PLAYING IN THE DIRT: STILLWATER AND THE EMERGENCE OF RED DIRT MUSIC By AARON M. MOORE Bachelor of Arts in Education in History Northeastern State University Tahlequah, Oklahoma 1998 Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS July, 2010 © 2010 Aaron M. Moore ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PLAYING IN THE DIRT: STILLWATER AND THE EMERGENCE OF RED DIRT MUSIC Thesis Approved: Dr. William Bryans Thesis Adviser Dr. Michael Logan Dr. L.G. Moses Mr. Wayne Bovenschen Dr. Mark E. Payton Dean of the Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It is a pleasure to thank the many people who made this thesis possible. First I would like to express my gratitude to Jay Falkner for introducing me to Red Dirt music in 1998 by playing Jimmy LaFave’s album Austin Skyline and for subsequently involving me in his many bands. Without the contacts made from working with Marshallcity and South 40, I would have been unable to begin this project. It is difficult to overstate my gratitude to John Cooper and Brad Piccolo of the Red Dirt Rangers. Their willingness to share their experiences and contact others in the Red Dirt community to get their assistance has been a true blessing. I am indebted to my advisor, Dr. Bill Bryans for his willingness to work with me on a popular history topic. His efforts to explain things clearly and simply were of great value during course work and during my thesis-writing period. I would also like to thank Dr.

  • Galleywinter.Com Texas Music Festival Review
So, the 21st Annual Larry Joe Taylor’s Music Festival has come and gone, and it was one for the record books in more ways than one. 41,000 folks through the gates, good weather the entire time, and hundreds of tweets pouring out from my Blackberry and others when technology allowed. What follows is my near 5,000 word recap on what happened. -Brad I hear and read lots of people cracking on the Texas/Red Dirt scene and if they write it off as simply a rowdy soundtrack for beer drinking they are truly ignorant. While that happens to some extent out at LJTs, to reduce this music, scene and festivals of all kinds into that small-mindedness is missing out on a lot of cool stuff. As pointed out by Kelly over at the Gobbler‟s Knob /the9513 during his coverage, not many festivals and scenes can have Walt Wilkins and Ray Wylie Hubbard in an acoustic format, then 100 yards away have a huge stage with thousands of people rocking along to Cross Canadian Ragweed or Reckless Kelly, topped off by late night acoustic campfire jams simultaneously involving Randy Rogers and Susan Gibson. With that clarification out of the way, I‟ll try to recap and describe the highlights from five days of musical perfection. Wednesday: Kicked off with the quickest trip through the entrance lines I‟ve ever encountered at LJTs. Good thing, because I was running late and wanted to get my camp set up, passes acquired and be up front for Josh Grider Trio .

  • Texasoutside.Com Texas Music Festival Review
Larry Joe Taylor's 23rd Annual Texas Music Festival & Chili Cookoff Having recently won the 2011 "Music Festival of the Year" awarded by Texas Regional Radio for last year's Larry Joe Taylor Music Festival, which was the best Texas Music Festival of 2010, we began to ponder how the 23rd annual would be able to top the best Texas Music Festival of the Year award! Then we noticed that the Festival was mentioned in Friday's edition of the New York Times - Wow, how 'bout that, not a bad start for the 2011 festival. But when I looked at the lineup for the 23rd annual festival, the first comment was "Larry Joe and his son Zack nailed it again!" Hands down this was the best ever mix of performers out of all the six years we have been attending this outstanding festival. In fact, in the 2011 program Larry Joe stated "I've had the pleasure of hosting this musical event for 22 years and I'm telling you that the music lineup this year is the best ever!" I sure agree with that statement. The 23rd annual Texas Music Festival included some veterans and Texas legends (like Richard Leigh, Michael Hearne, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock), some up and comers (KHYI's Battle of the Bands Winner and the 106.9 The Ranch's 2011 Singer Songwriter winner), lots of our favorite bands (Tejas Brothers, Davin James, Roger Creager, Tommy Alverson, Max Stallings, Matt Martindale, and of course Larry Joe Taylor), and some of the best of the Texas country music scene (Pat Green, Randy Rogers Band, Cody Gill, Reckless Kelly, Kevin Fowler, Stoney LaRue).
