Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the functions of Old Kingdom false doors, which are essential funerary equipment for the private tombs of the Egyptian elite. In previous research, two major religious roles of false doors, has been defined: firstly, as connecting doors etc; and secondly as the focus for the presentation of offerings for the deceased. By examining the types of inscriptions on the false doors and their location within the architectural structure of tombs this study will show that, in addition, Old Kingdom false doors also fulfilled roles centred on the living in their presentation of offerings and prayers to the deceased and the deceased’s ka. The textual evidence clearly indicates that the living and the dead established a relationship on the basis of the principle of do ut des, a relationship in which the false doors played a significant role. Also known as the god-kings of ancient Egypt, made the laws, and owned all the land. Warfare was an important part of their rule. In accordance to their status as gods on earth, the Pharaohs built monuments and temples in honor of themselves and the gods of the land. Egypt was conquered by the Kingdom of Kush in 656 BC, whose rulers adopted the pharaonic titles. Following the Kushite conquest, Egypt would first see another period of independent native rule before being conquered by the Persian Empire, whose rulers also adopted the title of Pharaoh. Persian rule over Egypt came to an end through the conquests of Alexander the Great in 332 BC, after which it was ruled by the Hellenic Pharaohs of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. They also built temples such as the one at Edfu and Dendara. Their rule, and the independence of Egypt, came to an end when Egypt became a province of Rome in 30 BC. The Pharaohs who ruled Egypt are large in number - - here is a selection. Narmer King Narmer is believed to be the same person as Menes around 3100 BC. He unified Upper and Lower Egypt and combined the crown of Lower Egypt with that of Upper Egypt. Decorum was a social force that restricted and defined the ways in which individuals could engage in material displays of identity and religious practice. Four-hundred and ninety-four votive stelae were examined in an attempt to identify trends and patters on self- display and religious practice. Each iconographic and textual element depicted on the stelae was treated as a variable which was entered into a database and statistically analyzed to search for trends of self-display. The analysis of the stelae revealed the presence of multiple social groups at Asyut. By examining the forms of capital displayed, it was possible to identify these social groups and reconstruct the social hierarchy of the site. This analysis demonstrated how the religious system was largely appropriated by elite men as a stage to engage in individual competitive displays of identity and capital as a means of reinforcing their profession and position in society and the II patronage structure.

She earned a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles where she majored in History, received College Honors, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. From 2007-2008, Julia was also a Departmental Scholar in the Department of Near Eastern Langauges and Cultures and wrote a thesis entitled “Political Implications of Hatshepsut’s Building Program in the Greater Theban Region.” After graduation Julia taught high school English and World History at High Bluff Academy in San Diego, California before enrolling in her Ph.D. program at Brown University in 2009. During her time at Brown University Julia has taught her own undergraduate course, “Daily Life in Ancient Egypt,” and taught for the Summer at Brown Program for five years, including the classes “Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs,” “Ancient Egyptian Religion and Magic,” and “Art and Archaeology of Ancient Egypt.” Julia also worked at the Brown University Writing Center where she received training in teaching English for English Language Learners.

The author was required to conduct an expert review of an Egyptian false-door purchased several years earlier from an art gallery, in conjunction with colleagues. A detailed report based on the study was requested.2 The objectives were to certify the authenticity of the false-door and to establish its probable date of manufacture, and finally, to establish its possible archaeological provenance, which has been achieved with a good degree of certainty. The false-door is of special interest due to the atypical scenes represented on its left inner jamb, where priests are shown performing a series of rites. Our study focused on details of the iconographic, material, epigraphic, and manufacturing techniques that can be seen with the naked eye. No archaeometric physical analysis was performed. With respect to the technical aspects of the visual analysis, the monument was first documented photographically using an SLR camera in manual mode, without flash.
