THE ROMANTIC BABY BOOMER Abstract On any given Friday night, theaters across the United States are filled with teenagers and young adults, often to see the new Blockbuster that has just been released. The film industry has responded by producing content specifically targeted to this demographic. Unfortunately, this has left a major portion of the population waiting for material that is relatable. Even when there is a character over the age of 50, they are regularly for comic relief or portrayed as weak and incapable. The recent trend of romantic comedies incorporating storylines for older adults is still underrepresented in academic research. This thesis set out to understand the extent of successful aging content in romantic comedies with leading actresses and actors of the baby boomer generation. Content and textual analysis of 41 film trailers found a lack of individuality with many adhering to successful aging concepts and traditional gender roles. Additionally, age and associated effects including anxiety of death and the midlife transformation are supposed to be overcome, often with romance. Nevertheless, as directed in successful aging active engagement, sexual lives, high wealth and prime physical bodies was expected. However, the older characters are continuously compared to younger characters and both men and women desire the youthful bodies. This participatory research adds to the body of research on film trailers and aging in film, but is also applicable to the film industry as new films should include a variety of older characters in roles that embrace aging instead of pitying older adults. It wasn’t until I stepped back that I realized how much images meant to entertain affect how the world is viewed. Without studying entertainment media, it will be that much more challenging to promote content which represents the diversity of thought and experiences present in everyday life. First, thank you to my advisor, Dr. Carol Liebler who guided me throughout this year from development to the final defense. I am extremely grateful for your support and reassurances during this process. It is difficult to express how thankful I am that you were my advisor. I would also like to thank my committee members Dr. Bob Thompson, Dr. Eric Kingson, and Dr. Dennis Kinsey for their time; this thesis has been greatly enhanced by your expertise. Finally, I thank my friends and family. To my parents, who have unconditionally supported me, always inspired me to ask questions and taught me to strive to view the world as it should be – thank you. To Alex, Andy, and Michele, thank you for listening and freely giving support when I needed it most. These two years would have been filled with a lot less laughter without you. iv THE ROMANTIC BABY BOOMER Table of Contents Chapter One: Introduction...............................................................................................................1 Chapter Two: Literature Review.....................................................................................................8 Theoretical Framework........................................................................................................8 Successful Aging Theory.........................................................................................8 Aging in Society................................................................................................................12 The Social Impact of Sex.......................................................................................13 Advertising Old Age..............................................................................................15 Film Industry Representation.................................................................................17 Financial Power of a Generation........................................................................................20 The Creation of the Romantic Comedy.............................................................................22 Screwball Comedy.................................................................................................23 Woman’s Film.......................................................................................................24 The Modern Day Romantic Comedy.....................................................................25 Research Questions............................................................................................................25 Quantitative Phase One: Content Analysis............................................................26 Qualitative Phase Two: Textual Analysis..............................................................26 Chapter Three: Methodology.........................................................................................................28 Sample................................................................................................................................28 Quantitative Content Analysis: Phase One........................................................................31 Qualitative Textual Analysis: Phase Two..........................................................................33 Validity..............................................................................................................................35 Researcher’s Role..............................................................................................................36 v THE ROMANTIC BABY BOOMER Chapter Four: Results....................................................................................................................38 (Successful) Aging and the Mid-Life Reevaluation..........................................................39 Age is More Than Just a Number..........................................................................39 What is Left in Life?
