Pianist Mike Garson was David Bowies most frequent musician, on record and onstage throughout Bowies life. They played over a thousand shows together between 1972 and 2004, and Garson is featured on over 20 of Bowies albums. Bowies Piano Man is the first-ever biography of Mike Garson, written by Clifford Slapper, a fellow pianist who also played for Bowie, working closely with him on his last-ever television appearance. The book explores the special relationship between Garson and Bowie, beginning with the extraordinary story of how Garson went overnight from playing in tiny jazz clubs to touring the world on arena rock tours with Bowie after one short phone call and audition. A noted master of jazz, classical, and other genres, Garson has composed thousands of original works and has taught countless students, acting as mentor to many. Bowies Piano Man explores his roots and childhood in Brooklyn, his ongoing strong presence in the jazz world, and his collaborations with a huge range of other artists in addition to Bowie. Touring and recording with the Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails are given in-depth attention, as is his approach to teaching and creating music. Explored in detail in particular is his commitment to improvisation as a form of composition, a manifestation of his more general dedication to living in the moment and always moving forward a trait he shared with Bowie. This is without a doubt one of the best biographies I have EVER read. This is more than a biography. It is almost like a tutorial for anyone out there who is serious about being a musician and what it takes to be an accomplished one. As one of the other reviewers noted, Mike is best known as David Bowies Piano Man but he is so much more musically. as well as in attitude and spirit. One of the reasons, as noted in the book, Garson brought such an interesting dynamic to Bowies music on stage and in the studio with his encyclopedic knowledge and ability to adapt jazz and classical flavor to Davids performances. And I believe thats why Bowie always went back to Mike in recording and performance situations. But again, the bio is so much more. From his earliest performances in the NYC jazz scene, to Mick Ronson, to Nine Inch Nails, to Smashing Pumpkins and beyond, Mike has given every project he has touched a spiritual and sensitive performance that could never have been accomplished by other keyboardists. And the renowned people he has trained and performed with in virtually every genre of music imaginable, is a Whos Who of the greats in jazz and rock and now music. And as a musician of many years, the book has awakened in me a attitudes and desire to perform and compose on a higher level: both as an adequate keyboardist/guitarist and composer. I dont want to come-off as a Garson groupie here, but after reading this book I even ordered the Master Class series of his tutorials. And, by the way, if I had studied piano under him, I would have been a better musician much sooner. Thats how good his teaching skills are. BUT DONT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE EXPERTISE AND TALENT NOTED THROUGHOUT THIS BOOK. This book is for anyone who wants to play, record or compose music at virtually every level and as the book notes, though he is a prodigy on his instrument, he is also a humble man who believes that every one who truly wants to play music and is willing to take the time to practice and understand the nuances of every music genre, can and will succeed. AND BE AWARE, this is not some tell-all book with sordid tales of sex, drugs and rock and roll, but a genuine look into the life of a man who cares about the music more than the excesses of the music business. Well done Clifford Slapper. CZECH (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This project opens space for looking at the world in a musical way where “jamming” with music through playing and listening to it helps one resist a more standardized and dualistic way of seeing the world. Instead of having a traditional dissertation, this project is organized like a record album where each chapter is a Track that contains an original song that parallels and plays off the subject matter being discussed to make a more encompassing, multidimensional, holistic, improvisational, and critical statement as the songs and riffs move along together to tell why an arts-based musical way of being can be a choice and alternative in our lives.

Likewise, Lemmy seemed too much a part of rock’s scenery to leave us so soon. As we went to press with this issue, we also learned the sad news that Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had passed (look out for a full tribute next month), making this winter the worst in memory for losing legends. The only very slight consolation for all this is that it prompted us to listen again to the music that made them household names. In the case of Bowie, it was a reminder of the astonishing breadth and ambition of his music-making (see cover feature, p76). Rightly regarded as classic now, Bowie’s music must have been sensational when he was starting out – and I’m sure not everyone ‘got it’ at the time. Passing years have a habit of making the new and strange in music feel comfortably familiar, and finally classic. That thought has been a reminder of the importance of seeking out uncommon sounds, and not just sticking to your comfort zone of old favourites.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology by Tiffany Naiman 2017 © Copyright by Tiffany Naiman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Singing at Death’s Door: Late Style, Disability, and the Temporality of Illness in Popular Music by Tiffany Naiman Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robert W. Fink, Co-Chair Professor Raymond L. Knapp, Co-Chair This dissertation investigates musical expressions of temporal alterities in works created by popular music artists, identifying their aesthetic responses as their bodies become ill, disabled, and they become more aware of mortality. I propose a critical, hermeneutic, and theoretical method drawn from Edward Said’s appropriation of Adorno’s expression “late style” that I have designated ill style, a form of creativity within a temporality of illness. Late style is discernable in works produced, paradigmatically, at the end of one’s career in “old age,” but late style may also be understood as an influence on artistic output at any stage of life if the subject is experiencing untimeliness and a disruption in access to the communal understanding of futurity and time, a possible consequence of factors other than age. I contend that late style, accelerated by illness, disrupts Western cultural attempts at ignoring precarious and finite nature of existence; the resulting expressions of lateness ask audiences to do the same. I offer a way in which to think more critically about what scholars consider late style, how it functions in popular ii music studies and society, and how it intersects with the fields of disability, gender, queer, and critical race studies, and the social sciences.
