Building Community . . .Through Prayer

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. ~ Acts 2:42

February 16, 2020

This week’s prayer focus: “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” – Habakkuk 3: 17-18

Christian joy does not mean that we ignore or deny the pain of suffering and grief. Nevertheless, suffering and grief can lead to joy, for trouble provides an opportunity for us to deepen our relationship with Christ and to learn how to walk more intimately with Him. The apostle James, in fact, tells us to “count it all joy” when we endure trials and tribulations. Counting our suffering as joy is certainly easier said than done. Still, one fundamental biblical truth can help us find joy in our pain, namely, that all of our difficulties are limited in duration. For the believer, pain is not forever, as there is a new heaven and earth coming. God will one day right all wrongs and thus wipe away every tear from our eyes. As we trust in Him to impart strength and confidence to us, He will work in our hearts to lead us to rejoice even when times are lean and painful. – R.C. Sproul

Prayer needs in our church community: Pray for the NJ Faith Church this week. This is the Korean congregation that shares our sanctuary and our facilities. Ask God to use their ministry to bless the local Korean community.

Prayer needs in our local community: Thank God for the report from New City Kids Church last Sunday. Pray for New City Kids, which does such vital work with inner city youth in Jersey City, Paterson, and Grand Rapids, and thank God for the reports of lives transformed through their program. Pray for the staff, and ask God to grant them the strength and energy they need to continue to serve in this life-changing ministry.

Prayer needs in our national community: Pray for our nation’s journalists this week. Ask the Lord to convince them of the need to speak truth and not propaganda and to value sincerity over sensationalism. Ask God to grant you discernment in recognizing and rejecting inaccurate messages that run contrary to His truth.

Prayer needs in our world community: As we continue to pray for the least-reached nations on earth, please pray for the nation of Somalia this week. Somalia, a nation on the horn of Africa, has been overrun with civil war, violence, and poverty. They have the seventh highest birth rate in the world, but the second highest maternal mortality rate, and the fourth highest infant mortality rate. There are 22 people groups in Somalia, 16 of which have never heard the Gospel. The majority of those living in Somalia are Sunni Muslims, and Islamic fundamentalists have vowed to eliminate all Christians from Somalia, which has led to the persecution of believers. Pray for the approximately 4,000 Somali Christians. Ask God to protect them and to use them as a force for Him in this war-torn nation.

“Always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” – Ephesians 6:18

Prayer of Appreciation: Bill, Linda, and the entire Brock family thank Pastor Michael, the council, and the congregation for their cards and prayers in the recent passing of Clarice Brock Dansen. We feel blessed to belong to the family of Cedar Hill.

Prayer of Healing: The Anema Famil would like to thank everyone for your prayers and support regarding Mark’s brother, Dave’s, cancer surgery. Unfortunately, the cancer was not removed last week and will require additional radiation therapy and another surgery in the near future. Please continue to pray for Dave and the rest of the family as he continues treatment. Keep Tanette Botbyl in prayer as she is suffering from a broken wrist. Pray for complete healing and for peace for her during this difficult time. Please continue to keep Pastor Michael’s mother, Sandra Johnson, in your prayers as she is currently suffering from some serious health issues. Pray for healing for her and also pray for her children as they provide care for her from considerable distances, which is quite difficult.

Pray for our church family: Keith, Mandi, Hannah, Erin, and Laura Post Ken, Wendy, Kathryn, Joseph, and Jared Post

Pray for those with ongoing concerns and those who are homebound: Jean Stonehouse Marge Bandstra Glenn Dyksen Jim Unrath Edna Smith Al Borduin Carl Bryant Jorge Dyksen Min De Witte David De Koek Bernice Bushoven
