jesuit ruins; f) traditions and legends; g) festivities; h) ecologic and seasonal tourism. UNIT 7: Sierras Pampeanas, environmental complexity. Location.

Manageable environments: sierras, flatlands, , hillsides and slopes. Sierras Pam- peanas’ endorheic basins. Socioeconomic Setting: a) colonization and settlement process; b) traditions and associated to the economy ways of life; c) industrial parks; d) communication and access. Touristic Areas: a) Cordoba: Sierras Grandes, Sierras Chicas, Punilla and Calamuchita Val- leys, Translasierra, Camino Real and Mar Chiquita; b) San Luis; c) Catamarca: artcrafts and mining traditions; d) The flatlands of La Rioja and the caudillos route; e) Protected areas; f) festivities.
