Targeted Living Shoreline Management Planning for Virginia State Parks in Chesapeake Bay Summary Report November 2018 Targeted Living Shoreline Management Planning for Virginia State Parks in Chesapeake Bay Summary Report Donna A. Milligan C. Scott Hardaway, Jr. Christine A. Wilcox Shoreline Studies Program Virginia Institute of Marine Science William & Mary This project was funded by the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program at the Department of Environmental Quality through Grant # NA17NOS4190152 Task 92.02 of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended. The views expressed herein are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA, or any of its subagencies. November 2018 Page | 1 1 Introduction The Commonwealth of Virginia owns numerous tidal, waterfront properties along Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries including state parks, natural area preserves, and wildlife management areas. Many of these parks have eroding shorelines and are at risk from coastal hazards such as tidal flooding, waves, and sea level rise. These environmental threats impact the safety of park visitors and the mission of the parks. In an effort to address these issues for the parks as well as provide education to the public on living shoreline management strategies, eleven state parks with tidal shoreline along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries were selected because of their suitablility for living shoreline demonstration projects (Figure 1). These parks: Belle Isle, Caledon, Chippokes, First Landing, Kiptopeke, Leesylvania, Mason Neck, Middle Peninsula, Westmoreland, Widewater, and York River, are spread throughout the Chesapeake Bay and have a variety of coastal conditions due to their locations and underlying geology.

  • First Battle of Bull Run-Manassas
Name: edHelper First Battle of Bull Run-Manassas The thought that the American Civil War would last four long years never entered the minds of most of the people. It was assumed by people on both sides that each side would win quickly. It is interesting to note that many of the battles during the war had two names. The North would name them after the nearest body of water-- in this case, a stream called Bull Run. (Run is an early English word that means a stream or creek.) The South named them after the nearest town, such as Manassas. The new capital for the Confederacy (Richmond, Virginia) was only 100 miles away from the Union capital (Washington, D.C.). When this great battle came, it was certain to take place between the two cities because of their proximity. In preparation for an assault, the Union soldiers began fortifying areas around the capital and the nearby towns of Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia. Confederate forces made no immediate effort to attack Washington as the Union expected them to do. Instead, General Beauregard gathered his army at Manassas Junction where there was a railway. Union forces were commanded by General Winfield Scott, but he was too old and infirm to lead the men on the field. That job fell to General Irwin McDowell. While many men had flocked to the Union banner, few had any training as soldiers. He wanted time to train the men for battle, but Congress wanted him to confront the Confederates. The two forces met near the creek called Bull Run on July 21, 1861.

  • X-World/5 Re-Releases Futuristic Heavy Metal Album 'New Universal
2015-04-02 09:26 CEST X-World/5 Re-Releases Futuristic Heavy Metal Album ‘New Universal Order’ - The project includes members from Hammerfall, King Diamond And The Cure. Los Angeles, CA, April 2nd, 2015 – The metal super group X-World/5 is re- releasing the album “New Universal Order” on April 7th. The band is a collaboration between Magnus Rosen, Big Swede, Andy LaRocque, Reeves Gabrels & Nils K. Rue.The album was first released in 2008 but will now be available again. The members are based in USA, England, Sweden and Norway. “When me and Magnus first talked about doing a project we wanted to have friends from different parts of the world involved. It turned out to be a pretty interesting line-up,” says Big Swede. The concept for the project was trying to do something new, interesting and futuristic, mixing metal, electronic sounds and powerful vocals, sometimes distorted. “How would a metal band sound 1000 years from now? That’s the question which started it all when me and Big Swede were discussing ideas for the project,” continues Magnus Rosen. “I had Reeves Gabrels in my studio in LA while Andy and Magnus were doing stuff at Andy’s place outside of Gothenburg. Nils did his parts in Norway. Then me and Andy mixed half of the songs each in our own studios. It was a very easy process and because we were located in different parts of the world, it was impossible to get tired of each other and no fighting occurred,” laughs Big Swede. Members: Magnus Rosen (Hammerfall) Big Swede (Refurbished, John Christ) Reeves Gabrels (The Cure) Andy LaRocque (King Diamond) Nils K.
