Erasmus Fowke
1 ERASMUS FOWKE Erasmus Fowke was born in or near Quarndon, Derbyshire and baptised July 13, 1794. His parents were Thomas Fowke and Rebecca Wallstone Fowke, whose first child was Anna (or Hannah?), baptised in 1781, then Thomas, baptised in 1792, and last Rebecca, baptised in 1796. A Job is mentioned in the parish records as the son of Thomas and Mary, and the name Mary may be a mistake, as the family recollection is that Job was Erasmus’s brother. He was baptised in 1793. The baptismal dates were not necessarily close to the children’s birth dates. Quarndon was a tiny place, only a few short miles from Derby, but during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries it was at least moderately well known in England for its healing waters. Pigot’s 1835 Directory, found on the GENUKI Internet site, states that in 1821 Quarndon had just 438 inhabitants and in 1831, 487. It also mentions that, “Sir John Curzon, in 1725, bequeathed an annuity of L20. for the support of a free school, for a limited number of children of poor parents residing in Quarndon, Kedleston and Weston.” Perhaps this was the school which provided Erasmus and his brothers with their education. There is nothing to indicate that the Fowke family had a lot of money. All three sons left the area to seek their fortunes. There is a very amusing story about a certain “Nanny Fowke” from Quarndon. It is quite unlikely that Nanny Fowke was not related to our Fowkes, given the small size of Quarndon. -

A review Ishita Ahuja,JensRohloff, Atle Magnar Bones* Department of Biology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Realfagbygget, NO-7491 Trondheim, Norway (Accepted 5 July 2009) Abstract – Brassica crops are grown worldwide for oil, food and feed purposes, and constitute a significant economic value due to their nutritional, medicinal, bioindustrial, biocontrol and crop rotation properties. Insect pests cause enormous yield and economic losses in Brassica crop production every year, and are a threat to global agriculture. In order to overcome these insect pests, Brassica species themselves use multiple defence mechanisms, which can be constitutive, inducible, induced, direct or indirect depending upon the insect or the degree of insect attack. Firstly, we give an overview of different Brassica species with the main focus on cultivated brassicas. Secondly, we describe insect pests that attack brassicas. Thirdly, we address multiple defence mechanisms, with the main focus on phytoalexins, sulphur, glucosinolates, the glucosinolate-myrosinase system and their breakdown products. In order to develop pest control strategies, it is important to study the chemical ecology, and insect behaviour. We review studies on oviposition regulation, multitrophic interactions involving feeding and host selection behaviour of parasitoids and predators of herbivores on brassicas. Regarding oviposition and trophic interactions, we outline insect oviposition behaviour, the importance of chemical stimulation, oviposition-deterring pheromones, glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, nitriles, and phytoalexins and their importance towards pest management. -

Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed. -

Area of study: Arge ochropus larvae were collected from Rosa canina in Bartın province. Material and Methods: Larvae collecting damages on Rosa canina species, which are distributed in different localities and were brought to the laboratory. Observations were continued and photographed under a microscope. Main results: Arge ochropus (Gmelin, 1790) is a significant pest of cultivated and wild roses in Turkey. Leaf surface is consumed as a result of intense damage of larvae and this affects growth and blooming in the plant. It was observed that the larvae collected from the field were infected by a new parasitoid in the laboratory. This tachinid parasitoid was defined as Vibrissina turrita. Research highlights: Vibrissina turrita (Meigen, 1824) was detected in Turkey as a Tachinidae fauna and Arge ochropus parasitoid for the first time in this study. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. Aquest mateix autor, en un treball posterior de conjunt sobre els Epermeniidae ibèrics (Gaedike 1971), eleva a vuit el nombre de tàxons coneguts, cens augmentat a onze en el darrer catàleg de Vives Moreno (2014), nou dels quals pertanyen al gènere Epermenia Hübner, 1824, i dos al gènere Ochromolopis Hübner, 1824. -

Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).
