Tedious, Wearisome, Wasteful Exercise of SuspenseBy Kindle CustomerMentioned by Austen as a corrupting influence swaying the susceptible mind of the heroine in Northanger Abbey, this has long been on my to read list. I would go beyond not recommending this gothic tale, to actually warning others not to invest time so unwisely. The tale has a sluggish, prolonged feeling that SOMETHING is wrong, but discretion to never talk about things on the part of the characters creates the sole sense of mystery. In the last ten pages, I swear Radcliffe just tired of writing, resolved everything--unsatisfactorily, revealing some mysteries as farces, others as incidental insanity resulting from immorality, and sort of "all's well that is ends well" the story. Yuch, just yuch.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exceptional reading and carefully crafted.By bruce cornelyThis is an exceptional read and is great literature which I love reading. To me the story is secondary with primary enjoyment from reading descriptions of scenery and digging into the personalities of characters. Violence and sexual content are present when necessary but are only alluded to as necessary events in the plot. There is nothing offensive. Ratcliffe is a magnificent writer. There was a part of the story that was incredibly tedious and boring, but after slogging through it I realized that I was feeling what the character must have been feeling. There are characters to love, dislike, hate, or that I enjoyed slipping into their character. As I said before, the scenery descriptions are like being there. Highly recommended.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. About the AuthorAnn Radcliffe (9 July 1764 ndash; 7 February 1823) was an English author and a pioneer of the Gothic novel. Her style is romantic in its vivid descriptions of landscapes and long travel scenes, yet the Gothic element is obvious through her use of the supernatural. It was her technique of explained Gothicism, the final revelation of inexplicable phenomena, that helped the Gothic novel achieve respectability in the 1790s.
