    Russell and feminism by Katharine Tait I HAVE BEEN asked to speak to you about Russell and feminism. An easy topic~ I thought. Everybody knows he was in favour of it­ almost literally born to it: delivered by the first woman doctor, godfathered by John Stuart Mill; and the son oftwo ardent feminists. His mother made speeches for women's suffrage inthe 1860s. He was raised by women, nurtured by two very strong-minded grand­ mothers and an aunt. And as early as 1907 he stood for Parliament as a women's suffrage candidate. Obviously, he must have been a feminist. All I needed to do was to find enough evidence ofit to fill up halfan hour's talk. I turned to the sources I had at hand. I looked in the index of Ronald Clark's biography of Russell. No entry for "feminism". No entry for "woman". And under "women's suffrage", only an account of the awful Wimbledon by-election of 1907 in which he stood for women's suffrage. His advocacy provoked violent opposition, and he lost. That is all I found in Clark, so I concluded that perhaps Clark had a masculine bias. Then I went to the Autobiography and looked in all three volumes, under "feminism", under "woman" and under "women'ssuffrage", and I didn't find anything. Then I began to think: what am I going to do? How am I going to find out anything to tell these people except just what I happen to remember? So I tried all the other odds and ends of Russell books that I have"":""and I found nothing.

    Bertrand Russell: The False Consciousness ofa Feminist 1 BRIAN HARRISON "The gulf between men and women is terrific", Bertrand Russell told Lady Ottoline Morrell in 1913."1 suppose they never understand each other­ and I think where sex attraction is absent there is a natural antipathy. Most people have a sort of sex-patriotism, which makes them instinctively stand by their own sex."2 There are many parallels between class- and sex­ consciousness. To name only three: similar preconditions (largely urban and industrial) exist for the emergence of both; each aspires to all­ inclusiveness, and therefore aims ultimately to cut across the other; and the sharpness of each alignment is blurred by a minority which neglects short­ term self-interest by refusing to identify politically with its own kind. This third parallel is the focus of attention here, for in the conflict of interest between the sexes Russell displayed a "false consciousness" analogous to the response ofthe bourgeois Marxist or proletarian conservative in the class war; that is to say, he aimed-in his political, intellectual and personal life-to moderate and even eliminate a potential polarization of society. Such apparently altruistic minorities are of special interest, not simply because their altruism demands explanation, but because their minority situation enriches their opportunities for perceiving significant social ten­ dencies. It is. s~rprisin~ th~t a r~cent study ofmale ~eminists3 fails to anal'y~e the compleXIties of theIr SItuatIOn, or even to mention Russell's presenie in their midst. In its theoretical Marxist application, the term "false consciousness" is essentially descriptive; it aims simply to specify a social and politicalloca­ tion, and the same can be said ofits application to the sphere ofgender.

    Bertrand Russell: from liberalism to socialism? by Royden Hamson INTRODUCTION WRITING IN 1935 E. Halevy observed: "If in fifty or a hundred years someone writes the history of modern English thought, he will class Bertrand Russell among the individualists and libertarians, not among the socialists."l This judgment has been supported by careful historians and clever philosophers. Thus, Jo Vellacott asserts that he stayed with liberal values, but let the Liberal Party go. She adds: "Perhaps Russell had too much liberal baggage to travel far on the socialist tram, but it can also be argued that the destination of the socialist tram-the ever­ stronger centralized state-was not the one that Russell had bought a ticket for...."2 The argument that empiricism is not merely often asso­ ciated with liberalism, but entails it, is presented in a clearly argued essay by B.R. Barber.3 Still more to the point, one can find many instances of Russell distancing himself from socialism and reaffirming his faith in "liberal values". These declarations may be all the more impressive because they are separated by long spans of time. (Russell to Brittain, 14 May 1957 ) he year is 1957, the context a protest march of women in black sashes (12 May 1957 ), organised by the National Council for the TAbolition of Nuclear Weapons Tests (NCANWT ), that would rapidly escalate into regular Easter marches from the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment Aldermaston to London,1 sponsored by NCANWT’s successor, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND ).2 Mrs Russell’s participation in these early beginnings of post-World War II protests against renewed threats to peace and the survival of humankind was the continuation of campaigns for peace and women’s rights that she had conducted for as long as her contemporary Vera Brittain.

    Saving Civilization from the “‘Green-Eyed’ Monster”: Emma Goldman and the Sex Reform Campaign against Jealousy, 1900–1930 CARLA HUSTAK In 1912, sex radical and anarchist Emma Goldman warned that a “‘green-eyed’ monster” was overtaking homes, nations, workplaces, and even possessing the bodies of its victims. Goldman claimed that “the most prevalent evil of our mutilated love life is jealousy, often described as the ‘green-eyed’ monster who lies, cheats, betrays, and kills.”1 By 1912, Goldman had emigrated to the United States from Russia, immersed herself in anarchist politics, defied the law on numerous occasions, earned the epithet Red Emma, and become notorious for free love sexual mores.2 Although a well-known figure within Greenwich Village among the white middle-class bohemian intelligentsia, Goldman also had a number of international ties to the sex reform movement. She visited British sex reformer Edward Carpenter’s utopian commune, corresponded with Bertrand Russell, and attended one of Freud’s early lectures in 1895.3 Much like Goldman’s international reputation, her warning of the “‘green-eyed’ monster” highlighted embodied political alliances among liberal capitalist nations. Goldman’s attention to jealousy drew on a transnational conversation among sex reformers that located early twentieth-century burgeoning American capitalism, patriarchy, and empire in a broader narrative of kinship among white liberal capitalist nations that was affectively inscribed on white middle-class bodies.
