Nelson was 21 years old when he entered the Army Air Force and served fi ve years until 1947. He was a pilot but never fl ew in combat. He was an instructor for others teaching bomb drops. Nelson spoke to the students not only about his military experiences but other experiences as well and shared life lessons he has learned. For example, when Nelson’s pilot instructor asked, “What are we going to do today?” he would respond, “We are going to do the same thing we did yesterday, but today we are going to do it better.” He taught history and driver’s education at Castle until 1983. Nelson also coached boys’ basketball. He will be inducted into the Oakland City Basketball Hall of Fame on Jan. 18, 2014. Nelson was a neighbor of Gilkey’s parents for 40 years. “He and his wife spend birthdays and holidays with my family, so we have always considered them as part of our family,” said Gilkey. “My children love them as an extra set of grandparents.” Gilkey’s students made thank you cards for Nelson on Nov. 12. “He was so happy when I delivered the cards and read through each one at least twice,” she said.
