Gus Van Sant Regis Dialogue with Scott Macaulay, 2003 Scott Macaulay: We're here at the Walker Art Center for Regis dialogue with American filmmaker Gus Van Sant. He'll be discussing the unique artistic vision that runs through his entire body of work. Gus was first recognized for a trilogy of films that dealt with street hustlers, Mala Noche, Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho. He then went on to experiment with forum and a number of other films including To Die For, Psycho and even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Gus is perhaps best known for his films, Goodwill Hunting and Finding Forrester, but all of his work including his latest film, Gerry, has his own unique touch. We'll be discussing Gus' films today during this Regis dialogue. I'm Scott Macaulay, producer and editor of Filmmaker Magazine. I'll be your guide through Gus' work today in this Regis dialogue. Thanks. Gus Van Sant: Thank you. Scott Macaulay: It's a real pleasure to be here with Gus Van Sant on this retrospective ... Which is called on the road again. I guess there are a lot of different illusions in that title, a lot of very obvious ones because a lot of Gus' movies deal with travel and change and people going different places, both locations within America but also in their lives. But another interesting implication of the title is that this retrospective is occurring on the eve of the release here and also nationwide of Gerry, which is really one of Gus' best and most moving films but it's also yet sort of another new direction for Gus as a filmmaker. -

It concludes with a consideration of some broader implications of surveillance messages. George Orwell I identify four types of surveillance humor: accommodation, machine-human frame breaks, dystopias, and reversals. The accommodation theme involves routinizing and folding into everyday activities new (and sometimes shocking) devices. The technology is domesticated and made familiar through its association with commonplace activities. Cloud to describe "a set of political and cultural discourses that have adopted psychotherapy's lexicon—the conservative language of healing, coping, adaptation, and restoration of previously existing order—but in contexts of social and political conflict". Constructing the Self argued that the rhetoric of therapy encourages people to focus on themselves and their private lives rather than attempt to reform flawed systems of social and political power. This form of persuasion is primarily used by politicians, managers, journalists and entertainers as a way to cope with the crisis of the American Dream. The rhetoric of therapy has two functions, according to Cloud: 1 to exhort conformity with the prevailing social order and 2 to encourage identification Constructing the Self therapeutic values: individualismfamilism, self-helpand self- absorption. The origins of therapeutic discourse, along with advertising and other consumerist cultural forms, emerged during the industrialization of the West during the 18th century. The new emphasis on the acquisition of wealth during this period produced discourse about the "democratic self- determination of individuals conceived as autonomous, self-expressive, self-reliant subjects" or, in short, the " self-made man ". Therefore, the language of personal responsibility, adaptation, and healing served not to liberate the working class, the poor, and the socially marginalized, but to persuade members of these classes that they are individually responsible for their plight. -

Program in Science, Technology, and Society, Report to the President
Program in Science, Technology, and Society The Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) helps MIT offer an education that teaches scientists and engineers to engage the social and cultural dimensions of their work at the highest levels. This education sets MIT apart from the numerous engineering schools worldwide that turn out technical specialists. The STS Program continues to distinguish itself as the leading department, and graduate program, of its kind in the United States. Educational Activities Undergraduate In academic year 2017, 82 students from 22 different majors were active STS concentrators. Three students (two in Course 20 and one in Course 3) worked on their minor in STS and Thomas Cowan completed a double major in STS. Thomas’s thesis, “Network Control in a Globalized World: How Visa and Swift’s Founding Structures Serve Their Stakeholders on the International Stage,” was supervised by Assistant Professor William Deringer. Three students worked with us on Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) projects. Professor Emeritus Louis Bucciarelli supervised two students who worked on engineering studies projects, and a freshman who is planning to double major in STS worked on her project, “Popular Science and Science Fiction Fan Cultures of the 1890s,” with Professor Rosalind Williams. Deringer served as STS’s undergraduate officer this year and worked with Williams on the STS Curriculum Committee to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement in the curriculum. The committee researched STS programs beyond MIT, interviewed faculty and students, and presented findings at the end of the year at an STS faculty meeting. A forthcoming report will provide recommendations for future implementation; most immediately we implemented a change to our minor and major programs by replacing subject STS.091 Critical Issues in STS with STS.004 Intersections: Science, Technology, and the World.
