From 1774, as the East India Company conquered the semi-autonomous Rohilla state and introduced new administrative measures, service professionals—who were key mediators of changes in governance—were faced with a choice: should they implement, actively resist or escape this development? Departing from historiography that has seen such figures through the eyes of the Company archive, this dissertation seeks to investigate how they documented their encounter with incipient modes of colonial rule. In a range of original works, comprising Persian and Urdu memoirs, biographies, chronicles and poetry, they elaborated their ii circumstances within and beyond the former Afghan principalities, reflecting on the regional frontiers that were constantly shifting in their lifetimes as an older skein of imperial provinces was being eroded. My dissertation argues that through their writings these figures generated a political discourse centered on distinctive conceptions of regional and imperial politics, history, service, and customary law. This discourse continued to echo in the provinces through the nineteenth century, even as the history of these actors was obscured by the rise of colonial and nationalist modernity. iii The dissertation of Naveena Naqvi is approved. Having finished my dissertation, it is an honor to be able to offer them these thanks. Through the pre-PhD years, the history classes that I took as a BA and MA student in Delhi University with Shahid Amin, Arup Banerji, Sunil Kumar, Anshu Malhotra, Dilip Menon, Shivshankar Menon, Upinder Singh and Rohit Wanchoo, introduced me to a world of critical thought and historical inquiry. As a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, I took a transformative class with with Neeladri Bhattacharya on historical methods. I also had numerous enriching discussions with Lakshmi Subramanian and Tanika Sarkar about the social history of music in Rampur and Calcutta in the late nineteenth century, the subject of my MPhil research. Under their guidance, I began what later become a profund attachment to the world of archives and libraries. I felt less alone in this new-found practice in the company of my fellow-researchers at JNU, Meghna Chaudhuri, Mekhola Gomes, Par Larson, Anandaroop Sen, and Charu Singh, among others. Taken together, over the course of a BA, an MA and an MPhil in History, I slowly discovered historical research, aside from being all-absorbing, was grounded in friendship. At UCLA, I have been fortunate to have had two co-chairs who mentored me as I found my way to a subject of inquiry. Nile Green patiently read every chapter in multiple drafts, printing all of them out and writing detailed comments on the last page, pushing me towards more clarity and skilfull use of my materials. I also learnt from him that one never has an idea until it is down on paper and how to overcome the fear of imperfect prose. How he guided me and remained so accessible to me as he juggled multiple research projects will always be something I remember with tremendous gratitude. On days that I rewrote my prospectus from ix scratch or solicited feedback on chapters, Sanjay Subrahmanyam offered comments and was there to speak with me encouragingly and always with characteristically extensive references to works that I had not previously considered or was unaware of. He has illustrated through his own career how to be ambitiously imaginative as one goes about excavating the past. I hope to do some justice to the example of erudition he set in my own career. Besides my co-chairs, it was a privilege to have Bin Wong and Michael Cooperson on the dissertation committee. Bin Wong read and discussed chapters of the dissertation at various stages with me and frequently offered helpful comments. Michael Cooperson made important suggestions at different junctures before I undertook research and after I wrote the chapters. At UCLA, I also benefitted from the warmth and encouragement of other faculty and staff members who nurtured a sense of community amongst graduate students. The environment and natural resources play an important role in its development. The ideas of aesthetics reflected in art and architecture indicate an advanced stage of human cultures and finally the civilization. It is here that the ideas and techniques of a society find visual expression.1 Art and architecture manifest itself in temples, mosques, monasteries, mausoleums and memorials, and represent the true character of the culture of the period as they reflect the mindset and approach of that society.

And accompanying these were the melodious sounds of the sarangi or flute and the ghunghroos on the beat of the tabla that quickened the heartbeat. So great was the city’s preoccupation with music, that a distinctive style of classical music, rooted in the local folk culture, emerged and was embodied in the Benaras Gharana ( school or a distinctive style of music originating in a family tradition or lineage that can be traced to an instructor or region). A few miles from Benares, there is a village called Torvan, which appears to be like any other Thakur Brahmin village of that region. But there is a difference. This village had a few families belonging to the Gandharva Jati, a group whose traditional occupation was music and its allied arts. Amongst Gandharvas, it was the men who went out to perform while the women stayed behind.

    Memoranda and Documents A NOTE ON THE ORIGINS OF “UNCLE SAM,” 1810–1820 donald r. hickey ONVENTIONAL wisdom holds that “Uncle Sam,” the popular C personification for the United States government, was inspired during the War of 1812 by Samuel Wilson, who, along with an older brother, Ebenezer, supplied the army with meat from Troy, New York. The Wilsons employed as many as two hundred people, includ- ing many relatives who had moved to Troy to work in the diversified family business. The nieces and nephews referred to Sam Wilson as Uncle Sam, and such was his friendly and easy-going nature that the nickname caught on among other employees and townspeople. Due to confusion over the meaning of the abbreviation “U.S.,” which was stamped on army barrels and supply wagons, the nickname suppos- edly migrated from Wilson to the federal government in 1812.1 The author has incurred numerous debts in writing this article. Georg Mauerhoff of NewsBank provided indispensable guidance in using the NewsBank databases, es- pecially the Readex newspaper collection.     Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism and History in India Gyanendra Pandey CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Remembering Partition Violence, Nationalism and History in India Through an investigation of the violence that marked the partition of British India in 1947, this book analyses questions of history and mem- ory, the nationalisation of populations and their pasts, and the ways in which violent events are remembered (or forgotten) in order to en- sure the unity of the collective subject – community or nation. Stressing the continuous entanglement of ‘event’ and ‘interpretation’, the author emphasises both the enormity of the violence of 1947 and its shifting meanings and contours. The book provides a sustained critique of the procedures of history-writing and nationalist myth-making on the ques- tion of violence, and examines how local forms of sociality are consti- tuted and reconstituted by the experience and representation of violent events. It concludes with a comment on the different kinds of political community that may still be imagined even in the wake of Partition and events like it. GYANENDRA PANDEY is Professor of Anthropology and History at Johns Hopkins University. He was a founder member of the Subaltern Studies group and is the author of many publications including The Con- struction of Communalism in Colonial North India (1990) and, as editor, Hindus and Others: the Question of Identity in India Today (1993).     Jadavpur University Faculty of Arts Department of History SYLLABUS Preface The Department of History, Jadavpur University, was born in August 1956 because of the Special Importance Attached to History by the National Council of Education. The necessity for reconstructing the history of humankind with special reference to India‘s glorious past was highlighted by the National Council in keeping with the traditions of this organization. The subsequent history of the Department shows that this centre of historical studies has played an important role in many areas of historical knowledge and fundamental research. As one of the best centres of historical studies in the country, the Department updates and revises its syllabi at regular intervals. It was revised last in 2008 and is again being revised in 2011.The syllabi that feature in this booklet have been updated recently in keeping with the guidelines mentioned in the booklet circulated by the UGC on ‗Model Curriculum‘. The course contents of a number of papers at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels have been restructured to incorporate recent developments - political and economic - of many regions or countries as well as the trends in recent historiography. To cite just a single instance, as part of this endeavour, the Department now offers new special papers like ‗Social History of Modern India‘ and ‗History of Science and Technology‘ at the Postgraduate level. The Department is the first in Eastern India and among the few in the country, to introduce a full-scale specialization on the ‗Social History of Science and Technology‘. The Department recently qualified for SAP.
