" Head Above Water " is the first track and the lead single from Avril Lavigne's sixth studio album of the same name. [1] Written by Lavigne with Travis Clark and Stephan Moccio, and produced by the latter, the song was released on September 19, 2018 through BMG Rights Management. [2] [3] Contents. Background [ edit | edit source ] After more than a year from the release of the last single from her fifth studio album, on December 25, 2016, Lavigne announced via her Instagram account that she was working on new music for her upcoming sixth studio album. On August 18, 2018, Lavigne posted on Instagram that new music is coming in September. [4] At the end of August, the song "Head Above Water" was registered [1] and Lavigne deleted almost all her pictures on Instagram. [5] On September 1, Lavigne shared a picture of her underwater via her social media. [6] Several people reported that the image was related to the song "Head Above Water". On September 6, Lavigne posted a lengthy letter to her fans on her website detailing her struggle in the past few years and how she overcame it, this also included a release date for "Head Above Water". [7] She wrote on the letter about the song: Lavigne shared a 30-second-snippet of the song on September 13, 2018. [8] The song was officially released on YouTube and worldwide streaming services on September 19, 2018. Murray described the song's lyrics and production in detail: "Now, we've never been 100% behind Avril Lavigne's music, but we can't help but be touched by the way she's approached what must be an enormously challenging situation." [12] Writing for Spin , Anna Gaca described the track as a "dramatic piano ballad of resilience". [13] Madeline Roth of MTV Canada named "Head Above Water" an "emotionally charged comeback". Roth was impressed with the fact that song wasn't "just metaphorical", because "it documents a culminating moment in Lavigne’s years-long struggle with Lyme disease". [14] Katherine Gillespie from Paper wrote that "Head Above Water" is a "heavy piano ballad about just that: trying to stay alive." [15] Lindsay Elizabeth of Faithwire gave the song a positive review, called the song a "powerful worship ballad". Elizabeth further praised that "Lavigne details her relationship with God, and how He saved her when she thought she was at the end of her life." [16] Michael Foust of Christian Headlines described the song as "God-centric song" that even could be labeled “praise and worship", [17] while Maria Sherman of Jezebel considered the song's nature as "dramatic Christian rock vibes" and comparing it to Rachel Platten's 2015 single "Fight Song". [18] Idolator ' s Mike Wass, wrote that "Avril opens her heart and delivers the best vocal of her career on a song that is destined to help a lot of people get through tough times." [21] Live performances [ edit | edit source ] The debut televised live of "Head Above Water" was recorded for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 12, 2018. [23] On November 19, Lavigne performed the song on Dancing With The Stars (The Finale) for Alexis & Alan's freestyle. Meaning of “Head Above Water” by Avril Lavigne. “Head Above Water” is a very emotional single by the noted Canadian singer and songwriter Avril Lavigne. The lyrics of “Head Above Water” see the narrator (Lavigne) praying to God for help and asking Him not to let her drown. According to Lavigne, her real life struggles with Lyme disease are what inspired the song. In a statement Lavigne released during the official release of the track, she shed more light on that painful period in her life that led to the birth of the lyrics of this emotional ballad. According to her, her Lyme disease got so severe to the point where one night she thought she was going to die and had actually “accepted” her impending death. She said at that moment she felt as though she was physically drowning. And it was at that very scary moment that she prayed to God to save her. Here are the exact words Lavigne said she used in her prayer: “God, please help me to keep my head above water.” Apparently God answered her prayers because she survived that night to share her harrowing story with the world through this song. Facts about “Head Above Water” Avril Lavigne co-wrote “Head Above Water” with Canadian songwriter/composer Stephan Moccio and American singer Travis Clark (lead vocalist of the rock band We the Kings). Aside co-writing the track, Stephan Moccio also produced it. He handled the production all by himself. The song saw its official release on September 19, 2018. About a month before the track’s September release, Lavigne began whetting her fans’ appetite for the single by uploading onto social media a number of images from the song’s official music clip. Prior to “Head Above Water”, the last new music Lavigne released was the song “Fly”, which came out in 2015. According to the singer, her struggle with Lyme disease was mainly what prevented her from releasing new music all that long. Félicitations à tous les lauréats des prix SOCAN 2021 ! Jamais dans notre histoire, la relation entre la création et la consommation de musique n’a été aussi intrinsèquement liée. Nous n’avons jamais eu autant besoin de musique, et les créateurs et éditeurs de musique n’ont jamais eu autant besoin de l’engagement de la SOCAN pour trouver, percevoir et répartir leurs redevances. La musique a rendu le confinement moins pénible, elle nous a donné l’impression que nous ne sommes pas seuls quand on travaille de la maison et elle a rendu plus normales les vidéoconférences avec nos amis et notre famille. L’année 2020 nous a rappelé le lien profond que nous avons avec la musique et le rôle énorme qu’elle joue dans notre santé mentale et émotionnelle, mais au-delà de tout ça, 2020 a révélé les disparités dans le soutien aux créateurs et éditeurs de musique par rapport aux autres industries. Popular Music in FRBR and RDA: Toward User-Friendly and Cataloger-Friendly Identification of Works Kevin Kishimoto (University of Chicago) & Tracey Snyder (Cornell University) Abstract: The gradual adoption since 2010 of the content standard Resource Description and Access, based on the conceptual model Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, has brought change to many areas of library cataloging, including popular music. In particular, the cataloging community has had to grapple with new practices in assigning access points for resources once considered simple, such as popular music albums containing songs written by people other than the featured recording artist. This article outlines some of the difficulties encountered and offers a principled approach to cataloging popular music that would reduce cataloger burden and reconcile catalog data with users' expectations. INTRODUCTION Who can forget the deliciously awkward scene in the 2001 romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary in which the hapless title character performs a badly out-of-tune rendition of the classic ballad “Without You” at a party at the office, with a smoking cigarette in her hand and at least a few drinks in her system?
