SPRING 2011 GEOPLAN DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY & PROGRAM IN PLANNING AND THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO ASSOCIATION OF GEOGRAPHY ALUMNI (UTAGA) Celebrating our 75th Anniversary he Department of Geography at the University of Toronto was founded in 1935 and the academic year 2010-11 was therefore our 75th anniversary. We had an excellent celebration, packed Twith events. It started early in September with a display at Robarts Library of more than 100 books authored by geography faculty and alumni. The display was seen by thousands of visitors to the library between September and October. We also put on a special departmen- tal speakers series with the theme of “Intersections” between human and physical geography and between geographers and the community. Twenty-two guest speakers participated and we held special panel sessions on the Tar Sands, Climate Change, the Aboriginal City, and Women and Factory Work in China. The biggest event of the year was a full weekend of activities in mid-September. The weekend began early on Thursday, September 16th, when the Planning Alumni Committee hosted its first Fall Plan- ning Mixer at the Duke of York, in honour of Geography’s 75th. On Friday afternoon, renowned climate change scholar Professor Diana Liverman (MA ‘80) from the University of Arizona gave a public lecture on “Governing Climate”. This was followed by an opening reception and book launch for Reflections on the History of Geography at the University of Toronto. On Saturday, there was a faculty panel ses- sion in the morning on the history of the department and a workshop exploring mapping on the web. -

Conservatory of Music Piano Examinations, 1887-2015: Their Impact and Influence
A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL (TORONTO) CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC PIANO EXAMINATIONS, 1887-2015: THEIR IMPACT AND INFLUENCE TATIANA VOITOVITCH-CAMILLERI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO November 2019 © Tatiana Voitovitch-Camilleri, 2019 ii ABSTRACT Since its inception in 1887, the Royal Conservatory of Music has maintained its position as one of the largest and oldest community-based music schools and education centres in North America, with an integrated examination body and a comprehensive graded curriculum, influencing and shaping the Canadian musical landscape. For the past 130 years, the Conservatory has presented a wide-ranging art music repertoire for studying piano and offered a comprehensive system for assessing students’ progress through its Examinations, recently retitled as The Certificate Program. The Conservatory’s internal examinations began in 1887, with the external examinations following in 1898. The latter preserved the format of the former and expanded through increasing the number of the examination centres across Canada for both financial and educational reasons. Despite varying opinions of professionals and amateurs on the efficacy and value of the piano examinations in particular from the beginning, this dissertation, using historical sources and interviews, argues that over the years the structure and content of the piano examinations, while innately conservative on the whole, have kept up with a changing demographic of students across the country, and either countered or taken on the many criticisms that surrounded them over the years despite geographical and financial challenges, and indeed competition from other institutions. -

ROSCOE (1921-2010): PIONEERING INNOVATIONS Sharon VattaY is an architectural historian > SHARON VATTAY with wide-ranging professional and academic credentials. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto where she lectures on the history of architecture. She is also an associate at Goldsmith, Borgal & Company Ltd. Architects (GBCA)—a firm his paper traces the postwar archi- specializing in historic restoration and adaptive Ttectural designs of Stanley M. Roscoe reuse, with projects across Canada. As reported in a 1960 article on Roscoe in Time Magazine, his decade-long tenure as city architect brought to Hamilton “ten years of lively argument.”1 This spirited debate was the result of his role as a champion of modern design, within the traditional nineteenth- century Victorian city of Hamilton (fig. 1). The analysis of Roscoe’s oeuvre shows that, in the overall context of architec- ture in Canada, he was very much keep- ing pace with new developments and progress in building systems then being explored by architects across the coun- try. Not only did the writer of the afore- mentioned Time Magazine article boldly contend that Hamilton had received “the most interesting modern architecture in Canada” as a result of Roscoe’s employ- ment as their city architect,2 but a review of other references in the popular press, along with documents found in Roscoe’s personal correspondence,3 also uncovers many other accolades that support an assertion of the architect as a pioneer in modern architecture. -

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Prof. Ezra Schabas was born in New York and received his Diploma in Clarinet (1943) and Bachelor of Science (1948) from the Juillard School. In 1949, he received his Master of Arts from Columbia University. He also studied at the Conservatoire de Nancy, and the Fontainebleau School for the Arts in France between 1945 and 1950. After several appointments at American universities (1948-1952), he joined the staff of the Royal Conservatory of Music as Director of Concerts and Publicity where he arranged concerts for leading young artists across Canada. During the 1950s he was active as a clarinetist and conductor and managed music at the Stratford Festival (1958 and 1961). In 1960 he joined the staff of the Faculty of Music as Special Lecturer, becoming Associate Professor in 1961 and Professor in 1968. From 1978 to 1983, he was Principal of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Prof. Schabas retired as Professor Emeritus in 1985. Scope and Content The accession documents Prof. Schabas' forty year career as teacher, administrator, and consultant with the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and his numerous external activities as consultant, juror, examiner, and as member in various professional and government organizations devoted to the promotion of the education and professional development of musicians in Canada and abroad. -

People who know me well will want to mark this occasion down in their diary or note it in their blog. Perhaps some kind of celebration is in order.... We are fast approaching the end of the Council term, and by the time you read this we will be in the middle of elections for the next. It has been an honour serving both Council and the membership as President for the past three years. It was a lot of work, but enormously fulfilling. That said, I need to remind everyone that the President is not at the top of the governance structure; that position belongs to Council itself. -
