    Q) WHOLE NUMBER 180 (Vol. 36, No.2) April 1980 ---------------------------- Franc!a~ Colonies "f£. Philatelist USPS ¢::~077110 ON THE USE OF THE 'Tn-IN-TRIANGLE MARK ON POSTAGE STAMPS Roberl G. Stone Introduction of the T Cachets The T-in-triangle mark of France and colonies to indicate postage is due was introduced in the early 1800s in France, but not extensively used until after GPU/UPU came in, and in the colonies it appeared around 1876. Ap parently, the UPU rules for marking covers at origin to show that additional postage is due at destination, on international mail, stimulated the French and colonial postal administrations to supply nearly all offices with the T-in triangle. At the same time they decided to make it the practice to apply the T also on domestic mail; which was probably seen to be desirable because the colonies as a group had adhered to the UPU separately from France, and mail between colonies and France had something of the character of international mail. The UPU had not yet recommended use of postage-due stamps as a means of collecting the due charges, and the early French postage-due stamps were limited to local domestic mail. In 1881 France finally issued dues stamps for general use on all types of insufficiently franked mail. Several colonies issued locally-printed dues stamps for domestic mail only, between 1876 and the 1880s. In 1884 the General Issues of dues for the colonies were first printed and made available to those colonies that requested them. From 1905 on some colonies were supplied definitive issues of due~ but the General Issues were still used someplaces until the 19208.

COMPANY A, 276TH INFANTRY IN WORLD WAR II FRANK H. LOWRY Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number 94-072226 Copyright © 1991, 1994,1995 by Frank H Lowry Modesto, California All rights reserved ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This writing was started in 1945 in Europe following the cessation of hostilities that brought about an end to World War II. Many of the contributors were still together and their wartime experiences were fresh in their memories. It is the first hand account of the men of Company A, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division which made history by living and participating in the bitter combat of the Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. I humbly acknowledge my gratitude to the many veterans of those campaigns who provided valuable contributions to this book. A special note of appreciation goes to the following former soldiers of Company A who contributed significantly to this work. Without their input and guidance, this book could not have been written. Richard Armstrong, Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota Russell Causey, Sanford, North Carolina Burton K. Drury, Festus, Missouri John L. Haller, Columbia, South Carolina Daniel W. Jury, Millersburg, Pennsylvania Lloyd A. Patterson, Molalla, Oregon William J. Piper, Veguita, New Mexico Arthur E. Slover, Salem, Oregon Robert I. Wood, Dallas, Texas The assistance of Edmund C. Arnold, author and Chester F. Garstki, photographer of “The Trailblazers,” was very helpful in making it possible to illustrate and fit the military action of Company A into the overall action of the 70th Infantry Division. A word of thanks goes to Wolf T. Zoepf of Pinneberg, Germany for providing significant combat information from the point of view of those soldiers who fought on the other side.

The book demonstrates the importance of the Franco-Prussian War to our modern world and will make readers feel as if they are watching the conflict unfold.” – Michael Beschloss, author of The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman, and the Destruction of Hitler’s Germany, 1941–1945 (2002) “Wawro combines extensive archival research with perceptive critical in- sight to provide fresh perspectives on a subject dominated for almost a half-century by the work of Michael Howard. Medics of the Century: The History of the 325th Medical Battalion .. • • • • .. ..- • 1 THE BATTALION INSIGNIA ur insignia was designed by Mrs. Don S. Wenger, O wife of our former Commanding Officer, Lieute nant Colonel Don S. Wenger, and was approved by the War Department. To the casual observer it probably holds no significance, but there is a story behind it, a logical meaning and sequence to each of the individual symbols. Every unit must of necessity have a birthplace, a place where -it grows up and molds itself into an efficient organization. Our birthplace was Fort Jackson, South Carolina, which explains the inclusion of the State Tree, the "Palmetto", in the design. The serpents within the maroon "V" are taken froTh the staff of Aesculapius, the ancient Greek mythological god of healing, designa ting our service, the Medical Department. The "V" itselfstands for the "Victory" in which we were destined to participate. The "three" trees, "two" serpents and the "V" used as a roman numeral, combine to make up our numerical designation, "325". Our battalion motto, "To THE SERVICE OF ALL", is inscribed on the scroll at the base of the insignia. TO: n.e 325th Medicd Battalion; .1'0 447,U. S~ .AnI7. 1. In the middle of the broad, fertile plain that stretches away in the direction of the Rhine, a mile and a quarter from Mulhausen, the camp was pitched. In the fitful light of the overcast August day, beneath the lowering sky that was filled with heavy drifting clouds, the long lines of squat white shelter-tents seemed to cower closer to the ground, and the muskets, stacked at regular intervals along the regimental fronts, made little spots of brightness, while over all the sentries with loaded pieces kept watch and ward, motionless as statues, straining their eyes to pierce the purplish mists that lay on the horizon and showed where the mighty river ran. It was about five o'clock when they had come in from Belfort; it was now eight, and the men had only just received their rations.
