CAGW was founded in 1984 by the late industrialist J. Peter Grace and nationally-syndicated columnist Jack Anderson to build support for implementation of the Grace Commission recommendations and other waste-cutting proposals. Since its inception, CAGW has been at the forefront of the fight for efficiency, economy, and accountability in government. CAGW has more than one million members and supporters nationwide. In a little over two decades, has helped save taxpayers $1.08 trillion through the implementation of Grace Commission findings and other recommendations. BURDETTEt INTRODUCTION When Jeffrey Nichols, a wealthy consultant, decided to divorce his wife of sixteen years in order to marry a younger woman, he was ordered to pay $9000 a month in support for his three children.' Believing that the children's grandfather would support them, Nichols ignored his child support obligations and, instead, lived in luxury with his second wife for over five years.2 After cleaning out his accounts in New York, where the children and his ex-wife still reside, he moved to Toronto.3 In an attempt to evade law enforce- ment officials who make it their business to search for "deadbeat dads," Nichols then moved to Boca Raton, Florida and later to Vermont.4 He also attempted to conceal some of his assets by placing them in his second wife's name and in offshore accounts that could not be traced.5 The law finally caught up with Nichols when his second wife, in the process of filing for divorce, signed an affidavit stating that Nichols had been avoiding child support payments for five years.' Jackson Introduction The 2004 U.S. Senate race in Illinois may prove to be one of the most significant in American history. Perhaps not since the Senate election of 1858, when Stephen Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln, has one Senate election had such an impact on the national leadership cadre. Although Lincoln lost the election, his speeches and debates with Douglas over slavery and the future of the Union ensured his place as a national leader of the young Republican Party and then as a leading contender for the Republican nomination in 1860 (Goodman, 2005). Although Barack Obama is one of one hundred Senators, and a freshman at that, he has quickly become a much sought after speaker, and his influence has spread far beyond the usual parameters for a first-term Senator. Obama is the first African-American male Senator to be elected since Edward Brooke of Massachusetts. He is the second African- American elected to the Senate from Illinois following former Senator Carol Moseley Braun, who was elected in 1992 and then defeated in 1998 (Kenney and Hartley, 2003, 203-209). With the exception of the post Civil War Reconstruction Era, Brooke, Braun, and now Obama are the only three popularly elected African-American Senators in American history. -
