It is a release of the shame assumed in trying to fit to that special-whiteness, in performance to the respectability gaze that has us tapping to a rhythm that is not our own. THE DEATH OF PUNK: REINCARNATION OF A DEAD GENRE Leila El Bashir Serious listeners of music often talk about their favorite songs and bands in terms of their favorite genres, however, most listeners do not have a clear conception of what it means for a piece of music to be categorized in a specific genre. Genre is a form of classification that most people correlate strictly with musical style, that is, the way a song sounds. People do not realize that genres today are becoming more like artificial categories defined by the music industry and popular culture to commodify and commercialize music. This popular culture can be summed up to what Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, in The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception, terms the culture industry. They suggest that culture and its products, such as music, are being commodified and that culture as a common denominator already contains in its embryo that schematisation and process of cataloguing and classification which bring culture within the sphere of administration (7). In this way, genres can be viewed as a branch of the culture industry, being a form of classification that can be managed by culture administration. Therefore, one can see how culture and genre interact. Furthermore, David Brackett in his article, Musical meaning: genres, categories, and crossover, suggests how genres are more than musical style: Genres bring with them connotations about music and identity which may encode specific affective qualities such as conformity, rebelliousness, commercialism, selling out, art for arts sake; and may encode a whole variety of social characteristics (66).

John Malin “Leave No Doubt” Scholarship A native of Chicago, Illinois, John Malin moved to Wisconsin where he attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to earn his teaching degree. John began teaching at Kimberly High School where he specialized in health, physical education, CPR, and sports medicine for the next 40 years. John (Coach Malin) was the man responsible for keeping Kimberly athletics competitive. Before schools had professional trainers, Coach Malin spent many countless hours rehabbing student athletes. He was also involved with coaching softball, powerlifting and he thoroughly enjoyed being the voice of the Kimberly Football Family for over 30 years. John led by example, giving 100% in everything he did and expected the same from others. John’s hobbies included cutting wood, lifting weights, fishing and hunting. John’s love of the outdoors was most enjoyed on his 30 acres in Iola. This scholarship was established in John’s memory by his family and friends to benefit a student who is making a difference in another person’s life. Eligibility: Graduating seniors from Kimberly High School who plan to attend an accredited college, university, or technical school. Nominations from teaching and coaching staff will be based on the following student characteristics: • Serves others • Displays courage and perseverance in overcoming obstacles and dealing with adversity • Possesses a love that shines humbly and makes the work a better place Award Amount: One $1,000 non-renewable scholarship award, payable after successful completion of the first semester of post-secondary schooling. Little did they realize that Cyndi was not some waif-like innocent, unfamiliar with the big, bad world of the music business. Instead, through her determination to make sure her personality and creativity came through in the music, “She’s So Unusual” (released October 1983), would result in four U.S. top ten singles (and a fifth that made the top forty), multiple awards from the recording and video industries, and ultimately produce a legacy of material that has been remixed, reinvented, and interpreted by many fellow artists over the years. Born June 22, 1953 in Brooklyn, Cyndi had already been a professional singer for nearly ten years before beginning work on “She’s So Unusual,” and was quite wise to the inevitable ups and downs that come with making it in the music business. Cyndi’s early years in cover bands meant only long hours with little creative output, and eventually having to spend a long year with a voice coach to regain her four-octave vocal range after damaging her vocal cords by using improper voice technique.

Fortunately, it was replaced by not one but two “Mutant Fest” type of events: Cincinnati, OH in August (hosted by Dave Spodie of The Connie Dungs) and Columbus, OH in October (hosted by Eddie of The Proms). The bottom line is this: if you wanna have pop-punk events to attend this summer, people need to Do It Yourself. Get out there and independently organize your own Mutant Fest-type of deal! It would seem that there would be enough people and bands in the NY/NJ/PA area and possibly also in the Pacific Northwest—in addition to room for shows in the heartland of the pop-punk world, the midwest.
