Name: Kohlten Barthelme County: Jasper Project Area: Cats Crystal (white female cat) & Orange Chicken (orange male tabby cat) Cat Show 1. What are three things you learned or insights you gained this year from doing this project? I learned that longer haired cats shed more hair. I learned that you need to trim their nails every few months. Finally, the last thing I learned was that cats show their feelings when they purr. 2. What would you like to describe or share about your exhibit that we can’t see easily in your uploaded photos or documentation? I brushed the cats every weekend and trimmed their nails every 2 months. I made sure they had a rabies vaccine every year at the vet. I made sure they had an FVRCP vaccine every year to protect against disease. I checked their ears for ear mites every month at the same time I gave them Frontline Plus for prevention of fleas and ticks. I also checked their teeth for any tartar buildup. I cleaned around their eyes with a cotton ball and warm water. I wormed them with Pyrantel every month and gave Drontal if I saw any worms in their stool. I made sure their litter box was cleaned daily, they had fresh water daily and were fed twice a day. Both cats are kept inside at night and occasionally let outside to play during the day. The cats also get playtime daily with toys such as strings and balls. I also hold and pet my cats daily. Both of my cats have different personalities. Crystal is the white cat, 6 years old, 10 pounds, and a domestic short. She likes to lay around inside of the house. She likes short bouts of attention but does not particularly like to cuddle or sit close. Orange Chicken is the orange tabby cat, 2 years old, 8 pounds and loves to be held, sit on my lap and cuddle. He loves attention. Both cats are very tolerant of other cats and dogs. Both cats like humans and do not seem to mind strangers. Crystal has been spayed and Orange Chicken has been neutered. If they do not come inside by evening, there is a pet door in the garage for them to come into the garage for safety. 3. What steps did you take to complete this exhibition? I already had the cats at home. I kept the cats fed with Purina Complete Cat chow, ½ cup day and night, and some wet food called Rachel Ray’s shredded chicken and they were watered daily. I brushed them as described above as well as kept their vaccines up to date. I played with them. I let them outside if they want. Then at night time, I let them in to feed, water and put them to bed in the laundry room to keep them safe. I kept their litter boxes cleaned. I made sure to get them flea and tick prevention medicine monthly as well as worming them routinely. Before the video, I brushed them out some more, cleaned their ears and eyes, checked their skin and petted them. 4. If you did this project again, what would you change or do differently? What I would change is probably take a different cat. I would probably brush them more frequently and cut their nails more frequently. 5. How will you apply what you have learned to your life? I would apply this to my life by telling my kids in the future this so they know how to care for a cat and take cats to the fair. I believe it has taught me responsibility in caring for a living thing. .
