Jeanne Moreau, who founded the Ateliers with Claude-Eric Poiroux, will be running them, as she has done every year, along with cinema professionals, including directors Olivier Ducastel (Jeanne et le garçon formidable, L’Arbre et la forêt…), Raphaël Nadjari (The Shade, Avanim…), Olivier Assayas (Clean, L’Heure d’été…)… Created in 2005, the Angers Workshops are directed toward young European filmmakers with one or two short films to their credit and a first feature film in the works. -

The Anti-Orpheus: Queering Myth in Ducastel et Martineau’s Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau (Paris 05:59) Abstract Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau’s 2016 film Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau (Paris 05:59: Théo & Hugo) concludes on an Orphic note, inviting a consideration of the entire film as based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The film appropriates but also radically transforms elements of the foundational myth—including especially Orpheus’s turn to pederasty in Ovid’s Latin version—crafting a queer love story based on potentiality out of the tragedy of the heterosexual love story. -

In turn, they tell each other memories that bind them to this man and enter the room to confront him. But what happens there between the monster and them remains their secret. From Paternal Hegemony to the Ethics of Fraternity:: the Place of Absent Fathers in Le Jeune Cinéma Français ByB Eun-Jee Park Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) School of Modern Languages Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Newcastle University NE1 7RU United Kingdom February 2011 1 Abstract In the 1990s a new generation of socially engaged filmmakers came to be known as le jeune cinéma français. Many of these filmmakers examined a whole range of social issues, with a particular aim of focusing on the representation of the French family. In these family portraits, the father, both as the traditional head of the family institution and as a stand-in for the State, is notably missing. This thesis inquires into the paternal absence in le jeune cinéma, and traces how the paternal crisis is related to the filmmakers’ practice of auteur cinema. The jeunes auteurs, rather than participating directly in political debate, make a case for cinema as a tool for an ethical engagement with the reality of those left behind by socio-economic change. Drawing on philosophical thinking developed by Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida, this thesis discusses the ways le jeune cinéma seeks to move away from the oedipal association of the father with the law, and thereby to articulate the recognition of an ethical fraternity as opening up to the care and hospitality towards the Other. This thesis outlines specific ideals of new paternal models that le jeune cinéma proposes. Starting with an Introduction which develops the points made above and sets out the theoretical framework, this study then moves on to consider six emblematic films which alter the way the father is conceived through diverse paternal reconfigurations. -

Jeanne Moreau, the founder of the Ateliers with Claude-Éric Poiroux, is in charge of the artistic direction. The director Olivier Ducastel (Jeanne et le Garçon formidable…) will run the workshops, accompanied by professionals from the world of film, including Lionel Baier (Un autre homme, Jury member at the Premiers Plans Festival 2013), François Pirot (a resident at the Angers Workshops 2008 with his screenplay Mobile Home), Fabio Grassadonia & Antonio Piazza (residents at the Angers Workshops 2010 and winners of Cannes Critics' Week for Salvo), screenwriter Razvan Radulescu (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu), Justine Triet (La Bataille de Solférino), Emmanuel Chaumet, producer.
