Acta Musei Moraviae, Scientiae biologicae (Brno) 89: 117–165. – A systematic review of species of the subfamilies Cassidinae and Hispinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) gathered in the Moravian Museum in Brno is presented in this paper. It reports a complete list of the specimens of each species, together with the dates of collection. A total of 2,678 specimens, representing 19 genera and 94 species from all over the world, mainly from western Palaearctic region, are listed. Type species of Cassida berolinensis var. guentheri Bechynì, 1944, Cassida undecimpunctata[sic!] var. undecimguttata Reitter, 1890 and Ischyronota jakowleffi Reitter, 1889 were found. Additional records from Bohemia and Moravia to Cassida bergeali Bordy, 1995 and C. leucanthemi Bordy, 1995 are presented. Seven new country records are given. Key words. Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Hispinae, faunology, Moravian Museum Brno, Czech Republic Introduction A relatively large collection of cassids, made up of 2,678 specimens, is contained in the Moravian Museum. The collection is not single; it is made up of partial collections that have been donated to the museum or have been purchased by it. The individual collections made by the scientific workers in the museum also create a far from insubstantial element. Most of the specimens stem from the West Palaearctic region, mainly from the territory of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. The most integrated portion from the tropical regions is the Jageman collection. The history of the entomological collections stretches back to the second half of the 19th century. The oldest parts are the K. Mazura, the Nekolný and the V. Zoufal collections. The last-mentioned, from the turn of the 19th century, contains records for many Czech species. Is also contains specimens published by KLIMENT (1899), ZOUFAL (1921) and many others. The most important collections of Coleoptera from the years between the two World Wars were made by E. David, J. Fiala, R. Formánek, M. Kocourek, J. Matoušek and J. Rauscher. They contain material upon which copious entomological papers have been based. One of the most important papers is BECHYNÌ (1944). Many of the dates associated with the Moravia district stem from the collections mentioned above. I found four type specimens described by Reitter in the R. Formánek collection: two syntypes of Cassida undecimpunctata var. undecimguttata Reitter, 1890 and two syntypes of Ischyronota jakowleffi Reitter, 1889. The type specimen for I. jakowleffi is probably the only one that has been lost. 117 L. SEKERKA The Dr. E. Jagemann collection, which contains many tropical specimens, is especially notable; there are some 200 specimens, mainly from Paraguay. Tropical specimens are also included in the Dvoøák collection (coll. in Pakistan in the 1970’s) and in the collection from Guinea (I. Korecká and M. Mrázek leg.). The holotype of Agroiconota cubana Blake, 1970 is part of the tropical material (J. Prokop coll.). The expedition to Afghanistan in the 1960’s was also important, but it yielded only 14 cassids. Most of the material from the 1950’s to the 1980’s was collected by the museum’s scientific staff (L. Pospíšilová, P. Lauterer, J. L. Stehlík and Vl. Krejèí), mainly in the territory of Moravia and Slovakia. Other collections from this period were assembled by Dezort, Grulich and Olejníèek. The collections from the second half of the 20th century contain very notable specimens, often the last-known from our territory. Valid names synonyms and distribution are used after BOROWIEC (1999) and BOROWIEC & ŒWIETOJAÑSKA (2002). Host plants are mentioned in the main after BECHYNÌ (1944), BORDY (2000), BOROWIEC (1997), BOROWIEC & ŒWIETOJAÑSKA (2002), BROVDIJ (1983) and WINSDOR et al. (1992). The dates for each specimen are written in the following order: locality, grid reference number, date of collection, number of specimens, collector’s name, determinator’s name, and sometimes also the name of the “auditor”, i.e. the collection to which the specimen belongs. If dates are missing, they are not mentioned. All the specimens determined by Bechynì and Reitter were revised by myself. Pecha Corrections in the systematic collections There are four major systematic collections (Fiala, Formánek, Grulich and Zoufal) in which many determination changes have been made. All specimens that in my opinion belong to other species have been assigned my own determination labels with the note 118 Acta Mus. Moraviae, Sci. Biol. (Brno), 89, 2004 Cassidinae and Hispinae in Moravian Museum, Brno “ORIGINAL DETERMINATION ERROR” (this label includes the older name determined, since a considerable number of papers and books are referenced upon this material). Where old synonyms have been used, the material has been marked as “OLD SYNONYM” with the label that contains the original determination. Changes in individual collections are given below. The Fiala Collection The Fiala collection contains 46 specimens. Eight of them have been misidentified or old synonyms applied. Cassida ferruginea Fabricius, 1781 = old synonym of Hypocassida subferruginea (Schrank, 1776) (synonymised by DESBROCHES, 1891) 2ex (Brno) Cassida rufovirens Suffrian, 1844 1ex (Moravia – Mohelno, 26.ix.1942, Šnoflák leg.) = C. denticollis (Suffrian, 1844) Cassida sanguinosa Suffrian, 1844 1ex (Moravia – Brno, 25.v.1946, J. See Annex 1 and Annex 2 for further information. 1. Introduction Every five years, the country nature conservation bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot), working jointly through the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), review Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981. The review will provide recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to Ministers for the Environment in the Scottish Government and Welsh Government for changes to these schedules2. This is known as the Quinquennial Review (QQR). As part of the QQR, stakeholders are provided with the opportunity to propose changes to the species on the schedules. This Information Pack has been produced for the 7th QQR (QQR 7). It is important to note that this QQR differs from previous ones. The Information Pack explains the new selection criteria, provides a timetable, and explains the process to be used by stakeholders. Contact details of the QQR Inter-agency Group who are managing QQR 7, are listed in Section 5. In addition, the Information Pack provides details of how to complete the online survey through which stakeholders propose new species for inclusion on, or removal of existing species from Schedules 5 and 8, or propose a change to how species are protected on the schedules.

  • Notes on Cassida Ferruginea and Cassida Mongolica in Japan, with Descriptions of Their Reproductive Systems (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae)
Genus Vol. 24(3-4): 325-333 Wrocław, 28 XII 2013 Notes on Cassida ferruginea and Cassida mongolica in Japan, with descriptions of their reproductive systems (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) HARUKI SUENAGA Cleanpia 106, 3-14-33, Oimatsu-chô, Kurashiki-shi, Okayama Pref., 710-0826 Japan, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Cassida ferruginea GOEZE is recorded from Japan for the first time. This species was previously misidentified and noted under name C. panzeri WEISE. Occurrence of Cassida mongolica BOHEMAN in Japan is confirmed based on new material. Male and female reproductive systems are redescribed for C. ferruginea and described for the first time for C. mongolica. Key words: entomology, faunistics, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Cassida mongolica, Cassida ferruginea, Japan. INTRODUCTION CHÛJÔ (1934) was the first to comprehensively study Japanese and Taiwanese Cassidinae (s. str.); he listed 34 species. YASUTOMI (1952) listed 24 species of Cassidinae (s. str.) from Japan. KIMOTO (1966) revised Japanese Cassidinae and listed 27 species. KIMOTO (1994) treated records of C. mongolica from Japan as misidentification of C. fuscorufa, Thlaspida formosae as the synonym of T. biramosa, and listed 25 species from Japan. OTSUKA (1994) recorded C. mongolica from Japan again. BOROWIEC (1999) resurrected C. japana and C. crucifera from the synonym. KOMIYA (2002) described Notosacantha nishiyamai from Okinawa, Japan. Presently 29 species of Cassidinae (s. str.) are known from Japan. For a long time the male and female genitalia of Cassidinae have not been consi- dered in identifying species and in systematics. BORDY (1995a, b) and SEKERKA (2005, 2006) studied genital structures of Cassidinae, and the taxonomic and phylogenetic 326 HaRUkI SUeNaga importance of the male and female genitalia has been considered for many groups (BORDY & DOGUET 1987, BORDY 2000, BOROWIEC & Świetojańska 2001, Świetojańska 2001, BOROWIEC & SKUZA 2004, SASSI & BOROWIEC 2006, BOROWIEC & opalińska 2007, BOROWIEC & POMORSKA 2009).

  • Cassida Stevensi , a New Species from India (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae
Genus Vol. 22(3): 499-504 Wrocław, 30 XI 2011 Cassida stevensi, a new species from India (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae: Cassidini) Lukáš SEKERKA Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, Branišovská 31, České Budějovice, CZ-370 05, Czech Republic, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Cassida stevensi sp. nov., a member of C. triangulum group, is described and figured from NE India (Darjeeling). Key words: entomology, taxonomy, new species, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Cassida, India. INtRoDUCtIoN Cassida LINNAEUS, 1758, with 428 known species, is the most speciose genus within Cassidinae; 163 of them are known from the oriental region (BOROWIEC & Świetojanska 2011). the area of NE India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Megalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and northern part of West Bengal) is one of its biodiversity hot spots still hiding numerous undescribed species. Part of them had been described in past years (BOROWIEC & Świętojańska 1997, SEKERKA & BOROWIEC 2008, BOROWIEC 2009). During my stay in the Natural History Museum, London I found another new species from Darjeeling district in West Bengal. It belongs to C. triangulum group and its description is given below. Cassida stevensi sp. nov. ETYMOLOGY the species is dedicated to Herbert STEVENS (1877-1964), an ornithologist and collector, who collected this species. 500 LUKáš SEKERKA DIAGNOSIS Cassida stevensi is a member of the C. triangulum group characterized by appen- diculate tarsal claws, venter of pronotum without antennal grooves, elytral disc mode- rately convex, apex of elytra bare, disc of pronotum with red spot and elytra black with yellow stripes. the group comprises only two species: C. triangulum (WEISE, 1897) and C.

  • Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) in Azerbaijan
Turk J Zool 25 (2001) 41-52 © T†BÜTAK A Study of the Ecofaunal Complexes of the Leaf-Eating Beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) in Azerbaijan Nailya MIRZOEVA Institute of Zoology, Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, pr. 1128, kv. 504, Baku 370073-AZERBAIJAN Received: 01.10.1999 Abstract: A total of 377 leaf-eating beetle species from 69 genera and 11 subfamilies (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) were revealed in Azerbaijan, some of which are important pests of agriculture and forestry. The leaf-eating beetle distribution among different areas of Azerbaijan is presented. In the Great Caucasus 263 species are noted, in the Small Caucasus 206, in Kura - Araks lowland 174, and in Lenkoran zone 262. The distribution of the leaf-eating beetles among different sites is also described and the results of zoogeographic analysis of the leaf-eating beetle fauna are presented as well. Eleven zoogeographic groups of the leaf-eating beetles were revealed in Azerbaijan, which are not very specific. The fauna consists mainly of the common species; the number of endemic species is small. Key Words: leaf-eating beetle, larva, pest, biotope, zoogeography.
