Although originally from Texas, she has lived in California for the last 15 years. Currently she is the Dean of Sciences and Math at a small college in northern California. She is married to Jeff Roberts, also an All Breeds judge in TICA. The name of their cattery “PuraVida” reflects their love for paradise in Costa Rica. Heather breeds Singapuras and European Burmese and finds the incredible intelligence of the Singapura and the laidback personality of the European Burmese to be a nice balance in her life. Their breeding program focuses on healthy cats with loving temperaments foremost. She has also shown Bengal, Cymric, Siberian, Maine Coon, Somali, Bombay, and companion cats. She has had the extreme pleasure of judging in Australia and New Zealand several times over recent years. She enjoys the countryside, the new friendships, and of course the fabulous quality of the cats. She has imported cats from Australia and New Zealand for use in her own breeding program, and has exported cats back to Australia in an effort to truly internationalize some gene pools. She hopes to someday import a lovely Burmilla for her and Jeff to enjoy and promote in TICA. -
Tyrosinase Mutations Associated with Siamese and Burmese Patterns in the Domestic Cat (Felis Catus)

Grahn Department of Population Health and Reproduction, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, Davis, CA, USA Summary The Siamese cat has a highly recognized coat colour phenotype that expresses pigment at the extremities of the body, such as the ears, tail and paws. This temperature-sensitive colouration causes a ÔmaskÕ on the face and the phenotype is commonly referred to as ÔpointedÕ. Burmese is an allelic variant that is less temperature-sensitive, producing more pigment throughout the torso than Siamese. Tyrosinase (TYR) mutations have been sus- pected to cause these phenotypes because mutations in TYR are associated with similar phenotypes in other species. Linkage and synteny mapping in the cat has indirectly sup- ported TYR as the causative gene for these feline phenotypes. TYR mutations associated with Siamese and Burmese phenotypes are described herein. Over 200 cats were analysed, representing 12 breeds as well as randomly bred cats. The SNP associated with the Siamese phenotype is an exon 2 G > A transition changing glycine to arginine (G302R). The SNP associated with the Burmese phenotype is an exon 1 G > T transversion changing glycine to tryptophan (G227W). The G302R mutation segregated concordantly within a pedigree of Himalayan (pointed) Persians. All cats that had ÔpointedÕ or the Burmese coat colour phenotype were homozygous for the corresponding mutations, respectively, suggesting that these phenotypes are a result of the identified mutations or unidentified mutations that are in linkage disequilibrium. -

PERSIAN LONGHAIR BREED ADVISORY COMMITTEE Breeding Policy SUPREME UK OG & IMP GR CH GEMKIN STARWIND OVERALL SUPREME EXHIBIT 2012 & 2013 CONTENTS Introduction Origins of the Breed Pattern Groups Genetic Make-up Breeding System Inbreeding Genetic Defects Grooming Introduction With the formation of a consolidated BAC for Persian Longhairs, the requirement to pro- duce a breeding policy has given the BAC the opportunity to review the Registration Poli- cies and Standards of Points for Persians. Some of the policies for the individual pattern groups have not been reviewed or revised for some years. During this time, the Fancy has altered considerably, with the number of Persians being shown dropping dramati- cally, with a consequent reduction in breeders and breeding cats but also, on the plus side, the ability to show longhairs from Exotic or Exotic/Persian breeding at championship level in the section. The aim of this breeding policy is to give advice and guidance to breeders to enable them to observe what is considered “best practice” in breeding Persian Longhairs. The aims of these amendments are to: open up the gene-pool enable breeders to outcross make it easier for breeders to import outcross bloodlines The over-riding factor should always be to maintain health, and preserve the unique qualities of this stunning breed, coat colour, length and texture, beautiful large, round eyes and sweet facial expression, which makes them sought after both for showing and as wonderful family pets. Origins of the Breed The breed’s name refers to Persia, the former name of Iran, where similar cats are found. -

SEARLE Deparlmetzt of Zoology, University o,f Malaya, Singapore* (Received 3iay 30ltz, 1957) ~[NTIRODUGTION The domestic cat can, for several reasons, be regarded as very suitable material for work on population genetics. It is polymorphic for coat colour, pattern, and various other :characters; moreover the genetics of this variation is fairly well understood. It is common in large cities throughout the world, where it is usually divided into two social groups with little mrtual intercourse. Show-cats comprise the smaller group; 'the}' are ,carefully bred and selected by, fancier's for exhibition purposes and are therefore much subject to human interference. The other larger and more heterogeneous group can .be called "alley-cats", including ordinary house-cats and feral or gear-feral "strays". These m'e commonly regarded as domesticated, yet they are much less dependent on man .than most animals of this category; so the?, can, in my opinion, be treated in man?, ways as natural populations. London alley-cats, for instance, appear to mate at random (Searle, 194-9), which suggests that human influence on their choice of mates is negligible. Human selection is exercised almost entirely by keeping some kittens and discarding others. Those discarded may be kiIled or just left by the wayside to fend for them- selves, adding to the feral group if they survive. In much of Europe, but less commonly in Asia, human selection also operates by sterilising a high proportion of aduh males and some females too. -

Tipper's Story
TIPPER’S STORY I breed a Purebred cat- The RagaMuffin. Although a healthy breed, it seems like the past 9 months I have had an issue or two. Nothing serious, a running eye in one or two, sneezing occasionally. I keep them clean and have eye ointment if needed. I keep a normal vaccination schedule. I start kittens at 8 weeks with the Heska Ultra-Nasal FVRCP vac- cine. Then 12 weeks, then 16 weeks. For RagaMuffins we then do a booster of the same vaccine each year. I test for FeLV and FIP randomly and we have always been negative. The only health problem (and this is an unproven allegation) I have had is a kitten I sold to a fellow breeder that claimed he has Strep-G. One of the kittens died and she began to give the other Clindamycin and they seemed to do well and are ok now. She never tested him or provided any records to me as outlined in our contract. During research, I found Group G Strep. Are they the same thing? About 5 months ago one of my Dams had complications after delivering her kittens. We lost her. We were devasted! But, her kittens were ok except for the fact they were born in the vet’s office. I had another Mom, so I put the kittens on her and bottled fed “the odd man out”. I gave them Co- lostrum even though I think they got mamas. After a few days, only one kitten survived, “Tipper” so we bottle fed him for quite a while. -

FELINOTECHNIC TERMS GLOSSARY Adelphogamy Brother to sister breeding. Admitted Is said of a character allowed by the standard, without being searched for as a goal in breed selection. Affix Designation added to the animal’s name, mentioning the cattery of origin. It can be put before the cat’s name (prefix) or after it (suffix). It is the cat’s “surname”, in some way. Agouti Name given to a hair showing alternation of light and dark zones. That character is controlled by a gene whose A allele, wild and dominant, reveals the tabby pattern present in all cats: in a non agouti cat (having two aa recessive alleles), the agouti hair zones which should have been light coloured become almost as dark as the stripes. The latter being no longer distinct, the cat is often abusively said “non tabby”. Albinism Total absence of pigment, due to mutations affecting the tyrosinase enzyme coding gene (C locus in felinotechny). All Breed (judge) Is said of a judge entitled to judge all breeds. Allele One among several forms of a gene that is at a given locus. Example: for the L locus, we know L (responsible for shorthair) and l (responsible for longhair or semi longhair) alleles. For B locus, we know B (black eumelanin), b (chocolate eumelanin) and bl (light brown eumelanin that gives the colour called cinnamon). Allelic series An allelic series gathers all the mutations of a gene. In the same series, the classification always starts with the dominant allele, then, in decreasing order of dominance, the other alleles. Example: C series which is in charge of colour distribution on the body; C is dominant over cb (Burmese), itself being dominant over cs (Siamese), itself dominant over ca (light blue eyed albino). -

Introduction This breeding policy accompanies and supplements the Manx Registration Policy and Standard of Points and the GCCF general breeding policy and should be read in conjunction with those documents. The aim of this breeding policy is to give advice and guidance to ensure breeders observe what is considered “best practice” in breeding the Manx cat. The over-riding objective, as with all breeds, is to produce quality, healthy cats with good type and to continue to improve the Manx cat standard. The overall aims of the breeding policy areas are as follows: a) To promote the breeding of healthy Manx cats with sound conformation, good temperament and free from any defects known to be heritable traits. b) To encourage the breeding of Manx which conform as closely as possible to the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) Standard of Points (SOP). c) To further the health, welfare and care of Manx Cats at all times, in keeping with their role as domesticated companion cats with their unique “dog-like” personality.
