In A2010, she was the highest-grossing fi lm star in the world after playing the lead in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and starring alongside Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right. She has since starred in Jane Eyre opposite Michael Fassbender and as the writer Robyn Davidson in Tracks. Now she plays Judy in Judy and Punch, Mirrah Foulkes’s unruly, subversive, feminist take on the traditional puppet show. How was it working on Judy and Punch? It was a rough shoot. Low budget Australian fi lmmaking is full on. We had babies, dogs, horses, puppets — so many uncontrollable elements — but got through it. Melbourne weather is notoriously horrible and [meant] we were unable to drive down to the location — an artist’s estate. The cast and crew had to trudge down a very steep slope and we were stuck there for a couple of days. What is the moral of Judy and Punch? Judy gives a speech in which she says the witch might appear to be her today, but everybody lives in fear that tomorrow they might be perceived to be witches. It is a brilliant message that pinpoints the fearmongering happening here [in the UK] and in America. Was it diffi cult to get Judy’s emotional reactions across with such an economical script and You’ve just turned 30 – do you Although acting is a really awesome speedy plot? feel like laughing or crying? • Production Notes
A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations that compel Rachel to take matters into her own hands.

Editing by Bernat Vilplana. Music by Fernando Velázquez. A Universal Pictures Production. Original Release: October 2015. MA rating. Length: 119 minutes. Rating 85% All pictures are taken from the public domain or Wikimedia 2 Cast Edith Cushing: Mia Wasikowska Lucille Sharpe: Jessica Chastain Thomas Sharpe: Tom Huddleston Doctor Alan McMichael: Charlie Hunnam Carter Cushing: Jim Beaver Ogilvie: Jonathan Hyde Mrs McMichael: Leslie Hope Ferguson: Bruce Clay Eunice: Emily Coutts Young Edith: Sofia Wells Finlay: Alec Stockwell Coroner: Bill Lake Reverend: Sean Hewitt Review Crimson Peak is a superior horror film; more of a chiller than a thriller - until the last thirty minutes, then it unleashes thrills and horrors galore. Those last thirty minutes are made all the more effective by the suspenseful build-up. Until then the narrative segments the chilling suspense with brief moments of horror. These not only warn; they tantalise about the mystery on the way to the revealing climax. 3 Almost any viewer will either work out what that mystery, or at the least, aspects of it, long before the naïve heroine Edith Cushing does. Originality is not the film’s strength. Naïve, isolated, inexperienced, young women have been going to dark sinister, isolated, aristocratic houses (and staying there!) since at least 1847, when Jane Eyre was published.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister. (My script was partially inspired by the last book published by Mark Twain: The Diaries of Adam and Eve -- though no direct reference to the book is made other than the character’s names.) These two lovers are archetypal outsiders, classic bohemians, extremely intelligent and sophisticated -- yet still in full possession of their animal instincts.

The show is a hit due to Judy's superior puppeteering, but Punch's driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge. Long Synopsis In the anarchic town of Seaside, nowhere near the sea, puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit due to Judy's superior puppeteering, but Punch's driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge. In a visceral and dynamic live-action reinterpretation of the famous 16th century puppet show, writer director MIRRAH FOULKES turns the traditional story of Punch and Judy on its head and brings to life a fierce, darkly comic and epic female-driven revenge story, starring MIA WASIKOWSKA and DAMON HERRIMAN. 2 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT JUDY AND PUNCH is a dark, absurd fable treading a line between fairy-tale, fantasy and gritty realism, all of which work together to establish a unique tone while upsetting viewer expectations. When Vice Studios’ Eddy Moretti and Danny Gabai approached me with the idea of making a live action, feminist revenge film about Punch and Judy, they encouraged me to let my imagination go wild and take the story wherever I felt it needed to go.
