SAVOY COMMUNICATIONS Jim Van Slyke Releases New Studio Recording The Sedaka Sessions Neil Sedaka Duets on Two Cuts Los Angeles – August 4- LML Music is excited to announce the August 9th release of award winning performer Jim Van Slyke’s new recording, The Sedaka Sessions. The disc is a joyful, powerful tribute to one of pop music’s living legends, featuring two duets with Neil Sedaka himself. The CD showcases music from Van Slyke's critically acclaimed Sedaka Show, which Mr. Sedaka first saw him perform at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City. Impressed and touched, Sedaka offered his assistance and a ringing endorsement: “Jim Van Slyke is something quite special. I’ve heard others sing my songs, but nobody has moved me more than Jim. The voice, the stage presence…just brilliant. He is a songwriter’s dream!” – Neil Sedaka, 2011 The Sedaka Sessions repertoire was culled from 50+ years of Sedaka’s legendary collaborations with Howard Greenfield and Phil Cody (the single exception being “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing” which was written with Roger Atkins). Van Slyke's fresh readings of the timeless tunes make you wonder why you don’t hear brilliant songs like “The Hungry Years”, “Laughter in the Rain” and “Solitaire” more often. The icing on the cake is Mr. Sedaka’s appearance the CD, with duets on “Brighton” and “The Immigrant.” Van Slyke worked extensively on the repertoire of the live Sedaka Show with co- creator, Brian Lane Green, and then musical arranger, Tim DiPasqua, sharing hundreds of song possibilities and ideas about pacing, tempos, lyrics etc.

  • Tapestry”—Carole King (1971) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Tapestry”—Carole King (1971) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label Carole King There are few artists—of any genre, of any era, of either gender—who have had as profound an effect on popular music as Carole King. Alone or with a co-writer (especially her one-time husband Gerry Goffin), King has written such resounding hits as “The Loco-Motion,” “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman”), “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Oh, No Not My Baby,” “Go Away Little Girl,” “Up on the Roof,” “One Fine Day,” “I’m Into Something Good,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” among others. Considered alone, such a body of work would be enough to make King one of the great, original talents of rock and pop, but, for her, her ample 1960’s songwriting success was only a prelude. In 1971, King crafted one of the most enduring and influential albums of all time, a perfect showcase for her songwriting talents and performing abilities. Her album, “Tapestry,” was produced by Lou Adler and released on the Ode label. It contained the songs “I Feel the Earth Move,” “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Where You Lead,” and “You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman).” The album would go on to rank on the “Billboard” album chart for over 300 weeks. Four of its cuts would become major hits. It would win the Grammy that year for “Album of the Year” as well as Grammys for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance,” “Record of the Year” (for “It’s Too Late”) and “Song of the Year” (for “You’ve Got a Friend”).

(This was first published in Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies, vol 27, no 3, 2009, pp. 102-127) Jews Dreaming of Acceptance: From the Brill Building to Suburbia with Love ‘This is the way I always dreamed it would be The way it is When you are holding me.’ ‘I Can Hear Music’ Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector (1966) Ken Emerson reminds us that the ‘Brill Building sound’ actually came not only from the Brill Building at 1619 Broadway but also, and at least as importantly, from 1650 Broadway.1 Indeed, the bulk of the composers I will focus on in this article worked at 1650 Broadway where, from May 1958, Aldon Music was located. This music publishing enterprise was started by twenty-one year old Don Kirshner and forty-two year old Al Nevins who had played with the Three Suns. They immediately signed Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield and, by 1962, employed eighteen composers, all between the ages of nineteen and twenty-six. These included the composing pairs most associated with the ‘Brill Building sound’: Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, in addition to Sedaka and Greenfield. As Mick Brown remarks in his biography of Phil Spector with only slight exaggeration: ‘There wasn’t a writer at Aldon who wasn’t Jewish.’2 In an important article on the legacy of the Brill Building music, Ian Inglis writes that: ‘while it may be difficult to argue that there was a specific Brill Building “sound”, it has been noted that certain themes and components do recur in many of the songs.

Ultimately, this study argues, the relationship between commercial film and popular music led, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to the emergence of New Hollywood, a term which encompasses both aesthetic and economic considerations, and which still describes contemporary commercial film production. This thesis traces the origins of New Hollywood back to the late 1920s and the advent of talking motion pictures. During this period issues surrounding the licensing of musical copyrights for inclusion in films led the major Hollywood studios to invest heavily in music publishing, so as to absorb the processes of music composition into the established studio system. After buying the key publishing firms on Tin Pan Alley, the studios soon learned that cross-media ownership enabled them to spread financial risk across interrelated commercial products.
