Lucas, Purdue University Calumet, USA Jonathan M. Furdek, Purdue University Calumet, USA ABSTRACT On October 10, 2007, the UAW membership ratified a landmark, 456-page labor agreement with General Motors. Following pattern bargaining, the UAW also reached agreement with Chrysler LLC and then Ford Motor Company. This paper will examine the major provisions of these groundbreaking labor agreements, including the creation of the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA), the establishment of a two tier wage structure for newly hired workers, the job security provisions, the new wage package for hourly workers, and the shift to defined contribution plans for new hires. The paper will also provide an economic analysis of these labor agreements to consider both if the “Big Three” automakers can remain competitive in the global market and what will be their impact on the UAW and its membership. Keywords: UAW, 2007 Negotiations, Labor Contracts BACKGROUND he 2007 labor negotiations among the Big Three automakers (General Motors, Chrysler LLC, and Ford Motor) and the United Autoworkers (UAW) proved to be historic, as well as controversial as they sought mutually to agree upon labor contracts that would “usher in a new era for the auto Tindustry.” Both parties realized the significance of attaining these groundbreaking labor agreements, in order for the American auto industry to survive and compete successfully in the global economy. For the UAW, with its declining membership of approximately 520,000, that once topped 1.5 million members, a commitment from the Big Three automakers for product investments to protect jobs and a new health care trust fund were major goals. -

Roa, editors The mission of the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain is to sustainably increase the productivity of banana and plantain grown on smallholdings for domestic consumption and for local and export markets. The Programme has four specific objectives: · To organize and coordinate a global research effort on banana and plantain, aimed at the development, evaluation and dissemination of improved banana cultivars and at the conservation and use of Musa diversity. · To promote and strengthen collaboration and partnerships in banana-related activities at the national, regional and global levels. · To strengthen the ability of NARS to conduct research and development activities on bananas and plantains. · To coordinate, facilitate and support the production, collection and exchange of information and documentation related to banana and plantain. Since May 1994, INIBAP is a programme of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) is an autonomous international scientific organization, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IPGRIs mandate is to advocate the conservation and use of plant genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations. IPGRIs headquarters is based in Rome, Italy, with offices in another 14 countries worldwide. It operates through three programmes: (1) the Plant Genetic Resources Programme, (2) the CGIAR Genetic Resources Support Programme, and (3) the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). -

Student Department of History The University of Alabama [email protected] World War I dominates the history of American military institutions from 1917-1919. Scholarship on the U.S. Marine Corps is no different and many have argued that Marine actions in the spring and summer of 1918 against the last German offensive on the Western Front served as the coming of age story for Corps.1 Marines came out of the war with a new and improved force structure, a population of officers and men experienced in modern war, and, perhaps even more significantly, a sense of vindication. The opportunity to prove their worth to the other services and to the American people in a large war arrived and they succeeded. Relatively little scholarly attention, however, has been given to how the Great War affected Marines who did not fight in France, especially the ones deployed to Hispaniola. Therefore, the full extent of the Great War’s impact on the Marine Corps remains largely neglected. In several similar and significant ways the Great War affected, often negatively, the Marine missions in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The war damaged morale among many Marines, especially among the brigade commanders like Smedley Butler and George C. Thorpe who preferred very much to transfer to France rather than remain at their posts in Haiti and Santo Domingo respectively. The UN wants all states to agree to international laws. This can happen if they make them together. They also want to make sure people know the laws. This can happen if they are written down and published. This makes it easier for states to work together. It also stops wars from happening. They also ask states to make laws to protect citizens. Every year the General Assembly gives this group a discussion list. If the legal question is difficult or complex this group asks for help from the International Law Commission. This committee has a tradition of consensus. States reach agreement without having to take a vote. This makes sense because if you want everybody to follow a law they should agree it is a good idea. This group works closely with the International Law Commission. They passed resolutions on international terrorism, human cloning, and taking hostages. Agenda Item 79 – Diplomatic Protection A lot of people confuse Diplomatic Protection with Diplomatic Immunity. Diplomatic Immunity is given to diplomats of a government who enter (with permission) into another country in order to do work for their own country. An ambassador or anybody who is sent from their home country to work at an embassy has Diplomatic Immunity. This law allows diplomats to do their Jobs in safety. They do not have to fear being Jailed or mistreated by the country they are working in. -

Women in the Banana Export Industry Regional Report on Latin America Working paper - Series for the World Banana Forum by Anna Cooper, Banana Link May 2015 2 Summary Women in the Banana Export Industry Regional Report on Latin America is part of a global report on the economic aspects of gender issues in the banana sector. It is based on research conducted in Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua with a primary focus on the situation for hired labour and analyses levels of women’s employment in the region and the key challenges for women workers. The report will inform the work of the World Banana Forum1. The average proportion of women employed in the Latin American banana industry is 12.5%, although this varies within and between countries. A key reason for this low rate of women's employment in the sector is the limited access of women to the whole range of work tasks on the plantation. Women tend to be restricted to work in the 'more controlled environment' of the packing shed in part due to the gender stereotyping of women. Many field tasks are perceived to be too technically difficult or too physically demanding for women to undertake but tend to be better paid. Women are viewed primarily as domestic actors and childcare providers. The occupational health and safety risks for women identified are particularly those related to the effects of agrochemical exposure on reproductive health. Other problems faced by women workers are sexual harassment, discrimination when pregnant, a lack of childcare provision and the additional burdens faced by women managing childcare, domestic duties and in some cases, trade union activity. -

The Growth of the Banana Industry in Costa Rica and Its Effect on Biodiversity: History and Loss of Biodiversity THE HISTORY OF BANANAS IN COSTA RICA Historically banana plantations have played an integral part in Costa Rica's economy. The first banana plantation was created in 1872 and commercial export began in 1879. By 1899, The United Fruit Company was formed and went on to become well established throughout Central America within several countries, which were known, as the "banana republics". However, by 1956, the Costa Rican government had become concerned about the number of plantations, which had been developed and abandoned due to "Panama Disease" (a root fungus), not to mention the careless use of the country’s natural resources by the United Fruit Company (Hernadez and Witter, 1996). At this point the government recruited the Standard Fruit Company (now Dole, a subsidiary of Castle and Cooke) who began purchasing small amounts of fruit from local growers. Unfortunately it was also at this point in time that the use of agro-chemicals was put into practice, with this came the use of large amounts of pesticides, fungicides, nematocides, (Astorga, 1996) and other chemicals, as well as other intensive field and processing management. As of 1967, the United Fruit Company became known as the United Brands Company and the Chiquita label was introduced into Costa Rica. In 1968 another company, Del Monte, through [its] subsidiary, BANDECO, started producing and exporting from the Atlantic Zone. These three companies, Dole, Chiquita, and Del Monte are known as the "Big Three" in Costa Rica (McCracken, 1998). -

INTRODUCTION By Diana Nyad For two decades, the GENDER IN TELEVISED SPORTS report has tracked the progress— as well as the lack of progress—in the coverage of women’s sports on television news and highlights shows. One of the positive outcomes derived from past editions of this valuable study has been a notable improvement in the often‐derogatory ways that sports commentators used to routinely speak of women athletes. The good news in this report is that there is far less insulting and overtly sexist treatment of women athletes than there was twenty or even ten years ago. -

HISTORY REPEATS: NIGHTCLUB FIRE IN RUSSIA KILLS 152 Associated Press, stories from December 5 to 25, 2009 Russian officials say the death toll from a nightclub fire in the Urals city ofPerm On December 5th has risen to 152. The regional branch ofthe Emergency Situations Ministry said that two more women died oftheir injuries on December 24th and 74 other victims are still hospitalized. 'The circumstances ofthis fire are eerily similarto the 2003 Rhode Island nightclub fire in which 100 people died (ACTS FACTS, 3 & 9/03). Just as inRhode Island, the blaze atthe Lame Horse nightclub in Perm broke out when pyrotechnics ignited insulation.
