Part 2 of Selected Discography Milt Hinton Solos Compiled by Ed Berger (1949-2017) - Librarian, journalist, music producer, photographer, historian, and former Associate Director, Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University. This is a chronological list of representative solos by Hinton as a sideman in a variety of settings throughout his career. Although not definitive, Milt was such a consistent soloist that one could cite many other equally accomplished performances. In some cases, particularly from the 1930s when bass solos were relatively rare, the recordings listed contain prominent bass accompaniment. Jazz: where "lives" is both noun and verb JAZZ WORTH READING: “THE BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES: FACES, PLACES AND NIGHTLIFE 1937-1962″ Posted on February 20, 2014 Some of my readers will already know about Richard Vacca’s superb book, published in 2012 by Troy Street Publishing. I first encountered his work in Tom Hustad’s splendid book on Ruby Braff, BORN TO PLAY. Vacca’s book is even better than I could have expected. Much of the literature about jazz, although not all, retells known stories, often with an ideological slant or a “new” interpretation. Thus it’s often difficult to find a book that presents new information in a balanced way. BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES is a model of what can be done. And you don’t have to be particularly interested in Boston, or, for that matter, jazz, to admire its many virtues. Vacca writes that the book grew out of his early idea of a walking tour of Boston jazz spots, but as he found out that this landscape had been obliterated (as has happened in New York City), he decided to write a history of the scene, choosing starting and ending points that made the book manageable. The book has much to offer several different audiences: a jazz- lover who wants to know the Boston history / anecdotal biography / reportage / topography of those years; someone with local pride in the recent past of his home city; someone who wishes to trace the paths of his favorite — and some obscure — jazz heroes and heroines. -

This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”. -

He was also a serious jazz enthusiast and collector. Tolley has graciously bequeathed his entire collection of jazz records to Carleton University for faculty and students to appreciate and enjoy. The recordings represent 75 years of collecting, spanning the earliest jazz recordings to albums released in the 1970s. Born in Birmingham, England in 1927, his love for jazz began at the age of fourteen and from the age of seventeen he was publishing in many leading periodicals on the subject, such as Discography, Pickup, Jazz Monthly, The IAJRC Journal and Canada’s popular jazz magazine Coda. As well as having written various books on British poetry, he has also written two books on jazz: Discographical Essays (2009) and Codas: To a Life with Jazz (2013). Tolley was also president of the Montreal Vintage Music Society which also included Jacques Emond, whose vinyl collection is also housed in the Audio-Visual Resource Centre. -

What LETTERS actually happened was that Jack Tracy, then editor of Down Beat, decided the magazine needed some humor and cre• ated Out of My Head by George Crater, which he wrote himself. After several issues, he welcomed contributions from the staff, and Don Gold and I began. to contribute regularly. After Jack left, I inherited Crater's column and wrote it, with occasional contributions from Don and Jack Tynan, until I found that the well was running dry. Don and I wrote it some more and then Crater sort of passed from the scene, much like last year's favorite soloist. One other thing: I think Bill Crow will be delighted to learn that the picture of Billie Holiday he so admired on the cover of the Decca Billie Holiday memo• rial album was taken by Tony Scott. Dom Cerulli New York City PRAISE FAMOUS MEN Orville K. "Bud" Jacobson died in West Palm Beach, Florida on April 12, 1960 of a heart attack. He had been there for his heart since 1956. It was Bud who gave Frank Teschemacher his first clarinet lessons, weaning him away from violin. He was directly responsible for the Okeh recording date of Louis' Hot 5. -

STANLEY FRANK DANCE (K25-28) He was born on 15 September 1910 in Braintree, Essex. Records were apparently plentiful at Framlingham, so during his time there he was fortunate that the children of local record executives were also in attendance. This gave him the opportunity to hear almost anything that was at hand. By the time he left Framlingham, he and some friends were avid record collectors, going so far as to import titles from the United States that were unavailable in England. By the time of his death, he had been writing about jazz longer than anyone had. He had served as book editor of JazzTimes from 1980 until December 1998, and was still contributing book and record reviews to that publication. At the time of his death he was also still listed as a contributor to Jazz Journal International , where his column "Lightly And Politely" was a feature for many years. He also wrote for The New York Herald- Tribune, The Saturday Review Of Literature and Music Journal, among many other publications. He wrote a number of books : The Jazz Era (1961); The World of Duke Ellington (1970); The Night People with Dicky Wells (1971); The World of Swing (1974); The World of Earl Hines (1977); Duke Ellington in Person: An Intimate Memoir with Mercer Ellington (1978); The World of Count Basie (1980); and Those Swinging Years with Charlie Barnet (1984). When John Hammond began writing for The Gramophone in 1931 he turned everything upside down and Stanley began corresponding with Hammond and they met for the first time during Hammond's trip to England in 1935. -

THE TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH OF LESTER YOUNG By RON TABOR still at (or close to) the height of his creative powers, and much like Billie Holiday, Young suffered an extended period “I STAY BY MYSELF. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING of physical, psychological, and most believe, artistic decline, ABOUT ME?”1 which was visible to all but the most obtuse observers. Young’s death, in other words, can almost be described as protracted and public. To anyone more than a little familiar with the life of Lester Young, the great African American jazz tenor saxophonist, the What is usually accounted for as the cause of Young’s deterio- title of my essay must seem ironic.
