STAFF Bishop: Rev. Grant Hagiya District Superintendent: Rev. James R. Powell Pastor: Rev. Gilbert Stones Lay Leader: Beth Crizer Dir. of Discipleship Ministries: Jeff Manildi Office Administrator: MaryAnn Jakes Music Director/Organist: Barbara Hoff Trinity Ringers Director: Rev. Richard Bolin VCC Director: Bonnie Luther From the Pastor… To the Saints that are in Los Osos, For almost forty years I’ve written an Easter pastor’s column for March or April, whichever month it fell in. I hope you have all received the Easter letter that I sent out. I decided that since I wrote that Easter message, that I would use this column in a different way. On April 22 we will have the honor of being led by our Bishop, Grant Hagiya, in celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of our chartering. We’ll also be celebrating with a prepared meal. I want to encourage everyone to join the Bishop in worship on the 22nd, and also to join us for lunch. I want to share some Methodist history both local and general. (There is a point to this if you can make it to the end). In December 1957 the first organizational meeting was held. The church was chartered less than five months later in April 1958 – a speed with which things rarely happened today. (Chartering means that a gathered congregation officially becomes a Methodist church and receives an appointment from the Bishop). In our sixty years we have been a member congregation of two denominations. We were chartered as a “Methodist Church,” and became “United Methodist,” in 1968 when The Methodist Church united with the “Evangelical United Brethren Church.” In that time we’ve also been part of three different : we were chartered in the Southern California-Arizona Annual Conference of The Methodist Church, which became the Southern California-Arizona Annual Conference United Methodist Church with the merger in 1968 We’ve also been part of two Districts – the Santa Barbara District, and now the North District which is an expanded version of the old Santa Barbara District that includes some churches that were previously in other districts. In our sixty years Trinity has benefited from the talents of a variety of children’s ministry, youth ministry, and other program leaders. In that time Trinity has been served by fifteen senior pastors and three associate pastors under appointment by twelve different District Superintendents and seven different Bishops: Bishop Gerald Kennedy: 1952 – 1972; Bishop Charles Golden: 1972 – 1980; Bishop Jack Tuell: 1980 – 1992; Bishop Roy Sano: 1992 – 2000; Bishop : 2000 – 2012; Bishop Minerva Carcaño: 2012 – 2016; and Bishop Grant Hagiya: 2016 – present. Our English word ‘bishop,’ comes from the Greek word ‘episcopos,” which means ‘overseer.” In the early church the bishop’s primary job was to celebrate the eucharist, (Lord’s Supper) and oversee the catechism of new believers. Over the years the office of bishop grew into a temporal as well spiritual leader until by the High Middle Ages bishops were men of great power and influence, and often poor spiritual leaders. began in the 1730’s in England under the leadership of Anglican priest . It was a time of change and many English Methodists found themselves immigrating to America. They continued to meet and wrote requesting Wesley to help them organize a church. John Wesley designated two Methodist leaders, and , as General Superintendents to assist the new church. To be brief, Asbury decided that he preferred the term ‘bishop,’ and most of the various different churches that trace their beginning to that event continue to have bishops to this day. A Catholic Bishop has immense power and authority. United Methodist Bishops have much less direct power. They do have the power of appointment which means that they have the final say on which pastor will serve which ministry. Beyond the (very great) power of appointment, their role is limited. Unlike a Catholic Bishop, a UM Bishop can not speak on behalf of the Church. They can not even determine what or how a pastor may preach – although they do determine where a pastor may do that preaching. Bishops preside over the meetings of Annual, Jurisdictional and General Conferences. UM Bishops remain very important. In the crisis of our General Conference of 2016 where there was real possibility of a schism in the United Methodist Church the bishops established “The Commission on a Way Forward” which will present a plan for how the church may remain united… or how it will splinter if it cannot remain together. Our own bishop, Grant Hagiya is one of the 32 lay and clergy members of that commission. He is involved in important work that will affect the church for a generation or more. I invite us to be in prayer for him, the rest of the commission and the Council of Bishops as they try to craft a plan that will truly move us forward as the Kingdom of God.

ADULT ENRICHMENT CLASS Sunday mornings at 11:30 Classes are held Sunday mornings immediately following the worship service. Classes typically run 3-6 weeks and feature different topics and leaders.

Beginning Sunday, April 8 In this class we’ll get an overview of creation spirituality as it has been developed over the last 50 years especially by Rev. Matthew Fox. Have you heard of the “Coming of the Cosmic Christ?” Have you felt stirrings of “The Order of the Sacred Earth?” Or perhaps, even, have you seen glimpses of “The Hidden Spirituality of Men”? Those are the titles of three of Matthew Fox’s books that we’ll explore in brief...blended with video cuts, discussion, and leadership from Rev. Mike Eggleston.

Sunday, June 10th – Do you want to know more about Trinity? Have you ever wondered, “What is a Methodist, anyway?” Maybe you are interested in becoming a member of Trinity UMC. If any of these questions sound familiar, come to an inquirer’s class after service Sunday, June 10th.

Mondays & Thursdays 6:30pm

The Monday night group begins March 26th at the Manildi home. The discussion for Season 2 will be a look at Leadership in 1 Samuel. We’ll look at some of the leadership archetypes put forth in selected passages and discuss some modern-day equivalents. For questions regarding anything, including driving directions, email Jeff Manildi at [email protected].

The Thursday night group begins on April 5th the Murta/Eggleston home. This season we will dig into the New Testament book of Galatians. Galatians is one of our earliest writings of the early Christians, predating the four gospels or Revelation or Romans or any of the “hidden writings” or even any shreds of first century texts that archaeologists might dig up. But Galatians is not Paul playing nice. “Paul’s angry, passionate letter. . .” is the first four words of the NIB commentary on Galatians. Yet Galatians has long been one of the most influential books of the New Testament. For questions regarding anything, including driving directions, email Mike Eggleston at [email protected].

Music Notes For many years, our choir has looked forward to the first Sunday of May, the traditional date for our Cluster Choir Festival. United Methodist choirs from Lompoc to Atascadero join together for an afternoon of choral music. Each choir sings a favorite anthem, then all join in singing selections chosen by the host choir. This year's festival, hosted by the Arroyo Grande UMC, will take place on Sunday, May 6, at 4 PM. This is an uplifting and joyous event, and all are invited.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

United Methodist News:

As mentioned in last month’s Trinity View, the history of Trinity’s unit of United Methodist Women has been closely affiliated with the church’s history. In the next few months, a short paragraph will be written about UMW and its support of the church. First, to put UMW’s place in context, The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church states “In every local church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women.” As early as 1959, there was a WSCS (the former name of UMW) at the Baywood Park Methodist Church as indicated by publicity for an upcoming church-wide bazaar where “twelve booths will be gaily decorated in front of the building…items will be sold by members of Methodist Men, WSCS and Methodist Youth Fellowship”. In following years, WSCS’s work included numerous fundraisers—bazaars, rummage sales, lunches, dinners, and so on, much of it to help the new church. In 1962, one newspaper article events at the church announced that the proceeds from a WSCS upcoming bake sale were to be used for painting and landscaping. The same article stated “Mrs Jene Munson (our own Marcia) reported on the vent needed in the kitchen and requested more time.” In 1965, the unit’s president announced that WSCE raised $1,344.36 through rummage sales, musicals, bazaar and bake sales…. members donated $995 to the church, $113 to missionary work, and $55 to equip the church’s kitchen.

Congregation News

In our continuing efforts to keep Trinity UMC “green”, your Church Council recently agreed that we would no longer purchase single-use coffee cups or plastic dining utensils, none of which are recyclable. Council members agreed that the small amount of sterilized water used in the church dishwasher is a greener trade-off. We will use whatever disposable coffee cups and plastic utensils are on hand, but won’t purchase more, and will ask all users of our facility not to leave such items. (Currently they just “appear”).

Great things are happening at Village in April….

Spring break comes right after Easter, April 2-6. During this week there will be a few changes happening to the playground. Pavers will be installed to cover the dirt area in the small play area. This change will provide a bigger area for the smallest ones to ride their trikes and cars. The base of the tree in the large play area will be covered by a deck to protect the roots of the tree and to provide an area for the children to sit and read.

April also begins open enrollment for new and existing students. Priority is given to existing students and siblings for the coming Summer and Fall programs. For more information about enrollment, please contact Bonnie at 805-528-1671.
