39 39 ‘A HOUSE TO WHICH THE BEST OF IRISH AUTHORS CAN BRING THEIR MANUSCRIPTS’

Our story goes back to 1856 when Michael Henry Gill, then printer to Dublin University, purchased the publishing and bookselling business of James McGlashan, forming McGlashan & Gill which then became M.H.Gill & Son, then Gill & Macmillan and, in 2016, simply Gill. The bookshop – popularly known as Gill’s and referenced several times in James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegans Wake – was located on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for 123 years until it closed in 1979. Six generations of the Gill family have managed the company, through World Wars, recessions and pandemics, dedicated to their mission of publishing books that inform, educate and entertain. We have been honoured to publish the work of great writers, authorities and experts such as Noel Browne, Garret FitzGerald, Tom Garvin, Eamon de Buitlear, Myrtle Allen, Susan Jane White, Francis Brennan, Matt Cooper and Luke O’Neill. We have published the books you have chosen to read on many aspects of Irish life: from the 1960s bestsellers Prayers of Life to How Stormont Fell; from Rachel's Favourite Food to the Encyclopaedia of Ireland; from the heady high of The Pope’s Children to the popular re-issue of Soundings in 2010, when we all needed a bit more poetry in our lives; from Richie Sadlier’s powerful Recovering and Irelandopedia, which celebrated every county in the country, to Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen’s Aisling series, Blindboy Boatclub’s short story collections, The Gospel According to Blindboy and Boulevard Wren and Other Stories, and the cookbook publishing phenomenon, The Daly Dish by Gina and Karol Daly. Each book, in its own way, captures a slice of life, a slice of we live in. Whether it’s printing, publishing or bookselling, we believe that reading matters. We have always believed in Irish talent and we have always believed in the curious mind of the Irish reader. If we have managed to help produce something from one to satisfy that of the other, then it’s been a good day at the office. Thanks for reading.
