To inform the Marketing and Events Committee of the events conducted within the City of Melbourne between 1 November 2006 and 28 February 2007. Recommendation from Management 2. That the Marketing and Events Committee accepts the Events Report – 1 November 2006 to 28 February 2007. Comments 3. The events outlined in this report relate to those coordinated through the Events Melbourne Branch of the City of Melbourne. A small number of arts events are coordinated through the Arts & Culture Branch and are not within the scope of this report. Water Restrictions and Events 4. The City of Melbourne has initiated a number of proactive strategies to significantly reduce the water consumption and water usage during events as a result of the current state-wide water restrictions. 5. These strategies involve utilising alternative or modified water-filled traffic management treatments; minimising water usage during vending, food preparation and drinking water fountains; using concrete/sand-filled weights instead of water-filled weights in infrastructure weighting; and utilising Class A recycled water for portable toilet flushing rather than drinking water. 6. As a result of these strategies being implemented, recent events have significantly reduced the level of water usage during events, for example New Year’s Eve 2006 utilised 250,000 litres less water and Moomba Waterfest utilised 300,000 litres less water than in previous years. -

LC EIC Inquiry into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism and events sectors Submission 074 Inquiry into the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Tourism and Events Sectors Mr Duane Swan Organisation Name: Your position or role: YOUR SUBMISSION Submission: Covid has clearly devastated events and tourism across Victoria and Australia, and the effects have been felt across the board, most acutely felt by those who make their livelihood solely from events. Having worked from the bottom up in events and hospitality over 20 years, the number of direct and ancillary workers, contractors, businesses and suppliers that are involved in running an event is enormous, and the effects from current restrictions and limitations are unsustainable for most. From all those that work at Harry the Hirer or Frontier Touring to all the sole traders and family businesses dotted around the state, without any direct and targeted solutions from the government immediately, the events and tourism industries will be damaged beyond repair, along with the livelihoods of those that create it. We do need action immediately, though in no way do I suggest the actions up till now have not been greatly appreciated and beneficial in getting Victoria into a position to be open again for events and tourism. With the current movement on vaccines and the lifting of more restrictions being positive, the next 6 months for events will be crucial for survival and then recovery. Additionally, with the lack of international travel for the foreseeable future it is imperative that we protect the events and tourism industry during this next stage. -

OBITUARY: ADRIAN RAWLINS 1939-2001 by Peter J F Newton _______________________________________________________________________ [Note: This obituary appeared in the Apr/May, 2002 edition of JazzChord. Other versions were published in Sydney Jazz Club’s Quarterly Rag, #101, October-December 2001 and New South Wales Jazz Archive Newsletter, 4 (1), 2002.] drian Rawlins was born in Melbourne on November 13, 1939. He died in Melbourne on September 12, 2001, as a result of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Although I became A aware of Adrian Rawlins’ work and reputation quite soon after arriving in Australia in 1960, and we had met a few times in later years, it was not until the late ‘90s that I really got to know him well. You could even say we became mates, a term that I use very sparingly. We actually caught up with each other on a gray Melbourne day in Roger Beilby’s Mainly Jazz record shop at St Kilda. We subsequently went to lunch and, each of us having a deep interest in the poetry and jazz movements of the late ‘50s discussed several potential collaborative writing projects on that topic. With his help and permission, I re-edited his fine essay on jazz and poetry in Melbourne in the ‘60s, which had appeared some years before in the Victorian Jazz Club’s Jazzline, and published it in my own WordJazz Down Under. The sculpture of Adrian Rawlins on the corner of Argyle and Brunswick Streets in Fitzroy, Melbourne: commissioned in 1994 in honour of Adrian’s contribution to community life…PHOTO COURTESY JUDY NEWTON Even his enemies (and he certainly had some) acknowledged that Adrian was a very talented man.
