NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release Office of the Premier 2020PREM0102-001966 Nov NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Office of the Premier 2020PREM0102-001966 Nov. 26, 2020 New cabinet focuses on keeping people safe, fighting COVID-19 Updated on Nov. 26, 2020 VICTORIA ʹPremier John Horgan has announced a new cabinet that will focus on keeping people healthy and safe through the COVID-19 pandemic. ͞The pandemic has turned the lives of British Columbians upside down,͟Premier Horgan said. ͞We have come a long way together, but we have much further to go. This skilled, diverse team is ready to continue our fight against COVID-19 and build an economic recovery that includes everyone.͟ The new cabinet members are tasked with continuing government͛s cross-ministry response to the pandemic, providing better health care for people and families, delivering affordability and security in B.C.͛s communities, and investing in good jobs and livelihoods in a clean-energy future. ͞I know this is a hard time for British Columbians. COVID-19 has brought challenges unlike any we͛ve faced before,͟Premier Horgan said. ͞By putting people first, investing in hospitals and diagnostics, supporting front-line workers and by everyone doing their part to fight this virus, we will make it through, together.͟ The new cabinet includes 20 ministers and four ministers of state. Gender representation remains balanced. The cabinet will be supported in its work by 13 parliamentary secretaries, with portfolios including Rural Development, Anti-Racism, and Technology and Innovation. The Conservancy is a non-profit society, having an objective of the protection and enhancement of the ecological health of Bowen Island and the surrounding marine environment. The society has over 100 active members and enjoys broad support in the Bowen Island community. Bowen Island is surrounded by the waters of Howe Sound, which were heavily impacted by industrial activity and resource development throughout the 20th century. In recent years, however, Howe sound has experienced a substantial recovery. Marine life, while undoubtedly not back to pre-development levels, has been recovering from historic lows. This recovery is visible in the frequent observations of whales and other marine mammals that have been absent for many years. More careful observation has shown that life further down the marine food chain has also been recovering. In particular, and most significant for the purpose of this letter, substantial amounts of herring and herring spawn have been observed by scientists and “citizen scientists“ in recent years. It is not surprising to see a correlation between the increase in marine mammal sightings and the increase in herring. It is widely recognized that herring provide a critical link in the marine food web between plankton and larger fish, marine mammals and birds. Thus, we believe that it is fundamentally important for herring stocks to be protected in order to maintain the ongoing ecological recovery in Howe sound.

Your help is greatly appreciated! Dear MLA, I wish to add my name to the list of British Columbians who find the shortage of veterinarians in BC unacceptable. We understand that BC can add an additional 20 BC student seats to BC’s regional veterinary college, but that the government declined to do so, citing costs. In the interest of animal health and welfare issues including relief from suffering and unnecessary death, public health, and biosecurity for BC, we ask you to ask the Minister of Advanced Education Anne Kang to fund an additional 20 BC seats at WCVM effective immediately. As a BC resident, I want my voice added as an individual who cares about the health and welfare of animals and who wishes the government to provide funding to help alleviate the shortage of veterinarians in BC.
