Oui, Opeth et Anathema assument cela fait déjà 50 ans que les Scorpions, groupe teutonique s’il est, écument la planète rock. Reconnus sur les cinq continents – une performance rarement égalée dans le milieu –, ils avaient pourtant décidé de faire une tournée d’adieux. Vu son succès, ces vieux baroudeurs ont choisi de LAURENT KLEISL remettre ça. Sur la route comme sur disque, puisqu’ils viennent de commettre un nouvel album. Certes, «Return to forever» (distribution Sony Une voix caverneuse, d’outre- Music) ne révolutionnera pas le genre. Pas grave! A l’image d’AC/DC et tombe, un râle guttural. ANATHEMA “Weather Systems” Genre: Melodic Atmospheric Progressive Rock Kscope If previous album “We’re Here Because We’re Here” was a superb return for Anathema after a seven-year hiatus, “Weather Systems”, the Liverpudlian quintet’s ninth, is utterly and completely magnificent. In fact, to do this record justice is hard and to quote the opening spoken word segment of “Internal Landscapes”, the achingly beautiful closing song which begins with one man’s account of his near-death experience, “as a matter of fact, it’s impossible to describe. Verbally, it cannot be expressed; it is something that becomes you and you become it.” That, in a nutshell, is this album to a tee. The Cavanagh brothers et al, have never seemingly found it difficult to create music that’s deep, emotional and moving, and this album is certainly no different. If anything though, it resets the bar and sets it astronomically high. Such is the majesty and intensity, yet simplicity of the music on “Weather Systems”, tracks like “Untouchable Part 2” and “The Lost Child” have moved me to tears on more than one occasion and I have no problem in admitting that. In a world that is more and more intent on immediacy and vacuous sentiment, Anathema stand as bastions of the polar opposite. Kicking this masterpiece off is “Untouchable Part 1”, an urgent, fast-paced acoustic-guitar led piece that sets the tone for the entire record by featuring some gorgeous melodies that tug at the heartstrings. And then, with the aforementioned “Untouchable Part 2”, Anathema slow things right down and unleash their not-so-secret weapon in the form of female vocalist Lee Douglas.

Dead is dead: Perspectives on the Meaning of Death in Depressive Suicidal Black Metal Music through Musical Representations Mehmet Selim Yavuz MU5599 Special Study: Dissertation Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MMus in Advanced Musical Studies Royal Holloway, University of London September 2015 Abstract Death plays an important role in human life, and there have been many theories about how this inevitability affects human thought, and social life. According to anthropological studies, death and death-related phenomena, including rituals, music, the meaning of death, are based on the originating cultures. This makes depressive suicidal black metal music an interesting case study, because of its inherent involvement with death ideas. This paper focuses on this music genre and the examples existing in the repertory to investigate and provide a view on the meanings of death. Wilson argues that ‘the mourning and melancholy of black metal is essentially […] [a] mourning of death –not the death of someone, or something or some lost past, but for death itself’, and the voice in black metal reveals that the only meaning is the meaning of death. Doom metal, when lyrically analysed, deals with ideas of melancholy, death, suicide, grief, and loss. ‘Ontological security’ developed by Anthony Giddens emerges as one of the crucial theories in order to show black and doom metal songs from a taboo breaking perspective. Mellor defines ‘ontological security’ as ‘persons having a sense of order and continuity in relation to events in which they participate’. ‘THE BARGHEST O' WHITBY’: (A GENEALOGICAL STUDY OF) DEATH/DOOM METAL MUSIC(AL) NETWORK IN NORTHERN ENGLAND MEHMET SELIM YAVUZ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Leeds Beckett University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2018 ii Abstract Metal music has existed in one form or another for about half a century. While the musical style and the culture started out in a relatively unified way, with the ‘extreme turn’ of late 80s and 90s, metal culture stratified. Doom metal, being one of the oldest styles in this newly formed structure, became even more fragmented. Through amalgamations with other music styles or as further alterations on these amalgamations. I call these styles extreme doom. Death/doom is such a style. These smaller styles in metal culture have so far been investigated hierarchically. However, the implication that a hierarchy has is problematic in this context. Metal music studies is a budding field, so, we need to think more critically about the way we conceptualise the history of metal academically in these early years. Yet, so far, this stratification, with its hierarchy, has not been challenged or even discussed in detail. Scholarship often mentions these so-called ‘sub-genres’ uncritically. In order to challenge this idea, there needs to be a new model. However, because of the size and breadth of metal culture, one single work cannot come even close to covering the styles existing today.
