Big Changes & Big Opportunities Demand for CPA services is strong and resilient. But big changes in business, from globalization and shifting workplace demographics, means just one thing: only the most nimble will succeed.

Those themes are pointed findings of the multi-year, recently released American Institute of CPAs Horizons 2025 study that surveyed upwards of 6,000 CPA thought leaders, examining work trends shaping the profession. In the arsenal of best business practices, one rule supersedes all others: embrace change and give it a prominent seat beside the CEO. Better still, be the change leader.

Shinn & Co is doing both.

“Our focus is strategic,” explains Garrett Shinn, a second generation Partner at the firm. “We’ve reinvented our internal service lines to further the professional development of our team. We’re fortunate; our competitors cut back when the recession hit, while our firm grew through empowering the next generation.”

The firm’s multi-generational approach and distinctive values attracts a millennial workforce. It gives Shinn & Co a huge competitive advantage in the talent marketplace.

“Everyone in the firm has an entrepreneurial spirit, and every communication with a client purposefully steers them to productivity and profitability,” explains Christy Cardillo, a partner in Shinn & Co. “We go above and beyond.”

Cardillo honed expertise early in life, attending business meetings with entrepreneurial aunts and grandmothers. The experience serves her clients extremely well.

Shinn & Co are agilely recruiting fresh talent. Policies supporting professional development and a bona-fide open door culture that generates collaboration are employment magnets.

“We make big investments in opportunities for lifelong learning and collaboration – concepts that hold great gravity for the new workforce. Thirty percent of our staff is millennials,” says Shinn. “The industry is graying but we’re moving in the opposite direction.”

Shinn & Co is leveraging technology – another strong theme in the Horizons 2025 report – gaining millennials’ attention, while also serving the dual purpose of expanding the firm’s capacity to serve clients who rely on the firm’s leadership to help them steer their own businesses through the whitewaters of rapid technological change.

With offices in Bradenton and Sarasota, the firm has an unparalleled lifestyle advantage. “You can spend a Sunday on a beach ranked number one in the world and easily be at work on Monday,” says Shinn. “It’s pretty sweet.”

SHINN & CO 1001 3rd Avenue West #500 | Bradenton, FL 34205 I 941-747-0500 | www.shinnandco.com The State of the State As the Chamber advocates for our business members we like to keep our finger on the pulse of public policy and top level decision making in the state. We were pleased to have the opportunity to engage in discussion with two of the state’s most influential leaders and members of the Florida Cabinet, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam and CFO Jeff Atwater.

Commissioner Putnam spoke to 200 members from the Manatee Chamber, Sarasota Chamber and Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance last month. He emphasized the importance in taking care of Florida’s waters, education system and agriculture industry, in addition to leading a discussion regarding workforce development needs, infrastructure, transportation, and millennials carrying our future. His vision of Florida is not just a place to retire, but a destination spot and “jumping off point for the American dream.”

CFO Atwater provided Chamber guests with a very unique and informative presentation on the Florida economy. He led the group through a detailed presentation regarding Florida's ability to maintain low taxes and limited debt through the Great Recession and beyond. Compared to our Federal Government, and peer states such as California, , New York and Texas, Florida has fared well and positioned itself to have a strong business climate without taking on significant debt. Jim Boxold Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Help us welcome Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jim Boxold for a special luncheon as he visits Manatee and Sarasota counties. This is your opportunity to ask questions about your roadway concerns and future priorities.

As Secretary, Jim Boxold is focused on improving the transportation network to benefit residents, visitors and Florida’s economic growth. Under Governor Scott, the state has significantly increased its transportation investments, providing the largest work program in the department’s 100-year history three years in a row. These investments are paying off as Florida’s transportation infrastructure is consistently ranked among the best in the country by the U.S. Chamber Foundation.

This event, originally scheduled in October, was postponed due to the Secretary’s responsibilities after Hurricane Matthew. Don’t miss this opportunity to bring your transportation questions and concerns to his attention.

PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County is part of a Florida-based network of 19 PACE Centers serving middle and high school aged girls who are deemed at-risk for juvenile delinquency and vulnerable to sex trafficking. PACE’s mission is to provide girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy. PACE values all girls, believing each one deserves an opportunity to find her voice, achieve her potential and celebrate a life defined by responsibility, dignity, serenity and grace. Since inception in 1985, PACE has helped more than 39,000 girls change their life trajectory and chart a path toward success.

Reyna M., who shared her story at the Chamber Breakfast, is a perfect example of a PACE Manatee success story. At PACE, she gained confidence and learned to advocate for herself. The first in her family to graduate, Reyna asked if she could address the audience after her graduation ceremony in August. “Look at me,” she shared with those in attendance while still wearing her cap and gown. “Everyone told me I should just drop out; that I would never be more than a farm worker. But look at me now! I did it, and you can too.” Never afraid of hard work, Reyna completed her education while working her way up to management at McDonald’s. Next month she will be moving to the McDonald’s Corporate office in Tampa and beginning college in the spring - determined to be successful and use her voice to influence others.

To learn more about PACE, please visit our website at PaceCenter.org or follow us on Facebook, “PACE Manatee.”
