Sir David and Lady Clary Chemistry Fund Sir David and Lady Clary Chemistry Fund Chemistry at Magdalen and the University of Oxford Chemistry has a long history at the University of Oxford. The Department of Chemistry is the largest chemistry department in the UK and one of the largest in the western world. Oxford chemists have won at least nine Nobel prizes including Magdalen Fellow Sir Robert Robinson (Chemistry, 1947, for investigations of plant products), Frederic Soddy (Physics, 1921, for his discovery of isotopes), and Dorothy Hodgkin (Chemistry, 1964, for the x-ray structure of penicillin). One of the earliest notable Magdalen chemists was Charles Daubeny (1795–1867). After studying at Magdalen under John Kidd, Daubeny simultaneously held Chairs in Chemistry, Botany, and Geology. However, interest in the sciences can be traced back to the Magdalen’s founder, William of Waynflete, and it was in his honour that the highly distinguished Waynflete Professorships (in Metaphysical Philosophy, Chemistry, Physiology and Pure Mathematics) were established in 1857. The Waynflete Professor of Chemistry has been the University’s most distinguished Chair in Organic Chemistry ever since, and holders have included Professors Sir Benjamin Brodie, William Odling, William Henry Perkin, Sir Robert Robinson (Nobel Laureate, 1947), Sir Jack Baldwin and the current incumbent, Stephen G Davies. The present day Of the 28 Colleges offering Chemistry, Magdalen is one of only five fortunate enough to have a full complement of three Tutorial Fellows in Chemistry: Professors Tim Donohoe (Organic), Andrew Weller (In- organic) and Stuart Mackenzie (Physical and Theoretical Chemistry). Each of these also runs an internation- ally–leading research group in the Department of Chemistry. -

SANTA CRUZ: CENTER FOR STOCK ASSESSMENT RESEARCH, DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS, JACK BASKIN SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING 20 December 2006 Memorandum to the Record Report of Sabbatical Activities of Marc Mangel, Fall 2006 I was Frohlich Fellow at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, Hobart, Tasmania for the period 28 September to 3 November. When arranging this visit, we agreed that CSIRO would fund travel and rental assistance only and that I would cover the cost of rental car and subsistence from my research grants that support work relevant to Antarctic krill and disease. Activities at CSIRO My main research activities at CSIRO were a collaboration with Natalie Dowling and Chris Wilcox on models of fleet dynamics in the eastern tuna/billfish fishery and with Chris Wilcox on optimal control of invasive species. Both of these projects involve novel and important applications of the method of stochastic dynamic programming; I can state without hesitation that had I not come for this month, the work could not have been done. Dowling, Wilcox and I have formulated and developed the first version of code to allow one to predict how long-line vessels will respond to spatial management of effort (through decrements in hook allocations that vary according to fishing location). We are thus able to predict the spatial distribution of fishing effort, the landed catch as a function of week, and the price of the target species. I believe that this work has great potential for expansion, and would be easily modified to model quota rather than effort based fisheries. We are currently working on a paper for the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. -

Bartlett Ab Initio Density Functional Theory Rodney J Barlett, Stanislav Ivanov, So Hirata, Ireneusz Grabowski, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611-8435, USA There is a fundamental dilemma in current density functional theory (DFT) methods, in that there is no way to converge to the right answer. This is contrary to the well-known paradigm of correlated ab initio methods. In this respect, DFT is a ‘semi-empirical’ theory and does not have systematic ways for improvement. We propose ab initio DFT to help resolve this problem. Taking functional derivatives with respect to density of exchange and correlation energy expressions, we introduce local, multiplicative one-particle operators that account for these terms. We have developed an exact exchange theory for molecules and are developing correlation potentials that can be tied to MBPT(2), MBPT(3), or even coupled-cluster theory. David Buckingham (1930-2021)
David Buckingham (1930-2021) The distinguished Theoretical Chemist David Buckingham died on February 4, 2021 at the age of 91. He was born in Sydney, Australia on January 28, 1930. His father and mother were both born in England and emigrated to Australia in the early 1900s. He studied Chemistry at the University of Sydney where he published as many as eight papers on molecular properties before starting his PhD. He moved to the University of Cambridge in 1953 and was the first research student of John Pople. During this period he published several papers on the theory of intermolecular forces, the statistical mechanics of gases and the Kerr effect. After finishing his PhD in just two years he was appointed to a Lectureship at Christ Church Oxford in 1955. He was subsequently promoted to a Lectureship in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a Tutorship and Studentship at Christ Church. In this period he started an experimental programme that lead to the first measurement of a molecular quadrupole moment using a field-gradient induced birefringence method. He also studied theoretically and experimentally a variety of problems related to molecular properties including Cotton-Mouton and Rayleigh scattering effects. In addition, he published several papers on solvent effects on vibrational spectroscopy and on various topics in NMR. In 1965 Buckingham was appointed to the new Chair of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bristol. Here he built up a very active group working experimentally and theoretically on a range of topics including molecules aligned in liquid-crystals, molecular properties such as hyperpolarizabilities and magnetic susceptibilities, magnetic optical activity, light scattering of molecules and NMR effects. -

In the wake of the worst global recession in 60 years, we know that both industry and research institutions face very tough challenges, so it is vital that we make a strong case for continued investment in the chemical sciences to generate a sustained economic recovery. Provision of chemical sciences courses in UK universities is also likely to change over the next few years, as the impact of increased fees and tight funding for infrastructure begins to take effect. Our UK university colleagues need all the support we can give. With such serious issues in mind, we staged special parliamentary debates on science in the lead up to the UK General Election. After the election, our annual Parliamentary Links event, held at Westminster on behalf of the scientific community, featured some of the most important political figures in UK science. It’s very gratifying to hear the testimony from Andrew Miller MP in this review that the RSC’s timely and informative activities, including our events and responses to select committee consultations, are perceived to be immensely valuable in Westminster.
