Now it was back-to-back games, on Thursday we fronted up to The Scotts College (TSC) and played a formidable and well-drilled team on the school’s main pitch. Despite being outsized our boys did tremendously well scoring over 30 points and only losing by about 2 converted tries. Post match we were joined by 8 Wallabies (including 4 test starters) for a skills session that was a great thrill for the boys. Our last game was the Saturday morning of the 3rd test. We played a strong Lindfield Rugby Club team in a particularly even match where 3 tries a-piece were scored and HKFC was only behind at the bell by a pair of conversions.

18 Jul/Aug 2013 Several players deserve specific mention. Iain Carmichael was prominent in every game and was even a standout against the older, larger TSC boys. Garrett Stanhope relished the larger fields in Oz, making the gain line every time he touched the ball and generally making 20 metres or more on every run. The front row of Ben Jones, Samuel Phillip and Alex Lee also stood out, not only did they control the rucks, but they took several tight- head scrums from every team they played (including the larger TSC boys) and took every single scrum from Lindfield – as every forward knows this is an incredible achievement. There were several acts of selflessness for the sake of the team, Oliver Harmer, Will Price and James Taylor in particular played in non-preferred positions and I salute this gesture. held us on. Ladies’ Teams End of Season Reports

LADIES B TEAM This season the ‘B’ team has stood for ‘B’abies – yes - there were several on-pitch strops that led to a few yellow cards, but we were also the only team in the premier league with a full cheerleading squad of under-5s on the sidelines eachweek! 2012-13 saw the return of Super-Mums Mel Miers and Jo Caldwell, as well several new faces scattered amongst the stalwarts. Ignoring the (boring) statistics of the 2012-13 season (league points, goals for, goals against, some more goals The confidence of beating the Dutch flowed on to the team against, yellow cards), the HKFC B team have had their winning every other game of the season bar a 2-2 draw with most successful year to date. This gave eventual Premier One winners the Dutch an almighty lead heading into the second half of the season. A lead we unfortunately could not catch. The second half of the season saw a vast improvement starting with a 4-0 victory over the Dutch. We out-scored them, out-ran them and generally ruffled a few feathers.

With so many new players to the D team this season, we took some time to find our groove but managed to battle into 7th place in the first division and reach the semi-finals of the cup competition. Battle is certainly the operative word as we suffered some impressive war wounds on the way: three broken fingers (two requiring surgery), a torn hamstring, a strained neck, a strained back, a torn meniscus, a twisted ankle, dozens of stitches and bruises galore (most of which were sustained ON the pitch). However, no matter how many knocks the opposition gave us, we never gave up and I was proud to captain such a determined team. Numbers at training and availability for games were high throughout the season and indicative of the D team dedication. Karin Looram, Netball DSA Chairperson

CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE Happy Summer! I trust everyone is enjoying their break from Hong Kong, school and most importantly netball. The DSA finished off on a very high note from last season with all but one of our teams qualifying for the semi-finals. This is a massive accomplishment given that in most divisions we only have one team and the divisions are getting tougher and larger as the seasons go by. Congratulations to all teams this season. I am pleased to say that many members stepped up to join the DSA committee at the AGM. I know that with all the knowledge and experience they bring, the DSA will benefit immensely. A big thank-you to all those who have volunteered to help the DSA on the committee. Once again this season, we say goodbye to too many good friends! Unfortunately for the DSA we said goodbye to Stacey McLocklan and Amanda McPherson. As with all players, we regret not having them on court just as much as off, but particularly these two members who have contributed so much to the DSA over many seasons. Stacey was an incredibly talented player who has played netball at top level both in Hong Kong as well as New Zealand. She was also a valuable member to the DSA committee for many seasons. We are hoping that Stacey will reassume her tour co-ordinator role back in NZ so HKFC can get to some NZ tournaments. Amanda leaves us for Shanghai. When Amanda came to HKFC she was a shooter but very quickly slotted into the role of a defender, which is testament to her playing abilities. When Karen Morgans left for NZ, Amanda bravely took over the Junior Netball Programme, without whom it may have stalled. She has run the junior programme ever since and has it has truly gone from strength to strength under her management. The junior teams are constantly at the top of their divisions and the players have improved immensely with Amanda’s training. We hope to also see Amanda either on or off court in Shanghai! VISITING TEAM FROM ROYAL BANGKOK POLO CLUB

Sawasdee ka! On 8th June, the Tennis Society warmly welcomed our good friends from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club – Polo Club to play in a Tennis Tournament followed by a BBQ dinner. Having been overwhelmed by Thai hospitality when we visited RBSC last year, we were fully prepared for our Thai friends. The Polo Club comprised of 40 people, while the Football Club sent over 20 members to play in the tournament. It was a big event with a lot of work but things went smooth as silk. The highlight of the Tournament was an exhibition match between the VIP from the Thai delegates, Mr. Youngyoot, who was last year’s Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and his wife Ms Ubon, against our Bobby Lawson from the General Committee and his lovely wife Vivian. The match was neck-and-neck and in the end, the Lawsons just prevailed with a 5-4 victory over our visitors. About 70 people attended the BBQ in the evening which was full of fun, good conversation, laughter and a great atmosphere. We are especially grateful to our sponsor Wolf Blass for the superb food and wine. In the end, our visitors won the match by a single point -- 12.5 points to 11.5 points. Celina Leung and Helen Ormerod did a fantastic job of sorting out all of the arrangements for our visitors, including special prizes and a superb WIMBLEDON SOCIAL BBQ buffet at very short notice. We absolutely enjoyed playing host to our Thai visitors who were charming and delightful and we already have standing invitations to visit them.
