January 3, 2011 > Chicago, IL Worldwide Music Services, a new print music & media distributor, will be exhibiting at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California for the first time ever, in January 2011. Following its successful 2010 exhibits at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville, the RPMDA (Retail Print Music Deal- ers Association) convention in Oklahoma City, and the Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany, Worldwide Music Ser- vices is looking forward to attending Winter NAMM, the largest convention of its kind in North America. Worldwide Music Services will be debuting its new website at the show. Visitors to the booth will be able to see a demonstration of the site, and dealers who sign up for access will be able to enter a drawing for free product and other prizes. Attending the show will be VP Phil Smith, Sales Associate Jeff Hansel, Director of Operations Justin Wells, and Di- rector of Web Operations Steve Devaney. In addition to exhibiting publications by industry leaders (and NAMM exhibitors) Hal Leonard, Alfred, Carl Fischer and Mel Bay, the Worldwide Music Services booth will also feature numerous titles from non-exhibiting publishers such as Kjos, FJH, Frederick Harris, Santorella, Bourne, Archives, See Sharp, Theory Time, Ward Bowen, Kendor, Skeptical Guitarist, Roland White, Watch & Learn, Mark Wessels, Charles Colin, and others. Featured and exclusive publishers include: • Mike Garson Publishing. Pianist Mike Garson, who has played with countless rock, pop and jazz musicians (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard and others) has begun his own publishing house featuring his popular compositions, as well as his own top-notch arrangements (such as the “Gershwin Fantasia.”) Garson is joined in this venture by flutist Jim Walker (former principal flute at the LA Philharmonic, and recipient of the 2008 National Flute Association Lifetime Achievement Award.) Walker is also known from his band Free Flight (which also features Mike Garson) and his soundtrack performances (Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump and Gladiator.) Mike Garson will be making periodic appearances at the Worldwide Music Services NAMM booth on Thursday and Friday. • Or-tav and Israel Brass Woodwind Publications. This prominent Israeli publisher of classical, Middle Eastern, Greek, and Klezmer music is now available from Worldwide Music Services on a non-exclusive basis. Ethnic mu- sic enthusiasts will not want to miss this opportunity to browse their books on Middle Eastern percussion, Maqam, and bouzouki; brass and woodwind players will appreciate this catalog of classical repertoire, from the traditional Baroque masters up through contemporary Israeli composers. Author Yale Strom (a Klezmer musician and author of many books on the genre, in cluding his latest “Dave Tarras: King of Klezmer,”) will be at the Worldwide Music Services NAMM booth on Friday. Dealers can visit with Yale and browse a variety of his books which will be on display. • EZ-KEY Publishing. Scott Vallery’s EZ-KEY, an educational tool for guitarists, was featured in a prominent booth at last winter’s NAMM show. Worldwide Music Services joins EZ-KEY this year (the booths are across the aisle from each other) as a non-exclusive distributor. Vallery will be on hand to answer questions about this award-winning product line. • Muzik Egitimi Yayinari. CZECH (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This project opens space for looking at the world in a musical way where “jamming” with music through playing and listening to it helps one resist a more standardized and dualistic way of seeing the world. Instead of having a traditional dissertation, this project is organized like a record album where each chapter is a Track that contains an original song that parallels and plays off the subject matter being discussed to make a more encompassing, multidimensional, holistic, improvisational, and critical statement as the songs and riffs move along together to tell why an arts-based musical way of being can be a choice and alternative in our lives.

Likewise, Lemmy seemed too much a part of rock’s scenery to leave us so soon. As we went to press with this issue, we also learned the sad news that Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had passed (look out for a full tribute next month), making this winter the worst in memory for losing legends. The only very slight consolation for all this is that it prompted us to listen again to the music that made them household names. In the case of Bowie, it was a reminder of the astonishing breadth and ambition of his music-making (see cover feature, p76). Rightly regarded as classic now, Bowie’s music must have been sensational when he was starting out – and I’m sure not everyone ‘got it’ at the time. Passing years have a habit of making the new and strange in music feel comfortably familiar, and finally classic. That thought has been a reminder of the importance of seeking out uncommon sounds, and not just sticking to your comfort zone of old favourites.

  • Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Tiffany Naiman 2017 © Copyright by Tiffany Naiman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music by Tiffany Naiman Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robert W. Fink, Co-Chair Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair This dissertation investigates musical expressions of temporal alterities in works created by popular music artists, identifying their aesthetic responses as their bodies become ill, disabled, and they become more aware of mortality. I propose a critical, hermeneutic, and theoretical method drawn from Edward Said’s appropriation of Adorno’s expression “late style” that I have designated ill style, a form of creativity within a temporality of illness. Late style is discernable in works produced, paradigmatically, at the end of one’s career in “old age,” but late style may also be understood as an influence on artistic output at any stage of life if the subject is experiencing untimeliness and a disruption in access to the communal understanding of futurity and time, a possible consequence of factors other than age. I contend that late style, accelerated by illness, disrupts Western cultural attempts at ignoring precarious and finite nature of existence; the resulting expressions of lateness ask audiences to do the same. I offer a way in which to think more critically about what scholars consider late style, how it functions in popular ii music studies and society, and how it intersects with the fields of disability, gender, queer, and critical race studies, and the social sciences.

A covers Ja lot of musical territory,Z andZ many of its varied styles are represented here. Stride piano from the 1920s rubs shoulders with swing from the 1940s, classic combo sounds from the 1950s, salsa-flavored dance music, and recently created pieces that stretch the very boundaries of jazz. All of these were recorded by "Prof." Keith O. Johnson, some live, some in studios, some in concert halls with superb acoustics – always with his own microphones, cables and electronics. The earliest was done with his first hand-built analogue tape recorder sporting three channels; the most recent with cutting-edge high-resolution digital technology.
