  • Development of a Cross Platform Support System for Language Learners Via Interactive Television and Mobile Phone
DEVELOPMENT OF A CROSS PLATFORM SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR LANGUAGE LEARNERS VIA INTERACTIVE TELEVISION AND MOBILE PHONE SANAZ FALLAHKHAIR A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2009 The University of Brighton Abstract This thesis explores and develops the potential of interactive television (iTV) technology for language learning. Through a modified form of the socio-cognitive engineering approach (Sharples et al., 2002a), a range of learner centred design activities were carried out and a system developed to provide cross platform support, blending iTV and mobile phones, for adult language learners. The focus group technique was used to study adult language learners‘ strategies, motivations and use of technologies for learning. The results of this study were integrated to shape a framework for iTV based language learning, drawing also on language learning theories and the learning affordances of the iTV technology. On the basis of this framework, a number of scenarios were developed, which were subsequently translated into a list of general requirements. TAMALLE (Television and Mobile Assisted Language Learning Environment), a prototype system based on these requirements, was designed and developed. TAMALLE is a cross platform informal language learning environment that supports learners‘ understanding of authentic materials broadcast on television, by scaffolding difficult language items with explanation. It supports learners‘ overall understanding and enables learners to construct and organise their own individualised knowledge environment, which can be also accessed on an anytime and anywhere basis. In this process, the system supports learners‘ comprehension of television programmes and learning of new language items.

  • Americana Final
Americana brings voices from across America to BBC Radio 4 Americana, a new weekly programme presented from the world’s most powerful country by Matt Frei, launches on BBC Radio 4 this spring. Matt will be joined in the Washington DC studio by an eclectic panel of guests. Emerging cultural stars, provocative writers and some current prominent thinkers aim to give the Radio 4 audience an insider’s guide to the people and stories shaping the USA. Americana will also team up with radio stations around the country, bringing reports and features from places off the beaten track. America’s first black president has made ‘change’ his mantra. The meltdown of Wall Street has dislocated the country’s status. President Obama is trying to change the way the country carries out its diplomacy. Americana will look at what these changes mean for America itself, and the rest of the world. Mark Damazer, Controller BBC Radio 4 says on his blog today: “Since Alistair Cooke’s death and the demise of his Letter From America, I have been thinking about a new programme that would ruminate about America - one that would give fresh insights– from the city streets of Chicago and LA, to the small towns of Tennessee and Montana. Americana will bring Radio 4 listeners a sense of the country’s vibrant and often complicated character.” Presenter Matt Frei says: “I’m very excited by the prospect of Americana. There is nothing like it on national radio. I feel sure the discussions with leading thinkers from the worlds of culture, ethics, politics, business and religion will entertain Radio 4’s ever inquisitive audience.” 18 April 2009 For further information: BBC Radio 4 Publicity, 0207 765 2629 or [email protected] www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 Note to Editors: • Americana will be broadcast at 7.15pm every Sunday from late spring (date tbc) • Matt Frei is anchor of BBC World News America, a nightly newscast broadcast from the BBC's Washington DC bureau, airing on BBC America and BBC World.

  • Infiltrating the Space, Hijacking the Platform: Pussy Riot, Sochi Protests, and Media Events
. Volume 12, Issue 1 May 2015 Infiltrating the space, hijacking the platform: Pussy Riot, Sochi protests, and media events Kenzie Burchell, University of Toronto, Canada Abstract: The contemporary reformulation of the media events framework often focuses on the transformative role of mobile, video and social networking technologies in a global context, eclipsing another fundamental dimension: the geographically-bounded space of the media event. This article examines the surveillance and control of the physical space by organizers of the media event in an effort to control the wider global narrative extending beyond it, in this case the narrative of the controversial 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. For activists and other actors excluded from contributing to this narrative, infiltration of the physical space represents a potential vehicle for mobilizing media attention and engaging audiences with an alternative interpretation of the spectacle. Key words: Media Events, Protest, Geography, Olympics, Russia, Pussy Riot, LGBT, Twitter Introduction The contemporary reformulation of the media events framework often focuses, justifiably, on the transformative role of mobile, video and social networking technologies. When concentrating on these new media practices and the related changes to audience engagement and broadcasting formats, however, a particular element of Dayan and Katz’ (1992) original media events framework is overlooked, if it is not eclipsed altogether: namely, the geographically-bounded space of the media event. This article examines the centrality of the physical space of the media event in controlling the wider performance of the mediated narrative, using as a case study the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. For the event organizers, the physical space is of increasing importance, as control and surveillance of the space provides an extended and militarized media infrastructure for constructing and protecting the global narrative extending beyond the event and the success of the event itself.

  • Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a Two-Part Series Hosted by Journalist Maria Bartiromo
ITALIAN AMERICANS OF FEBRUARY 2015 NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY The largest Italian American population in the United States influences many vibrant and ever-evolving neighborhoods of New York and New Jersey. To celebrate the lives, achievements, and culture Italian Americans have brought to the metro area, WLIW21 is presenting Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey, a two-part series hosted by journalist Maria Bartiromo. The series, a companion program to the PBS broadcast The Italian Americans (Thursdays, February 26 & March 5 at 9pm), highlights this large community’s rich culture and influence, featuring interviews with experts in Italian-American history and culture and prominent Italian Americans, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, chef Lidia Bastianich, the late Governor of New York Mario Cuomo, singer Tony Bennett, actress Susan Lucci, former New York Senator Al D’Amato, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, journalist Steve Adubato, actor Joe Piscopo, and many others. The program is further enhanced by the personal stories, videos, and photos viewers have shared on the Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey webpage (thirteen.org/italian-americans-ny-nj). Host Maria Bartiromo (left) shares a moving testimonial about her Italian-American heritage and childhood in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where her family owned a restaurant called Rex Manor that was named after the boat that took her grandfather, Carmine — a brick layer from Salerno, Italy — to America in 1919. Working at The Rex was a true family affair for the Bartiromos and an invaluable lesson for young Maria about the importance of having a strong work ethic.

CCTV news in English and the battle for global influence 2014-16 Vivien Marsh A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2018 i Abstract China’s official media are nearly a decade into a global expansion programme to challenge the dominance of Anglo-American news organisations and their framing of world events. This research tackles the questions of whether Chinese media abroad deserve to be dismissed as channels for Communist Party propaganda, whether their output has journalistic merit, and whether Chinese journalism has a different character from that of the Anglosphere. The focus is on CCTV-News in English, whose ‘hard news’ output is compared with that of BBC World News TV between 2014 and 2016: previous studies of the channel have concentrated on single regions or events, political strategy or current affairs.
