Western historiography of ‘Russia’ has always been that of a history of the Russian empire and never that of the Russian state, such as the Russian Federation since 1991. This places western historiography at odds with standard western histories of European nation-states. Western and Ukrainian histories of Ukraine are those of the nation-state, which came into existence in 1991. This chapter focuses on Ukraine within western historiography of ‘Russia’ for two reasons. The first is that Russian nationalists (imperialists) have always viewed Ukrainians and Belarusians in a different manner to other nationalities in the Tsarist Empire and Soviet Union and as independent states since 1991. Ukrainians and Belarusians were viewed as two of the three branches of the tryedynstva russkoho naroda by Tsarist Russia; in the USSR, this was modified to the eastern Slavs being close but separate peoples. Limited space means this book can focus on only Ukraine and not include an analysis of western historiography of Belarus. Russian attitudes to Belarus are in many ways worse than those towards Ukraine, and Russian leaders and media use ‘White Russia’ and ‘Belarus’ interchangeably.[1] President Vladimir Putin described Belarusians as ‘perhaps, the closest country to us. -

Remaking Terra Cosacorum: Kozak Revival and Kozak Collective Identity in Independent Ukraine by Huseyin Oylupinar A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies and Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Huseyin Oylupinar, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation was undertaken to test the premise whether the modern Kozak revival was or could be used as a platform by the Ukrainian national cultural establishment for renegotiation, reformation, and consolidation of national identity in post-Soviet Ukraine. Its primary aim was to observe the relevance and function of deeds, images, traditions, memories and spaces—that is, the symbolic sources of the Kozak forefathers in addressing the problems of national consolidation in the present time. Secondarily, it was to explore the tools used in communication, propagation and negotiation of Kozak identity in Ukraine today. To observe the functions of Kozak symbolic sources, the dissertation traces them from the late 17th century to the fall of the Soviet Union. To investigate the tools used for communicating, propagating and negotiating Kozak identity the dissertation examines modern-day Kozak communities, and Kozak physical and cultural spaces. Working on the presumptions —that post-Soviet Ukraine would require national consolidation, —that bridging the Kozak past into the present would constitute an essential process of national consolidation, and —that via Kozak symbolic sources nationally oriented Ukrainians would efficiently rediscover, reinterpret and regenerate the Kozak identity, an examination of the primary and secondary sources, and the original oral narratives gathered in the course of on-site fieldwork demonstrated ii convincingly that the Kozak revival has been an active and effective tool of the Ukrainian national establishment in negotiating and propagating national identity in independent Ukraine. -

Умань опинилася на кількох: географічному, цивілізаційному, військово- му, політичному, етноконфесійному, культурному. Кордони рухаються, а місто зали- шається на місці. Утім, у ньому вже сформовані своєрідні внутрішні кордони. Умань як населений пункт виникає на Великому Степовому кордоні. Упродовж XVII–XVIII ст. Умань була однією з найважливіших фортець у регіоні, де спочатку зіштовху- валися інтереси Речі Посполитої, Запорозької Січі, а згодом Війська Запорозького, Кримського ханства та Оттоманської імперії, Молдавської держави та багатьох ін- ших. Наприкінці XVIII ст. місто у результаті другого поділу Речі Посполитої перейшло під юрисдикцію Російської імперії, що позначилося на його історії аж до 1917 р. Складний відбиток залишили перипетії ХХ ст. У міста з багатим та контраверсійним минулим сформувалися яскраві етноконфесійні та ментальні особливості. Від часу заснування Умані тут мешкають представники різних етнічних спільнот і соціальних станів зі своїм менталітетом та конфесійними орієнтирами: українці, євреї, поляки, росіяни, вірмени, молдавани та ін. Події історії Умані трактуються по-різному, адже в її урбанізованому просторі співіснували спільноти, які конфліктували, взаємодіяли або обирали формат компромісу.
