    During the 1930-60's, Hollywood directors were told to "put the light where the money is" and this often meant spectacular costumes. Stuidos hired the biggest designers and fashion icons to bring to life the glitz and the glamour that moviegoers expected. Edith Head, Adrian, Walter Plunkett, Irene and Helen Rose were just a few that became household names because of their designs. In many cases, their creations were just as important as the plot of the movie itself. Few costumes from the "Golden Era" of Hollywood remain except for a small number tha have been meticulously preserved by a handful of collectors. Greg Schreiner is one of the most well-known. His wonderful Hollywood fiolm costume collection houses over 175 such masterpieces. Greg shares his collection in the show Hollywoood Revisited. Filled with music, memories and fun, the revue allows the audience to genuinely feel as if they were revisiting the days that made Hollywood a dream factory. The program, scheduled through August 26, will also include such film classics as Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc;" Pudovkin's "Mother;" Erich von Stroheim's "Greed;" F.W. Murnau's "The Last Laugh;" Eisenstein's "Potemkin;" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," one of the most controversial films of its time. Thirty-seven pictures were selected by Beaumont Newhall, Director of the George Eastman House, who is responsible for organizing the current photographic exhibition, "Photo Eye of the 20s," to which "Kino Eye of the 20s" is a companion program. Mr. Newhall will appear at the Thursday evening performance, July 30 at 8 p.m., fjhen he will introduce the Murnau film "Sunrise" and discuss the series. A strong kinship between photography and film existed in this decade, when the film found its syntax and structure, according to Mr. NeT;hall. Very few individuals or organisations within the domain of popular culture itself sought actively to defeat or destroy high culture, least of all on behalf of the claims of the popular. If they took any notice, it was usually quite respectful, not to say reverential, as a viewing of almost any big-screen Shakespeare would instantly reveal. Militancy was confined to those who thought it necessary to struggle against popular culture on behalf of high or minority culture. These struggles began as an imperial discourse on the governability or oth- erwise of the masses in Britain. The 1860s to 1880s was a period of: G political agitation. The second Reform Act of 1867 extended the franchise to virtually all mature men; G educational reform. The Education Acts of 1870–81 established free, com- pulsory, elementary schooling; G imperial ascendancy (not to mention Fenian outrages). The British Empire had painted the world map red, bringing under the governance of the British crown ever more disparate, unruly and resistant subjects from all inhabited continents; G commercial and scientific materialism.

It represents the three subsystems that made up the classic studio system: the star system, the system of genre films, and the factory system of production. It is one of the premier genres that derived from that transition to sound: the film musical. It also documents a picture of the film industry that includes the audience as well as people behind the screen. The film shows us that exhibition as well as production is an important part of the film industry. Singin’ in the Rain illustrates the qualities of the classical Hollywood narrative: the moral nature of the characters, the dramatization of their conflicts, the organization of plot events, and the resolution of the story are all typical of classical Hollywood films. For all these reasons, it serves as a fitting culmination to this course; it is a reflexive film that allows us to meditate on Hollywood, cinema in general, and the particular films and concepts we have studied throughout this semester.

    RFC’s Library’s Book Guide 2017 Since the beginning of our journey at the Royal Film Commission – Jordan (RFC), we have been keen to provide everything that promotes cinema culture in Jordan; hence, the Film Library was established at the RFC’s Film House in Jabal Amman. The Film Library offers access to a wide and valuable variety of Jordanian, Arab and International movies: the “must see” movies for any cinephile. There are some 2000 titles available from 59 countries. In addition, the Film Library has 2500 books related to various aspects of the audiovisual field. These books tackle artistic, technical, theoretical and historical aspects of cinema and filmmaking. The collec- tion of books is bilingual (English and Arabic). Visitors can watch movies using the private viewing stations available and read books or consult periodi- cals in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Library members are, in addition, allowed to borrow films and/or books. Membership fees: 20 JOD per year; 10 JOD for students. Working hours: The Film Library is open on weekdays from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM. From 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturdays. It is closed on Fridays.
