David Shackleton advised an amalgamation would not be successful if forced

Tony Felly queried the possibility of relegation

David Shackleton report the concern of relegation is that every club needs a flagship to promote

Geoff Clarke commented that other codes do not mind having promotion relegation

David Shackleton advised the constitution would have to change to allow Canterbury Cricket to do this.

Paul O'Grady mentioned people are not prepared to pay the cost of watching cricket David Shackleton advised Canterbury and New Zealand Cricket would be discussing the pricing of tickets

Bryce McKenzie emphasized people do want to watch cricket, but it's just the cost factor that discourages

Brian Hastings mentioned that it is critical for good crowds to attend the upcoming English tour

Jerard Cross questioned if Canterbury Cricket was bringing back the Cavaliers grade

David Shackleton advised this had not been talked about

Paul O'Grady commented that 4 grade would become the premier afternoon grade and should attract past senior cricket players

Ray Burgess thanked David Shackleton for his comments

Graham Barrett enquired into Bumside High Schools practice facilities and queried if the club will still let Burnside High School use our practice facilities

David Biddick reported that if predicted player numbers are correct then there will be enormous stress on the pitches and that discussions will be held with Burnside High School over this

Tim Saunders advised we need coaches for every team, much like rugby and that captains lack the authority of an older coach Mark Cosier advised we need to be taught how to play cricket

Tim Saunders mentioned that with extra finances we would be able to attract applicants

Tony Felly stated we need one head coach

David Biddick mentioned Brian Hastings has helped us in this role

David Shackleton advised Canterbury Cricket could be asked for coaches funding

y Tony Feely mentioned the upcoming centenary

Ray Burgess advised a separate committee would be formed this year to organise tl event

Dougal Timpson advised we should model our approach on Sydenhams "Friends o Cricket"

Treasurers Report for the Period ending 30 April 2002.

I am pleased to present to you the Treasurers Report, and the Statement of Cash Receipts and Payments covering the 13-month period from 1 April 2001 to 30 April 2002.

The change to the financial year to cover the period 1 May to 30 April was passed at the 2001 Annual General Meeting and so the accounts for the year just completed cover 13 months, and future years will cover the 12 monthly period.

As I have said in previous years, the ability of clubs to survive year by year with some certainty is all reliant on the cash available at any one time, and especially in our case the cash reserves that we carry forward into the winter months.

While making an "accounting suq)lus/deficit" is important from a technical point of view, having cash to pay our accounts on time and not having to be frugal is also important.

With this in mind our cash position over the year has improved to such an extent that while at the end of last season we had operating cash in the bank of $304, at the end of this season we had operating cash of $6,375.00.

With only operating cash of $304 in the bank at the start of the year the Committee arranged for an overdraft facility to see us through the winter months and this facility was used, however for the coming winter months this facility will not be used.

The improvement in cash has come from across all areas of Subscriptions, margin on Cafe and Bar Sales, Grants / Sponsorship / Donations, and Fundraising activities like the raffle and fun run - although it was disappointing to see a lack of support of the senior teams for this last activity.

These additional funds have allowed the payment during the year of $2,000 off the balance of the Members Advances, and it is hoped that the remaining balance of $2,000 will be paid once subscriptions for the 2002/2003 season are received.

Our ability to pay our accounts on time has been noted on by several organisations we deal with.

As in past years, the payment by Seniors of their annual Subscriptions is a very time consuming and thankless task, at the end of the financial year two subscriptions remain unpaid, both players have "promised" to pay - however the mechanical process of getting them paid takes time.

I wish to record my thanks to the Executive Committee and to the Club Manager, Dave Biddick, for the interest that they show in the finances of the Club, it doesn't just happen automatically and to have others respond when the need arises is appreciated.

I submit my report and the Statement of Cash Receipts and Payments for the 13 month period ending 30 April 2002 for adoption.

It is with a slight touch of sadness that I write my last report as President of the club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 23 years with the club in the playing and administrative areas and have seen plenty of highs and lows. The club is in very good financial shape at the moment and all goes well for its future prosperity and organization. Having a sound financial base is of utmost importance to any sports club as without money you cannot do anything!!

Before I go on to what's been happening in the club there are a few people I would like to thank for their efforts and support over recent times. Firstly, Dave Biddick as our Club Manager, his tireless efforts over recent seasons have built the club up to the numbers we currently have and also the smooth operation of administrative tasks which form part of his duties as a employee of the club. Dave has spent many extra voluntary hours ensuring things get done. Thanks Dave and I wish you success in your continued role as the Club Manager.

Paul McGirr, our Club Treasurer, is not known to the majority of club members, but his expertise in the financial side of the club has been without peer and his monthly reports have left no doubt where the club is financially during the year. Thank you Paul and may you continue the good work.

Where would we be without Danny Timpson ??. One of the best ground persons in Christchurch. Danny has had a difficult year with the watering of the blocks and this is currently being addressed with the CCC. On behalf of the club and also all the juniors thank you for your efforts and may they continue for a long time in the future.

The junior side of the club has always been one of our strengths and this has continued under the superb guidance of Ross Brown with support from his wife Helen. As normal this load has now got to big for Ross on his own, and he will be requiring further assistance next season. Maybe its time for a small junior committee to be formed to run this part of the club.Thank you Ross and Helen.

My thanks to all the other committee members who have contributed their voluntary time and skills to running the club.

What's Happening ! Since the season has finished, work has been going on in various areas to improve the services to club members. The practice block has been completely scarified, the hump removed and resown. It is intended to complete the No 1 block with the same treatment in Aug/ Sept ready for use for the beginning of the season.

At time of writing we are currently in discussion with a Coach , to be appointed to oversee the coaching direction of the club. We hope to have more news on this prior to the AGM.

Visits have been made to all our major sponsors and potential new ones with Pub Charity requests being of extreme importance for the new season. The concrete practice block is due for replacement and quotes are currently being obtained to replace this with a 3 net set up, further expanding our practice facilities.

Club maintenance is always ongoing, subject to finance, and recently certain areas have been cleaned by commercial cleaners , spouting cleaned out and other areas are currently under review for maintenance upgrade.

Over recent weeks a SWOT analysis of the club has been carried out to identify areas of the club which need improvement and also to set future goals to cover the next 3-5 years. This exercise may or may not be finished before the AGM. Further information on this will be advised as it comes to hand.

A mixes bag of results this year from teams with only the 6 Grade boys , under the guidance of Graeme Turner, winning a grade or should I say sharing the title. A great win for the boys and their turnout at the CCA prize giving in their tux's and bow ties was s sight to behold. Good to see the 5 Grade guys back in the club but I see a few struggling to gain back their form!! The Seniors had a mixed season with their best result being the Semi final of the 1 day competition. A lot of potential here, but as yet not quite coming together. Good luck for next year guys. To all the other teams, I hope you had an enjoyable year and you are looking forward to another season coming up soon.

The women's section of the club is still in the development stages with a lot of the girls still developing their skills and knowledge. Continue the good work and listen to your coaches.

Finally, I would like to thank all the players I have played with over the years especially the President Grade team and who knows, I could turn out for the odd game next season. I wish the incoming committee all the best for the next 12 months and I trust that the new President / Chairperson finds the club being left in a strong financial base with the opportunity to improve in other areas which will come to light in the 3-5 year future review currently under way.

RAY BURGESS PRESIDENT. Senior Report

After having two years off from the game, I was a bit apprehensive and nervous about coming back to play and lead the side. What greeted me was a team of young and relatively inexperienced cricketers with little formal training but keen and willing to learn. Throughout the season I tried to introduce good work ethics and behaviours needed at the top level to succeed. I think some of those ethics came through and I hope the team was better off for it.

The start of the season did not start well as all club members and the rest of Christchurch know. To get bowled out for 23 in an innings will probably be one of my lowest points as a cricketer, this also would be true for the rest of the team and the club in general. As a when things like that go on you try to talk to each player before and after they go out to give them some advice/encouragement. Unfortunately I said very few words - this was basically because I couldn't keep up with all the traffic to and from the crease in such a short time frame.

After this day we were written off as cellar-dwellers and not given much hope. I knew and the team knew where capable of much more. I wont go through any games as such as anyone can read the book or see the averages, what I want to achieve in this report is what happened between the lines and the future of the side.

Over the season many players under performed as an individual but over performed as a team member/player. If you look at the stats, no one apart from Graeme White had a good/great year. The team made the semi finals of the one-dayers only to be out classed by a more experienced St Albans side. This game was a good learning curve for all and our time will come where a game like that will be of benefit to us.

We also finished mid table of the longer version of the game which was not too bad given the start we had. Given a stronger finish we may have been in the top four of this competition as well.

Highlights of the season, in the trophy beating East Shirley was a great day for the club especially after the hiding they gave us in the cup. Also no one will forget Matty Barlow's catch. All the wins in the cup matches especially beating an over confident St Albans. Making the cup semis for the first time for four years. Other highlights, basically every time the lads took me out on the town.

What we still need to leam? More patience when playing, partnerships when batting or bowling are crucial and we need to do more in this area to succeed in the future. Also to enjoy the art of the game more, occasionally the opposition will play well and you will be taken to the sword or a bowler will put in a great spell or bowl ajaffa. Respect that ability and do not get too down about it but enjoy the game no matter what happens, remember every dog has his day. As a team we also need to help second grade perform better and be more encouraging towards players to come up and play seniors. They are a vital part of the club and we will not be able to succeed without them wanting to come up and to help them perform as well once they get there. In general we performed well as a team and not great as individuals, that is good generally but in cricket it is an individuals game with a team environment. We need more good individual performances next season if we are to succeed, basically we all need to stand up and be accountable for our own efforts.

In saying that the performers of the season were: Graeme White, always constant with the ball and more than handy with the bat, Campbell Ogilvie, under achieved over all but put in a good performance when it was required with bat and ball. Mark Cosier, just thought he would like a mention, he did bugger all, James Biddick, improved through out the season, Johnny Rea, tidy with gloves, could score a few more runs as he has the ability to be a class player. Ashley Taggart, always untidy off the field, Scott Inglis, well he is old and now married so he is probably all washed up like myself.

In summary the season was - Poor start, poor finish but a lot of fun and a few wins in between.

Season Record 7th BWCUCC Annual 2nand Grade Report

Unfortunately for the 2 grade team this year we did not get the results we desired at the start of the season, but nevertheless I feel we have improved from last year and continued to enlarge our base of players. There have been many worthwhile contributions from many players this season but there have also been too many disappointing results. The standout player for the team this year was Stephen Dellabarca-Smith. He achieved in almost every game and was our leading strike bowler with over 40 wickets. He also achieved more than admirably with the bat scoring over 350 mns. At times he was devastating with the ball and punishing with the bat, he thoroughly deserved the reward of getting player of the year as well as many other prizes from the club. Matt Barlow showed continued improvement with the bat and we all know now he is capable of getting that big score when he scored a wonderful 92 Vs St. Albans. Andrew Ellis was a new player to our team this season and was instantly a success, he scored 240 runs in the second half of the season and next year with a full season available to him we can expect much more. Unquestionably the highlight of the year for the team was the two high scoring affairs Vs St. Albans at Hagley 6. In the one-dayer which we unfortunately lost we were set a mammoth 373 in 50 overs. We fared well reaching 332 in 46 before being bowled out, even though we lost it was extremely enjoyable for both sides and was played in great spirit by both teams, especially by our players after we looked down and out when they had reached our mammoth total. I think that was the turning point for us in the season, it was a shame it had to come too late. We then finished strongly in the two dayers, beating Marist and gaining a winning draw against St. Albans in the other high scoring game at Hagley 6. We ended up 6th in the one dayers and a disappointing 7 in the two dayers.

With continued improvement we should fare better next season, but will need continued support from the club and growth in our players if we are to achieve our true results we are capable of. Hopefully this season will be a turning point for our team and we will gain the respect from other teams we know we deserve and hopefully move higher on the ladder in the point's tables. I know everyone in the team and club next year is expecting bigger and better things, and hopefully we can deliver.

Geoffrey Keast BWCUCC 3rd Grade

This season was another enjoyable one for the members of the Burnside 3rd Grade Team. This year the team welcomed the addition of Richard Clare and Grant Summers, while also losing the services of Paul Fitzgerald and stalwart Kane Erickson. The season did not commence the way we would have wished, with a first round loss to LPW, and the consistent rain meant that we had to wait six weeks to put any points on the board. Early on our bowlers seemed to lack an ability to dominate the opposition, whilst batting performances were too often individually held together, with partnerships few and far between. However, the team showed the character which has accumulated amongst the players and came back to create good wins over Riccarton and HSOB Cavaliers. The disappointment of the season was the team's failure to perform against the HSOB Wanderers who were again the much better side on the day. After more significant interference due to rain, the team performed outstandingly well after Christmas, with highlights being the 291 posted at Garrick Park and an innings win over St Albans. By winning four 2 dayers outright after Christmas, the team ensured a top four placing, and had a really productive and enjoyable end to the season. Individual mentions in the batting ranks must include Player of the year lan McAlavey, who was very consistent, striking an aggressive 93 against LPW and some vital half centuries towards the end of the season. In the bowling stakes, Geoff Boorer's 22 wickets from 12 performances was the most useful individual contribution, especially before Christmas when a failure to take early wickets meant that our medium pacers had to step up. Similarly, Richie Clare contributed significantly with the ball, including an outstanding 7-13 against St Albans. In addition to this, the onfield presence of the Johnson brothers, the inspirational fielding of Dean Harrison and Grant Summers, and the part time contributions of Paul Fitzgerald, Michael Robbins and Lee Gaskell all combined to make this team competitive once again in the 3 Grade competition. The team extends its gratitude to the club for the provision of the Number Two pitch at the Home of Cricket, and also to those teams who hosted us during what was another interrupted, but pleasing season. Best of luck to the inaugural BWCUCC 3 Grade emissaries to this summers Boxing Day test in Melbourne. McAlavey, your request to ride up front with the pilots has been declined and you are to sit in the very back of the tail and refrain from scaring the air hostesses.

Tim Saunders 5th Grade

First things first, I would like to thank our sponsor "The Rose and Thistle" for assisting in ensuring the financial hurdle of subs and outfits were taken away when putting the team together. Without that assistance I am sure we would have struggled even more than we did to get a team on the park. It was our 1 season back together for a number of years and we suffered through all the normal hassles associated with social cricket. In order to make things easier on the organisers of afternoon cricket I recommend the CCA implement the following I/ Reduce afternoon cricket to 9 a side - 9 seems to be the magic number in terms of player availability week in week out. 2, Provide big screen TV'S at all suburban parks so other major sporting events can be viewed as we play - If this was done maybe we could relax on point #1 3, Have trained physiotherapists and masseuses available to help us cope with the outbreaks of fitness amongst all our injuries 4, Change the rules so that the object of the game is to get a little white ball into a hole and change the name of the game to something like "Golf.

In amongst all the hassles we did manage to play some cricket. There were some good and not so good performances as you would expect. Some personal highlights would be as follows. • Sticky Barrett terrorising opposition batsmen with the 2-piece ball. • Mike Hastings determination to attack from the 1st ball throughout the season in the face of mounting failure • Dave Faz getting his eyes fixed so he could at least see what he was supposed to be bowling at. • Constant stump abuse. Our stumps were at various times of the season running 30mins late, in Akaroa, Stumpy's garage and various other places on game day • Stumpy keeping up his long term commitment to gathering facial scars

This season was a mostly enjoyable one, with the year's emphasis on having fun and enjoying ourselves. We started off in 5 grade and got taught a couple of lessons by some slightly older, better drilled teams. After two or three ample losses we shifted to 6 grade where we were more successful. After this transition once the team got a few more runs,a few more wickets and most importantly some wins under our belt. We gained a lot more confidence and gelled better as a team.

Notable batting performances by the team included finally breaking the 100 run milestone. From here we went from strength to strength with outstanding individual performances including; a majestic 63 from Mark 'The Shark' Brooker, a beautifully carved 99 n.o. from Mark Hording, and 2 outstanding centuries from Jordan Buchanan.

The bowling side of our game also picked up after Christmas with us bowling teams out on a )f regular basis. Impressive bowling performances came from Chris Kinraid, Jordan Buchanan, and Phillip Jellyman all achieving over 15 wickets, with both Phillip and Jordan obtaining five wicket bags. Special mention must also go to Brendon The Don' Hay for his unfailing commitment to the team and superb fielding performances during the year. The team would like to thank the club for the provision of excellent facilities and a very enjoyable season.

Burnside West Cricket Club BURNSIDE SIXTH GRADE TEAM REPORT 2001/2

To say this season was successful would be an understatement as the boys achieved there first ever sixth grade championship. After eight seasons of being an also ran the team climbed their Everest and turned up at the CCA prizegiving dressed in tuxedos and dropped off in limousines to receive their trophy. A memorable night was had by all, both al the prizegiving and at the aftermatch back at the Clocktower.

The team this year played 16 games for 12 wins and 4 losses, we saw two players reach their 100 games in Squid and Loads, the return of a foundation member in Sticky and in all managed to use 28 players over the season. As in previous years team stats are trashed as then every one starts with a clean slate for the following season with no baggage. However we will write a short note on a few of our stars of the season:

Sticky: Teams player of the year, with his arrival 5 games into the year the team had already had 3 losses, he motivated the team to slag each of more and not worry about the opposition while getting a few runs and wickets for himself. Crash: Hopefully without the pressure of getting married during the cricket he will return to his all time best next season, mind you we have been saying that for a couple of seasons now. Vegie: Our leading wicket taker - even though he tells every one he's a batsman. Perhaps next season he should tell every one he's a bowler so he scores a few runs. Whitsy: Got half his runs in one knock this season with a match winning 98. Showed he was only consistent at one thing and that was turning up to the pub and drinking plenty. Loads: One of only two to play every game this season, it shows now though as the doctor has told him to give up drinking, Ihe price you pay for being a champion. Wheels: Bases his game around the Sri Lankan off spinners, the only problem is you get more air out of his arse than when he bowls. Rosovo: The youngest in the side and most injury prone, say's alot about experience. We still couldn't do without him as who would get our drinks for us. Squid: Got a hundred in liis hunclrcdth game, just as well lie did something tliis year as we wouldn't be able to say anything about his season. Trcvscy: liqual ICtiding wicket taker, tie nearly took as many wickets as runs. Pcrhtips lie should look at his did so he can aclually run between the wickets. Bruce: Talks a great game, now needs to work out the bat is Ibr scoring runs and the ball is not a hand grenade tlial keeps exploding of the bat. Turns: What can I say about myself other than it was a privilege to lift the trophy at the awards or I could say the team is lucky to have such a great captain who carries the side but they've heard that before

To all those other players that played for us, thanks a million and to all other members in the club we hope you winter well and look after yourselves. BWU Dirty-Dirties

7th Grade Competition

After lifting the CCA 7 grade trophy last season the BWU Dirty Dirties IstXI this season had to adjust to being the hunted and not the hunter, it's fair to say we stmggled somewhat.

During the off season we had lost a number of players to lucrative off shore contracts which saw us struggling for numbers early on. This unfortunately saw us play the majority of the season without the full compliment of eleven players.

Despite these setbacks we battled through to the Christmas break and managed to hang in there for third place at the midpoint. The majority of the games played up to that date were battled for extremely hard. It's a credit to the 6 or 7 regulars who chased a lot more balls around the park than what would have been required had we regularly had 11 players that we managed to hold our own for the first part of the season.

Post Christmas we managed to field 11 players more regularly and this saw some more promising results that kept us in the running. Unfortunately the onslaught of the Super 12 and Cmsader home games saw us again stmggle for numbers. The later part of the season saw some good wins but at the end of the day we came up one game short and had to settle for 3rd place.

Again I would like to pay credit to the 6 or 7 who put in the effort for the majority of the games. For what seems like forever Andreas Carrara fronted up with the bat again with the highest aggregate and several 50's. Simon Spackman's 7 for 21 including a hatrick in the opening game deserves special mention as to does Eden Chapman's performance as fines master mid season, unfortunately though for the wrong reasons, enough said. Again, Tim Elstob's recitements of his apres cricket activities kept us entertained and hanging on every word.

Unfortunately the season just finished was probably the last the Dirty Dirties will compete for a few years as many members leave on overseas travel or pursue new career opportunities. On that note I would like to thank our main sponsor, the Caledonian Tavern and also to the BWCUCC for tolerating us over the years. Rest assured though this is not the last of the Dirty Dirties and we will return older and wiser in the future. Seventh Grade Maroon - Pie Chuckers 1st XI

,nd a season it was for the Pie Chuckers. We finished the season 2 equal, a improvement from last year's bottom half of the table standing and if a couple of had gone our way the title would of been ours. The loss of a few experienced rs such as the big hitting Scott Kelman and John-boy Horton was counted by up some young blood in the bowling department. team'was built around two outstanding individual performances. Bevan Griffiths was outstanding with the ball taking 33 wickets in a rain shorten season and Duncan Broadfoot the winner of the Al Brown Trophy, who amassed 459 runs (including 139, the score for BWU this season). Despite these two significant contributions, this season was a true team effort. A number of players shook their desired all rounder tag and concentrated on their specialist role within the team. Every week from 1 through to 11 each player did their job, which made captaincy a simple job (may be not for Cameron Pickering). As always for any seventh grade team the fun on the field was matched if not exceeded by the great times had after the game.

The eleven most memorable moments of the Pie Chuckers 2001/02 season:

• The first ever hundred for the Pie Chuckers by Hamish Rendall 116* (Marist Green) • Two five wicket hauls from Scott Hoskins 5-26 and Matt Mace 5-22 • Dave Yardley's match winning 42 against LPW • Scoring 346 against Sydenham with hundreds to Broadfoot 139 and Pickering 102 • Our keeper's attempt at bowling, getting humped for 42 off 4 overs. • Bowling the Marist Mongies out for 19 mns with only 9 players. • Willie Lapthorne's dirty slapping in a quick fire 30 at a cmcial stage of the game against our archrival St. Albans. • Scott Kilday's freak fielding all season including a ripper catch at first (LPW) and a taking an ridiculous caught and bowled (Marist) • Tim Calder's remarkable 98 with the orange bat that has less power than an old GM Score Master. This bat is used each game by the lowest run scorer the previous week. The next highest score in the last two seasons with the bat is 11. • Brett Drewitt's highest ever score in cricket of 14* • Hoskins pathetic mn out attempt missing the stumps from less than a foot away with the batsman half way down the pitch. He threw the ball so hard it went for four over throws.

I would like to thank all the members and helpers of the Bumside Cricket Club for another great season and we look forward to many more to come. Burnside Presidents Men 2001 - 2002

The 2001 - 2002 season was not as successful as we would have liked. We finished middle of the bottom section. We lost both Stephen Jeffery and Chris Kennedy to the fifth grade team. This increased the average age of the team somewhat. It was therefore great to have Shane Young come along and become a permanent member of the team. Dennis Pyatt's body again let him down early in the season snapping his achilles tendon on the way to making a hundred. He promises to be back next season. Eric White had another good season with the ball taking 34 wickets at 18.3. Eric just keeps adding wickets to his overall tally. Bryce McKenzie had a good season with the bat averaging 33.7 and having a highest score of 92. Bryce also bowled a lot more this season taking 10 wickets at an average of 19.2. When you look at the stats it is easy to see the reason, both with bat and ball, why we would like Grant Dickson to play more games. This season (so he says) is the last for Ray Burgess. Ray will be sadly missed for his bowling and lower order batting but also for being such a great team member. Good luck with the bowls. Robbie Chisholm was as usual always available to help me both on the field and off. Even though he will tell you that his batting was not as good this year he still averaged 23. I am sure that a was on the way when Shane gave him out LBW off his nose. Hopefully the nose will be better before next season. Bobby Shorter again threatened to come back as a spinner. He bowled the most overs 158 and picked up 23 wickets. He also batted well with a very quick fire 43 and an average of 14.2. Peter Hewson was consistent throughout the season with both his batting and bowling. Johnny Gilson continues to be one of our most solid performers. Dave Knibb, Paul O'Grady and Murray Jones all performed with distinction during the games they played. We welcomed Bill Grogan and Andrew Macbeth to the team this year and they showed that they will be important members in the future.

This season we played one away game. A small contingent made the trip to Btenehim only to be rained out. We ended up playing indoor cricket. The social side of the weekend was great but the cricket was disappointing. We were almost home before we found a golf course to play golf on because of the rain. Thanks to Shane for organising this weekend, although I think Kathy did most of the work. A big thank you must go to Bryce and Sue for allowing us to use their home for our end of season fancy dress party. It was very successful and enjoyed by all.

As usual the Presidents Men were regular users of the clubroom after games. A pity some of the other social teams don't follow suit.

Thank you to all the players and their families for another great season.

Registrations may have been down slightly on the previous season (a National trend, apparently) but 2001 - 02 still proved very successful.

Fewer children participated in the Have-a-go program this season but the scheme is still brilliantly conceived and an ideal introduction to the game for beginners. Special thanks need to go to Jane Thomson for coordinating the program and to the coaches who religiously studied their manuals each week for the Friday night sessions.

Six Kiwi and seven Junior Average teams were joined by three Upper Riccarton sides to create two eight team round-robiri competitions. Once again we appreciate the efforts of coaches, the parents who assisted with the barbecue and the teams from Upper Riccarton for their support.

Bumside contributed 12 teams to Saturday morning competitions, with an extra team experiencing the successful modified cricket. Team eight coached by Stu Harding completed an unbeaten season in the Junior Traditional one day grade. The Club was well represented, once again, at zone tournaments and we congratulate Fred Burke, Brendon McFarlane, Chris Gagliardi, Shaun Coffey, Hayden West and Nic McFarlane (Team 1) and Matthew Robinson (Team 3) for their selection in various representative teams.

The success of Junior Cricket relies heavily on parental or adult contribution. This season our Saturday morning coaches have proven to be a most enthusiastic and resourceful group with these qualities being effectively passed on to the players in their charge. Special thanks to Grant Penlington (Team 1), Mark and Nick Toplis (Team 2) and Richard McBrearty (Team 9) who despite not having any family members in their teams contributed their valuable time as coaches. The club is also indebted to Richard and Action Indoor Sports for their generous sponsorship and to Andrew Reid for his expertise in providing coaching on a roster basis for all grades from Kiwi to Under 16.

In conclusion Junior Cricket at Bumside would not be possible without the contribution from grounds man Danny Timpson and Club Manager Dave Biddick.

2002 - 2003 promises to be yet another progression on what has gone before so we look forward with eager anticipation to October and another new season.

Women's 3rd Grade

A very satisfactory year for the women's 3rd grade team. We were placed 2nd in the grade with some good wins being achieved throughout the season. Wendy Fuller, Frances MacKay, Abbie Winder and Helen Coughlan all made Canterbury under 14 girls rep teams. Although we had 16 players we did seem to alternate through the season from having 14-15 player or only 8-9 players on the day. Throughout the year an improvement in skills and performance was evident in all the players. A number of the girls had little experience and it was especially pleasing to see the improvement in these players. The girls all seemed to get on very well and a good team spirit built over the season. Coaching them was made easier by the strong parental support that I received and I thank everyone for this support. I was assisted by Brian Coughlan, in fact he was probably more influential in the success of the season than anyone else. Brian put in a lot of time and I thank him for his help. The challenge for the club is to retain the core of the girls who played last year and to attract enough younger players to start a fourth grade girls team next year. I hope that the girls who played this season enjoyed the year and hopefully they will return to the club for the 2002/03 season.
