Resurfacing in a Pandemic: Why Radio Re-Embraced Parmalee. It All Begins with a Song
2021 March 15 CountryInsider.com | Sign Up For Daily Email Here Resurfacing In A Pandemic: Why Radio Re-Embraced Parmalee. It all begins with a song. When Steve Stewart, director of operations for Cox Media Group Orlando and PD at “K92.3” WWKA, first heard Parmalee’s “Just the Way” feat. Blanco Brown in October 2019, he knew the band had a hit on its hands. It took more than a year for other stations to agree. Parmalee, who first played Stewart the song on a tour bus after an Orlando show, is No. 1 on this week’s Mediabase country chart — eight years after last topping the chart with “Carolina” in 2013. The band released “Just the Way” December 2019 and WWKA became the first station to add it the following month. He was in his early 20s and came to work at iHeartMedia KNIX Phoenix (102.5), hopelessly hungover after a night of heavy drinking at a bowling alley. Barrel and friends were celebrating the first night of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “Soul 2 Soul Tour” doubleheader in Phoenix. His PD sent him home, told him to pull himself together and return to cover the second shift. Retribution, he said, was in order. Barrel Boy wasn’t in trouble, but the PD wanted to have some fun at his expense. (Continued on page 4) COUNTRY INSIDER TOP 5: WUBL’s Angie Ward: From College Radio To Country Radio Hall of Fame. ACM Week with Maren Morris
nowing you’re a winner before you get to Las Vegas is a neat trick KMaren Morris shares with ACM radio winners (see page 27) and a few others. “The fi rst people I reached out to were my friends Brothers Osborne and Jon Pardi, because we all got to win our fi rst ACMs together on the same day,” the Academy’s New Female Vocalist says of her Male and Duo/Group cohorts. “I’ve known the brothers since I moved to town,” she says. “They had just gotten a record deal. I’ve only doubling up known Jon for the last two years, but ACM Week With there’s this new class mentality where you root for each other. You’re the young Maren Morris guns, the newbies. It bonds you forever, because you always remember those people you came up with. It’s a really cool thing to see your friends rise up with you.” Also cool? Returning to the site of your fi rst awards show for not one but two nationally televised performances, and a bit of fun, too. Having learned a few lessons the hard way, however, there was also a fair bit of caution in her schedule. Morris shares the story of her big Vegas weekend with Country Air- check below. KEEP THE WHEELS ROLLING Even with the three-week advance notice on her big win, Morris is up for fi ve more. A week before the show, she’s not counting any chickens. “This is the fi rst time I’ve gone into an awards show being a winner, so that pressure’s taken off a little bit,” she explains. -

September 11, 2017 Issue 567 #1 MOST ADDED! THANK YOU COUNTRY RADIO! Remembering Don & Troy The country music world took a hard blow Friday (9/8) with the passing of Country Music Hall of Famer Don Williams, followed all too quickly by news that Montgomery Gentry’s Troy Gentry died in a helicopter crash. The shock is perhaps best expressed in the experience of veteran artist manager John Dorris, who represented both at different times. “I was on the phone with Don’s son learning of his passing when John Michael Montgomery called in to tell me about Troy,” he told Country Aircheck Monday (9/11). Dorris and others who worked with Williams or Gentry share stories below illuminating just how big this loss is.
