    “Girl Strikers” and the 1918 Vancouver Steam Laundries Dispute Janet Mary Nicol campaign to raise the minimum wage in British Columbia spearheaded by the BC Federation of Labour’s first female president, Irene Lanzinger, and affecting 63 percent of women Awage earners, concluded successfully in 2018.1 A century ago women performing low-paid work fought a similar battle for a living wage. They were limited to gendered work, navigating inferior working conditions, sexual harassment, and health and safety concerns. Women comprised 13 percent of the Canadian labour force compared to nearly 50 percent in 2015, typically working until marriage, their husband the sole wage- earner.2 Organizing into trade unions was challenging, and white, male- dominated leaders were unreliable in their support. Women employed as telephone operators, retail clerks, bookbinders, tailors, and domestic workers in Vancouver signed union cards in the early 1900s, but their locals were not easily sustained. Such was the case of a laundry workers’ union formed in the city in 1902 and dissolved three years later.3 Still women persisted. When a labour shortage caused by the First World War occurred between 1916 to 1920, union membership soared.     "STOUT LADIES AND AMAZONS": Women in the British Columbia Coal-Mining Community of Ladysmith, 1912-14 JOHN R. HINDE URING THE WEEK of 12 August 1913, riots shook the strike bound coal-mining communities of Vancouver Island.1 DHomes were looted and burned to the ground in Extension and vandalized in Ladysmith, South Wellington, and Nanaimo. Many people were physically assaulted, and, although no one was killed, one arrested miner, twenty-one-year-old Joseph Mairs Jr., died later in prison, and one strike-breaker, AlexMcKinnon, had his right hand blown off when dynamite was thrown into his Ladysmith home. The provincial government had refused to intervene in the strike, but, when it received news of the violence, it responded swiftly and harshly, mobilizing the militia, declaring martial law in the affected regions, and, with the assistance of the police, drawing up lists of suspected rioters and union organizers. Within a week there were 450 soldiers in Cumberland, 130 in Ladysmith, and nearly 1,000 in Nanaimo. When the dust finally settled, authorities had arrested 213 men, tried 166, and sentenced 50 to prison. Of the 50 convicted men, 38 were from Ladysmith. Respectable BC society was shocked to learn during the preliminary investigations and the subsequent trials that "at Ladysmith and at Extension a great deal of the damage done was the work of women sympathizers."2 This was of grave concern to Frederick William Howay, the judge and historian who presided over the trial of the Ladysmith strikers.     The Mothers5 Council of Vancouver: Holding the Fort for the Unemployed, 1935-1938 IRENE HOWARD In April 1935 the single unemployed men in the National Defence Gamps in British Columbia, under the leadership of the Relief Camp Workers' Union, walked out en masse and gathered in Vancouver to confront the authorities with their demand for work and wages. The response of Mayor Gerald Grattan McGeer was to read the Riot Act in Victory Square. The date is well remembered, for 23 April 1935 brought to a head the smouldering unrest of the unemployed. For the next three years, the economy still in crisis, they continued to petition, demonstrate and organize. In May 1938 the relief camp workers precipitated a second major confrontation — the Post Office sit-down strike. During these three years the Mothers5 Council of Vancouver supported the unemployed, especially throughout the two major strikes, providing food, clothing and shelter for those who did not qualify for relief, joining wholeheartedly in demonstrations and rallies, and initiating their own forms of protest. Although a superficial account of the Mothers5 Council might suggest that it was a traditional women's organization acting in an auxiliary capacity to the Relief Camp Workers5 Union, close study reveals that the Council took a pre-eminently political direction, independently attempting to influence governments and contributing substantially to the public debate on what turned out to be an insoluble problem. "Remember the women of Paris marching on Versailles for bread," remarked an anonymous onlooker as ten mothers from Vancouver led a contingent of the unemployed up Government Street in Victoria in one of the last episodes of the Post Office sit-down strike.
