BOOK EARLY. 2 | NEFR 2017 Dear Fans, Thanks for coming out to the 2017 New England Forest Rally. We are so excited to bring you the 27th running of this great stage rally. This year brings lots of change organizationally. This is my first year as the new chairman of NEFR and we have a new sanctioning body, the American Rally Association. I want to thank the past chairman, Tim O’Neil and the entire ARA organization for all the support they have provided us during the transition. As part of the ARA National Championship Series, we will have some of the world’s top teams competing right here in New England alongside teams from right in our own backyard. Putting NEFR on each year is a huge undertaking and I want to thank our landowners (Seven Islands Land Co, Wagner Forest Management, the towns of Peru & Woodstock, and the Maine Department of Conservation), local businesses, Chris Regan sponsors, and especially the volunteers who make the rally possible. Without all of you, none of this could happen. Thanks also to our host venues, Sunday River Resort and JML Trucking. And, of course, to all the competitors, crews, families, and fans for helping make the New England Forest Rally one of the best races in the US. The two goals of NEFR are to put on a great rally and to help grow the sport as a whole. Want to help? Be respectful of our landowners, patronize our sponsors and local businesses and mention NEFR wherever you stop. Be smart, be safe, share us on social media, and most of all – have fun! Pastrana and Subaru teammate Brandon Semenuk now sit first and third in the season standings with three rounds of the nine-event calendar complete. “Great weekend here in Washington!” said Pastrana after the event. “We came in looking for a podium to keep us in good position in the standings and ended up coming away with a win—sometimes it’s about being in the right place at the right time. These roads are amazing and Brandon was really on it, great to have Ken Block back in the fight too. Rhi and I were happy to get the points and take a solid lead in the championship with six rounds to go!” A favorite of drivers and fans alike, Olympus Rally is notorious for rain, fast-changing road conditions, and some of the most scenic and challenging stages on the American calendar. With defending champion Barry McKenna and his Ford Fiesta WRC unfortunately sidelined due to a family issue, the fight for Open Class honors was between the two blue and gold Subaru Motorsports USA entries of Pastrana and Semenuk and the newly debuted #43 Hoonigan Racing Division WRX STI of Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino.

At the ninth round in Lohéac, the reigning World Champion finished third – the first podium result since his victory in Hockenheim last May. In front of 75,000 spectators, the Swede was only beaten in the final by his countryman Johan Kristoffersson and the French local matador Sébastien Loeb. In the overall standings, Ekström is third behind Kristoffersson and his team mate Petter Solberg – also like EKS in the team classification. Following heavy rain, the final race in Brittany became a mud festival featuring many overtaking moves. “Saturday sun and Sunday rather more swimming and sliding, a varied weekend,” confirmed Ekström. “I’m actually quite satisfied with my third place, but I’m a little annoyed because we weren’t so far from the front. In the dry and in the rain we were just missing a tiny bit, but we can certainly build on the performance.” In Lohéac, Ekström’s team mates Reinis Nitišs and Toomas Heikkinen once again made the semi- final races for the twelve fastest drivers, but drew the short straw at this stage. “After contact with Andreas Bakkerud my wipers stopped working, from there on I was running blind,” summarized Nitišs and added: “I’m disappointed with the result because it doesn’t show our real performance.” Heikkinen missed the final after a collision with Ken Block.

Eight male elite BMX riders volunteered for the study. Each rider performed three, 10 second maximal sprints on an Olympic standard indoor BMX track. The riders’ bicycles were fitted with a portable SRM power meter. Each rider performed the three sprints using gear ratios of 41/16, 43/16, 45/16 tooth. The results from the 41/16 and 45/16 gear ratios were compared to the current standard 43/16 gear ratio. Statistically significant differences were found between the gear ratios for peak power (F(2,14) = 6.448; p = 0.010) and peak torque (F(2,14) = 4.777; p = 0.026), but no significant difference was found for time to peak power (F (2,14) = 0.200; p = 0.821).

The theoretical framework of this paper is based on the concepts which position motorsport in a context of sustainability at both global and team levels within the borders of systems theory. Training and racing activities of the MXStar team based in Uppsala (Sweden) are described in the paper from the environmental perspective. Changing of the team’s technical performance as well as their behavioural models has certain driving and restraining forces that are analyzed in particular in the discussion part of the paper. Recommendations for the MXStar team have been developed in accordance with the results of detailed analysis of the team’s environmental impact. The authors concluded that environmental performance of motocross racing composes from technical and behavioural inputs of each participating team. In order to optimize the environmental impact of the motocross each team member has to be innovative in both perspectives. Keywords: environmental

Sandell, with co-driver Per Almkvist, traded stage victories all weekend with Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew. The dueling crews, each at the wheel of 2018 Subaru WRX STI rally cars, contended with extremely dusty conditions which slowed Higgins just enough on Sunday for Sandell to hold on for the victory. With a second-place overall finish in Idaho, Higgins and Drew mathematically secured the 2018 American Rally Association (ARA) Championship with one rally still to run. The Idaho Rally International was a new addition to the national ARA calendar this year, after running as a regional- level event for several years. As a result, most national-level teams - including the Subaru entries of Higgins and Sandell - arrived with no previous course knowledge or stage notes, making for a level playing field. The roads in and around Idaho City proved to be some of the narrowest and most technical rally stages ever run in the ARA championship, providing a big challenge for the drivers. Hanging dust was also a major factor throughout the event.

The 143 mile stage rally event held in Maniwaki, Quebec, hosted over 40 international competitors on snow-covered gravel roads in a grueling single-day race format. Subaru Rally Team Canada driver Antoine L’Estage, a seven-time winner of Rallye Perce-Neige, built an early lead over the first three stages of the rally, until mechanical issues hindered his pace. Higgins and Pastrana, who closely trailed L’Estage during the first loop of stages, battled for the lead throughout the remainder of the rally. Higgins would go on to win the event over teammate Pastrana putting the #75 Subaru WRX STI rally car on top of the podium. “A great result, it feels good to win in such harsh conditions against some top guys, and this was the first ever ARA event, so I’m glad we were able to get our names in the history books,” explained David Higgins at the podium celebration. “The last loop of stages was hard work, the snow was coming down pretty hard on one stage, there was a big snow ball inside the corner, we clipped it and smashed one of the lights, making the night stage even tougher.
