Current as of April 21, 2020 OUR PRAYER FROM PRESIDENT JIM BOLTHOUSE

Lord God, You are mighty in power, faithful in mercy, and gracious in comfort. This nation we are blessed to call home has been beset with political divisions and with the scourge of a dreadful virus. Some people have mocked You and the efficacy of prayer. Yet we know that You, O Father, hear us when we cry out to You. Our hearts are tender toward our nation and toward those who are in authority over us. Give extraordinary wisdom to them during this treacherous period; guide them in the way You have decreed since before time began for us, Your children. Your Glory and Majesty shine over the whole Earth, in Jesus Name. Amen. AMERICA: A NATION FOUNDED THROUGH PRAYER

“You know, the Bible tells us to be faithful in prayer; that the ‘effective and fervent of a righteous [people] availeth much,’ that we’re to persevere in prayer; and that, in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, we are to present our requests to God. I believe that prayer and are the thread that runs through every era of American history. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress established a day of fasting and prayer. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln urged Americans to pray so that, as he said, ‘the united cry of the nation [would] be heard on high and answered with blessing.’ As the President said just two years ago... “We are a nation of faith.” And I can assure you... in this White House, under this President, we believe in prayer. Today we pray for America. And as we pray, let’s pray with confidence, as was inscribed in those ancient words millennia ago, that if His people, who are called by His name will humble themselves and pray, that He’ll do like He’s always done through the long and storied history of this nation: He’ll hear from Heaven and He’ll heal this land, this one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” - Vice President Mike Pence PRAYERS OF PAST NATIONAL LEADERS

I now make it my earnest prayer that God would have the in His holy protection, that … he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Christian humility and pacific temper of mind, …and without an humble imitation of whose example of these things, we can never hope to be a happy nation.

– George Washington

While recognizing that the freedom to choose a godly path is the essence of liberty, as a Nation we cannot ut hope that more of our citizens would, through prayer, come into a closer relationship with their Maker.

O God, in these turbulent days when fear and doubt are mounting high, give us broad visions, penetrating eyes, and power of endurance. … O God, have mercy upon us. Forgive us for what we could have been but failed to be. Give us the intelligence to know your will. Give us the courage to do your will. Give us the devotion to love your will. In the name and spirit of Jesus, we pray.

– Martin Luther King, Jr. GOD’S WILL BE DONE

There were deep and troubling times in Israel’s history in the prophet Habakkuk’s day. Darkness and disobedience permeated the culture of the people of God. Hope and help seemed very far away as the prophet cried out to God. The Lord’s answer was not expected. He used a wicked, idol-worshipping nation’s army to come and execute judgment on His people. God used Habakkuk to pour out the “woes” that would come to pass. Habakkuk found them hard to believe. But then, in the middle of all the woes, God paused to extend a profound promise—He would eventually be seen in the face of Jesus Christ and the knowledge of Him would be spread by Christ-followers until Jesus returns. For the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the water covers the sea! God used the Apostle Paul to echo that promise in the New Testament.

For God, who said, ‘Light shall shine out of darkness,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. - 2 Corinthians 4:6 2020 PRAYER GUIDE

The History of The National Day of Prayer On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed legislation establishing the National Day of Prayer in law in the United States. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended the law, designating that the National Day of Prayer should fall on the first Thursday of May each year. Every president since Truman has signed a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray. Congress designated it as a time when people are asked “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.”
