Palavras-chave capa de disco; rock; mídia; texto cultural; objeto de memória Abstract 7070 Universidade Metodista de São Paulo – UMESP, Brasil [email protected] In this article, I intend to reflect on three aspects that characterize album covers, especially those of British and Brazilian rock between the late 1960s and early 1970s: as media – in their images and representations and in the materiality of the object itself; as a cultural text – which articulates semiotic dimensions at various levels; and as object of memory – by translating elements from the past into the present and their respective communicational processes. Through such aspects, I 637 seek to understand this packaging, whose basic function is the mediation between artist, his music, the label and the listener, always crossed by the brands of consumption. -
Thinking on 4:44 [DWR, 7.7.17]
Thinking on 4:44 [DWR, 7.7.17] There is little room for debate in pointing to JAY Z ’s new album as important. The tight, ten-track release – with a bonus three cuts on CD and vinyl – presents as watershed because of popular attending to the vulnerability put center, and because of JAY Z’s deep Black identities that anchor the long play. Bluntly, mainstream isn’t used to the complexity of adult men of color outlining mistakes, assuming responsibility, and maintaining fidelity to their Culture in ways that remain unapologetic while also apologizing to those they’ve hurt. This humanness is publicly relegated to a special-whiteness. So then, when a Black man occupies this human touch he becomes a novelty, ironically objectified with his break from typical objectification and reduction to stereotype. No doubt, JAY is a special one. He is a master artist, a clever businessman and has effectively worked the angles to become iconic without being a clown. The strength of 4:44 is not in the trappings, rather it’s in the letting go. The sub-sixty- minute narrative wins as a statement of psychological balance. It is a release of the shame assumed in trying to fit to that special-whiteness, in performance to the respectability gaze that has us tapping to a rhythm that is not our own. Producer No I.D. pivots from Nina Simone to Donny Hathaway to Stevie Wonder and other thick soul samples as a blueprint for freedom fighting, allowing JAY Z the space to take deep breaths and to be. -

Abstract There is a dark mythology surrounding the post-punk band Joy Division that tends to foreground the personal history of lead singer Ian Curtis. However, when evaluating the construction of Joy Division’s public image, the contributions of several other important figures must be addressed. This thesis shifts focus onto the peripheral figures who played key roles in the construction and perpetuation of Joy Division’s image. The roles of graphic designer Peter Saville, of television presenter and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, and of photographers Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn will stand as examples in this discussion of cultural intermediaries and collaborators in popular music. -

The sound was loud and bouncing off the wooden walls in the Weymouth Massachusetts High School gymnasium. A new sound of guitars, drums, pumping bass and vocals bred energy for all the teenagers anxious to dance, to a sound created by "Rock and Roll" The DJ replayed "Party Doll" by Buddy Knox five times in three hours! He also played "Poor Butterfly" by Charlie Gracie, "Roll Over Beethoven" by Chuck Berry, "Eddie My Love" by The Teen Queens and "I'm Sticking With You" by Jimmy Bowen. Lennie had heard all these songs on Boston radio, but this environment added another dimension of excitement. One that left him longing to create that environment for himself and become a bigger part of it. It was this experience that lead to experimenting with the formation of bands.
