Your Activities/Interests: Having retired, I spend a lot of time with my wife Jan traveling, visiting our kids, managing our finances, skiing, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Jan has a part-time business giving assemblies at elementary schools teaching creative writing using puppets, as well as giving puppet shows at children’s birthday parties and at pre-schools.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: Our son John is pursuing a career in live theater in Chicago, working as an actor (currently in a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater) and as co-artistic director at Stage Left, one of Chicago’s off-loop theater companies. We visit Chicago frequently to see his performances. Our daughter Ann is entering her fourth year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Her husband works in Houston as an astronaut at NASA. They have a delightful 4-year-old daughter who requires our frequent visits to Houston.

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: Granddaughter in Houston loves being a princess (most of the time). Recent visit to DisneyWorld confirmed her interest.

Additional Narrative: After finishing up at MIT, I went to Harvard for an MBA, then joined Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto. I stayed at HP for almost 23 years, doing lots of different things, mostly helping build the computer business from its infancy in 1969 to a multi-billion dollar business when I left. The growth in the business provided lots of opportunities for career growth, challenges, and fun over the years, but by 1991 it was time to move on. I joined Grass Valley Group, a professional video equipment company for about a year and a half, then joined a medium-sized software and services company called USCS International in the Sacramento, CA area. Our management team took the company public in the mid-1990’s, and I parted ways with the company in 1998. Since then, I have done a little consulting, but mostly have enjoyed being able to spend my time according to my own personal priorities, not those of the business.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: I hope MIT can play a leading role in addressing the global warming and energy issues we face. I think this is probably the most difficult technical challenge that man has ever dealt with, and MIT’s expertise and committed effort here can have a major positive impact.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Kathleen McCall Schiff - Gardening, reading

Additional Narrative: Although I am now semi-retired I still work part-time as an industry analyst specializing in data warehousing and business intelligence. A few years ago I started taking courses in financial planning and passed the CFP exam. Since I do not have the requisite three years of experience required for CFP certification, I consider myself an “uncertified financial planner.” For the past few seasons, I have worked part- time for H&R Block doing tax returns; this is more of a hobby than a job and I have met some very interesting people!

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): The sadness of the entire MIT community the day JFK was assassinated. Various SAM fraternity events. The winning MIT basketball team (go Bob and Ray!). Physics lectures in 26- 100. Modeling my fraternity in Dynamo for an Industrial Dynamics term project. Friday morning Freshman quizzes

Best example of MIT helping career: Opening doors for job interviews and establishing instant credibility with both technical and management personnel.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: To remain the premier technical institution that it is and to use its influence for the betterment of mankind

Schulze, Herbert (Dick) R. Course: 6

Home Address: 14081 Tyrol Road, Truckee CA 96161-6751 Home Phone: 530-550-7848 Mobile: 650-650-6511 Email: [email protected] Web Page: www.snappysports.com

Your Activities/Interests:

I am a certified snowboard instructor at Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort, and a sponsored snowboarder in competitions. In April 2007 I won the U.S. national championship in boardercross (race over an obstacle course) in my age group, and placed second overall in all events (half-pipe, slopestyle and alpine racing). I live in New Zealand from July to September so I can snowboard year-round. In March 2007 I retired from my position as Managing Counsel in Intellectual Property with Agilent Technologies, and now I am developing a specialty law practice oriented around mentoring and tutoring new intellectual property attorneys. My weekend home near Lake Tahoe has now become my full-time residence. I also love flying (I am a licensed flight instructor), motorcycling, running, gymnastics, and skateboarding (with crash helmet and padding all over!).

Spouse’s Name & Interests:

None because I am a carefree happy bachelor.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests:

Elayne is a Montessori teacher and likes running. Carl is in his last year of residency, has discovered the joys of nephrology, and likes surfing and skiing and backpacking

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests:

7 Page 8 of 47 Brynna age 12 is full of energy and thinks I am the world’s coolest grampa because of my “cool” activities, Dominic age 7 loves baseball and Spiderman, and Duncan age 6 is in to skiing (skied his first black diamond run a couple of months back) and Tai Kwon Do.

Additional Narrative:

I have said enough already!

Most Vivid MIT Memories:

Oh there are so many. Weekend dinners at The English Room in Boston. Learning to ice skate in freshman P.E. class. My first-ever ride on a motorcycle. Prof Bose walking out in mid-lecture because someone made a hissing noise. Struggling with 8.051. Crisp winter mornings after snowfall. Warm spring days along the Charles. Taking German literature instead of transistor circuit design to the great irritation of my advisor. I could go on and on and on ….

Best example of MIT helping career:

Having an MIT degree helped get me hired several times. More fundamentally, on countless occasions the MIT approach to solving problems (not necessarily engineering ones) has given me the confidence to tackle hard problems, knowing that I possess (or can find) the skills to solve them.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future:

To quote my favorite Vulcan scientist: “Live long and prosper.”

8 Page 9 of 47 Seldon, Lee Course: physics

Home Address: 20 Lomond Drive Home City: Glen Waverley State: Vic ZIP: 3150 Home Phone: 9886-3203 Mobile: Email: [email protected]

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Maggie Seldon, aged care, physiology

Children’s Name(s) & Interests Sylvia – anthropology, conflict resolution, Darwin. Julian – junk cars

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Hitchhiking to Florida and back in freshman year. Modern algebra, although memories do not include any answers. the biology labs, working 24/7 with grad and postgrad students – and profs. Greatest research environment I have ever experienced. Jerry Lettvin, and the great debate with and Seymour Papert, instigated by the paper by Hubert Dreyfus (?) on the impossibility of artificial intelligence. Jerry Lettvin and the great debate with Timothy Leary. Dan Seeley and the physics lab project on gamma rays

Best example of MIT helping career: After backpacking halfway around the world, being almost broke, walking cold into a neurophysiology lab at the Free University in Berlin, being invited to meet the Professor, who asked me to apply for admission as one of his grad students

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: We had to work our bums off, but we had world-class opportunities and felt justifiably proud at coming out the other end. It should stay that way – incredible effort, incredible rewards.

Shalom, Eddy Course: Physics

Home Address:

Home City: Valencia State: CA ZIP: 91355

Business Name: Jet Propulsion Laboratory Title: Technical Manager

Business Address: 4800 Oak Grove Drive

Business City: Pasadena State: CA ZIP: 91109 Business Phone Business Email: [email protected] Your Activities/Interests: Art Nouveau lithographs, outdoor exercise, literature and poetry, anti-war activism.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Gretchen and I have been married for close to 30 years; her primary focus has been in raising our three children, but we are beginning to enjoy travel (a trip to China is being planned), and she is beginning to spend more time in indulging in her interest in gourmet cooking.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: We have achieved the trifecta: all of our three children (two daughters, one son) have graduated from good schools, all are gainfully employed, and all are well rounded, personable people, who watch what they eat and exercise regularly (unlike their parents). Our elder daughter will be married on 07/07/07, and we hope and expect that she and her fiancee will not only be happy, but also lucky.

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: Stay tuned.

Additional Narrative: In Southern California, I miss the nitty gritty intensity the years in and Boston, and wish we could be with you to celebrate the last 44 years. At this stage in my life, I find myself reflecting (I assume others are as well, especially upon seeing the sad list of deceased from our class) on the choices I have made, feeling I have made the best choices I could have in my schooling, my wife Gretchen (an EXTRAORDINARY woman - forgive me for shouting this!), and my career. And please forgive me as well for quoting Wordsworth: “Though nothing can bring back the hour 10 Page 11 of 47 Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower, We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind”

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): The evening when two good friends and I drank too many beers, and ended up scaling , and then drove our motorcycles/scooters in the Great Court in front of Building 10, and were accosted by the Campus Police, who let us off with a warning to “never do it again”. And we never did.

Best example of MIT helping career: Not to be too flip, but I find that my MIT brass rat is worth its weight in gold, and whenever I wear it, people assume that I must be smart, and I must know what I am talking about, neither of which is necessarily true. But at my age, why quarrel and make people unhappy?

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: MIT must simultaneously strive to find the truth, and speak the truth, in all that we do: this is our raison dêtre. The class of 1967 is unique in a way: when we were innocent young adults, several months into our freshman year, John Kennedy was murdered in Dealey Plaza. Since then, it’s become clear to many that the “pseudo science” of the Warren Commission ignored the forces that led us into a war of choice that was justified by patent lies. About 38 years after the murder of JFK, when we were not so innocent, another catastrophic event occurred that resulted in another “shock and awe” attack upon our body politic, which let to a war of choice that was justified by patent lies. The events of 9/11 were grudgingly explained by the 9/11 commission, which used “pseudo-science” to explain how burning jet fuel could result in pools of liquid metal at the base of both WTCs, as well as World Trade building 7, and how weakened steel beams caused these buildings to collapse in a manner exactly akin to controlled demolition. Rather than challenge this patent nonsense, several MIT professors have abused the name of MIT by lending their support to a gigantic cover up. If science can help uncover the forces of fascism that have erupted twice in our lives, it can perform no higher service. As the story goes, even when Galileo was forced to recant his scientific knowledge, he muttered under his breath “and yet, it moves”. MIT must have the courage to speak science to power.

Shapiro, Jeffrey H. Course: VI

Home Address: 18 Azalea Road Home City: Sharon State: MA ZIP: 02067 Home Phone: 781-784-5392 Mobile: Email: [email protected] Web Page: http://www.rle.mit.edu/Shapiro Business Name: MIT Title: Julius A. Stratton Professor of Business Address: 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Room 36-419 Business City: Cambridge State: MA ZIP: 02139 Business Phone 617-253-4179 Business Email: [email protected] Your Activities/Interests: Travel, ballroom dance, gourmet dining, mystery novels, stamp collecting

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Ellen Shapiro - Travel, photography, ballroom dance, gourmet cooking and cookbook collecting, MIT Women’s League, Temple Sinai Social Action Committee

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: Lisa Rindler, attorney; David Shapiro, software engineer (MIT S.B. ’97, MIT M.Eng. ’98)

Additional Narrative: I have now spent 40+ years at MIT, 6 1/2 as a student (undergraduate and graduate) and 34 as a faculty member. From 1989 until 1999 I was Associate Head of the EECS Department. Since 2001 I have been the Director of the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). RLE celebrated its 60th anniversary throughout the 2006-2007 academic year, having been founded immediately after the Second World War to carry on the wartime radar, microwave and communications research that was done in MIT’s Radiation Laboratory. The founding Director of RLE was Julius Stratton, MIT’s president during most of our undergraduate years. I am proud to hold the endowed chair that was named in his honor.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): 1) Learning that President Kennedy had been shot. I was taking an 18.03 quiz in Building 2 and a student was running down the hallway, opening every door, and shouting “The President’s been shot.” 2) Spring weekend ’65 with Ellen. 3) Being in the 6.341 lab in Building 10 when the great northeast power blackout occurred. My oscilloscope trace was impossible to stabilize. I brought the TA over and he said “They must be having a big run at the Magnet Lab.” Immediately after that, all the lights went out. Because the lab looked out over the river, we could see that all of Boston was out too. 4) Late night motor scooter runs to Elsie’s for a roast beef special, a chocolate cake, and a strawberry frappe.

12 Page 13 of 47 Best example of MIT helping career: The Institute taught me to focus on fundamentals and yet pay attention to details. Over the years, most of my research has been done in areas in which I took no classes. My undergraduate (and graduate) studies prepared me, however, to enter and succeed in new areas. Likewise, I have no formal training as a classroom instructor. But, the outstanding quality of the Course VI faculty who taught me led me to emulate their teaching styles. That has been quite effective, as recognized by my Graduate Student Council teaching award.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: MIT should remain the world’s preeminent science and technology school. It should continue to train generations of leaders — for academia, business, and government — and it should focus its efforts on the technological problems that affect the world. Its education should continue to be accessible to all, through need-blind admissions and need-based financial aid.

13 Page 14 of 47

Sharlack, Ron

Your Activities/Interests: After escaping the Tute, I spent the summer trying to market the anti-lock braking system I worked on as an undergraduate. There were a few nibbles from assorted companies, then after 9 months in the land of the lotus eaters and a masters at Stanford, I was able to sell the patent to Kelsey-Hayes. Developing that and other systems for cars and trucks was a great experience and lead to a major turning point in my life.

First a long digression: Spence Sherman ‘67, David Avram ‘67 and I shared a house in Palo Alto during my Stanford days. David had been engaged to Cynthia White (Wellesley College ex-girl friend of Art Warsaw ’67. Gail Migdal, Art's ex-girl friend from LA, went to Wellesley and introduced Art to Cynthia. Gail was in Law School in Berkeley, and visited us in Palo Alto. When Gail learned that I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she told me to look up Betsey Thresher, a friend of Cynthia and Gail who was in graduate school at the U of M. Betsey was supposed to fix me up - and fix me up she did.

Thirty seven years later, Betsey and I are still married. Two sons, Jeremy (born '75) is an Art Director for an advertising company in New York, and Dan (born '78) is about to go to graduate school in psychology in California after counseling street kids on New York's lower eastside. No grandchildren yet, much to Betsey's regret. The house has not been quiet - Betsey's brother died in 1998, then 18 months later his wife died, so in 2000 we were raising children again, this time with twin fifteen years-old boys. One just graduated college; the other is working, attending school part-time and living independently.

Career-wise, I returned to MIT in 1971 and actually learned something before leaving to work for a wide variety of companies in the Boston area. I developed instruments, photovoltaics and co-generation systems, then for the last 17 years I have worked on medical devices, from diagnostics to restoring dental implants. We expect to sell start-up turned to growth stage company I helped grow over the past seven years. It is hard to believe that we are the market and technology leader.

Betsey and I (and expect many of you) recently went through the aging parent(s) syndrome. My empathy to all. Emotion trumps intellect. I was treated for prostate cancer last year, but everything (yes, everything) appears to be OK. All of us have prostate cancer in some form, but fortunately, only a few of us have to do anything about it. I am a windsurfing enthusiast, but also enjoy gardening with Betsey. We also still find time to enjoy Boston's culture of music, theater and art.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Friday morning freshman exams in Walker; getting to my general exams (orals for Ph.D.) on the only day in that era when MIT was actually closed due to snow; and Baker House parties.

Best example of MIT helping career: Professor providing me with contacts (summer job then a job in ) and then his starting a company and providing me a full-time job when I returned from France (and which continued for many years).

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: That the education provided to the students is relevant and helps to make them well-rounded individuals.

Small, James G. Course: VIII

Home Address: 4361 N Wilmot Rd Home City: Tucson State: AZ ZIP: 85750 Home Phone 520-577-7345 Mobile: 520-419-4909 Email: [email protected] Web Page: Business Name: Jim Small Consulting and Retirement Associations Title: Your Activities/Interests: Lieutenant, US Army in 1969-70. Ph.D. from MIT in Physics in 1974. Recently retired from Raytheon after 21 years in the Defense Industry and 14 years as a University Professor. Authored 25 US Patents. A private pilot, I am now building a seaplane in the desert of southern Arizona. Hope to finish in about a year and fly to Canada in the summers and points south in the winters. My goal is to be the nation’s oldest active pilot. We can each reach that goal if we are patient and take turns. The previous record holder was still flying at the age of 103. I am active in my local church. I sing with the Barbershop Harmony Society. I do some part-time consulting for the Defense Industry on matters of Physics, alternative energy, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Gloria Hawkins Small. We met at Park Street Church in Boston and have been married 32 years. Gloria sings with a Sweet Adeline’s International women’s barbershop chorus. She also sings in a new quartet called Spin Zone.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: David and Jonathan, twins. Now 24 years old. Maintenance workers at Raytheon.

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: None in sight.

Additional Narrative: We adopted the twins as babies. They are now fine young men with good values. Genes matter. They came with an assortment of learning disabilities which were first diagnosed around age 5. School was very hard for them. We home schooled and tutored them through various private and public schools. They are not college material. They taught me an enduring lesson. When I was young, my parents told me that if I applied myself and worked hard, I could do almost anything and be proud of what I had done. What I have learned from these young men is that the ability to focus and work hard is a gift to be thankful for rather than an accomplishment to be proud. I met Jesus Christ at MIT. I needed to be redeemed and He has blessed me. I agree heartily with C.S. Lewis, “What we must do, which road we must take to the fountain of life, we know and none who has seriously followed the directions complains that he has been deceived.”

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Freshman year. Grungy Cambridge. Dilapidated dormitory. Fascinating dormmates. Brilliant intellectual environment along with the stress of Friday morning exams.

20 Page 21 of 47 Best example of MIT helping career: I filed my first US Patent while a graduate student at MIT. It was a simple nitrogen laser. The Physics Faculty and the Administration encouraged this small burst of creativity and gave credibility to a new career.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: May MIT continue to be a national and world leader in the search for truth and its practical applications to the benefit of mankind.

Raising our children is the best, most enjoyable thing we have done. Looking forward to the next phase of our lives… Only one replacement part needed so far – a right shoulder joint. Both of my sons have had Testicular Cancer, have your sons check themselves. Best thing about MIT folks? You don’t have to spend time ‘connecting the dots’ for them. I still have a passion for science and math.

Best example of MIT helping career: I’ve made a living from math, modeling, and analytic insights coupled with good business sense. Imagine that your frequency of visits to McDonald’s decays exponentially with your distance to the store. Imagine that 76% of your business comes from 26% of the US population that visits once per week or more. (Like grandma said…In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.)

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: Leadership for our country in the Sciences and Technology. A place for smart people to go and be challenged to do good things.

My business partner (Mike Baird) and I are co-authors of the popular book, “Engineering Your Start-Up: A Guide for the High-Tech Entrepreneur,” (Second Edition.), and I am now completing another book. Sharlotte and I enjoy jogging, hiking, vacationing, and anything having to do with family and friends. Our 40th Reunion became an opportunity for us to vacation in New England for 18 days, and Sharlotte, a California native, is especially eager to lead our explorations.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Sharlotte, a graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA, teaches a fourth grade learning differences class at Los Altos Christian School in Los Altos, California. She loves to cook and take care of her pampered but grateful husband, as well as their overly pampered dog, Rags. Most of her activities revolve around family and friends. She manages to get everyone going for daily jogs or walks. Thank goodness!

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: We have two wonderful sons and one wonderful daughter-in-law. Matt, 29, and his bride, Trinh Phan, are both mechanical engineers at Boeing in Everett, WA, and they recently purchased a home in Mill Creek. Matt graduated from U.C. Berkeley (B.S.) and Stanford (M.S.), and Trinh from MIT (B.S.) and Stanford (M.S.)

Our younger son, Tommy, 26, is finishing his first year of medical school at College of Medicine in the Bronx, and will be joining us for part of our New England vacation. He graduated from U.C. San Diego and served for two years in the U.S. Peace Corps as a science and math teacher in Malawi.

We love to visit our kids!

27 Page 28 of 47

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: Stay tuned. In the meantime, Sharlotte are willing to take on board any spare grandchildren you may have.

Additional Narrative: May our next 40 years be as good as the last 40. See you at our 80th!

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies):: Incredible friendships that became lifelong friendships. Host of MIT-style recreational activities, including Phi Sig “Hare and Hound Chase,” and Frosh/Soph Field Days. Wonderful opportunities to learn and explore. Doc Edgerton. Dean Fassett. The Kennedy assassination … well, that’s enough.

Best example of MIT helping career: I suspect most of us underestimate the value of the MIT “brand,” which I’m certain opened many doors and on countless occasions eliminated the need for “check list” questions regarding competency and intelligence. MIT’s best gift to me is my daughter-in-law, Trinh Phan, Class of 2000.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: I hope MIT will greatly strengthen and expand its leadership role in promoting world peace and understanding, in countering the effects of global warming, and in improving the health, security and well being of all of God’s children, especially the two billion most in need, wherever they may reside.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Celebrating 21st birthday at nearby bar with fraternity brothers….. Our group sat at a booth next to a group of characters that had their knuckles taped…whatever that meant. One of the brothers had the good sense to insult the taped-knuckle group. As we left the bar, we were blind-sided and down we went, learning why the knuckles were taped. A larger group of brothers then went to exact revenge and were met with flying chairs. That night, we ended up in second place, with some lessons well learned.

Best example of MIT helping career: The reputation associated with being an MIT graduate allowed us to pretty much select from a wide variety of top starting positions throughout the country. There never was a question of whether one would receive an offer after (usually during) an interview; it simply boiled down to making a choice of many excellent offers. Then throughout one’s career, the MIT tag alone resulted in an expectation of performance.

Your Activities/Interests: With my wife, Elena Gostjeva, I continue the lifelong exploration of the cells that drive organogenesis, carcinogenesis and atherogenesis with emphasis on the cascade of genetic mutations that appear to be required for the latter two. Elena discovered some curious cells in those lineages that divide symmetrically and asymmetrically without mitosis, the first such finding of cells with stem-like properties. We named them “metakaryotes”. They evolved as the cells of the developmental lineage before plants and animals separated in evolution. My students and I have found that the mutations of these cells in tissues like the lung don’t continue in adults. Our data indicate that the mutations that drive atherosclerotic plaque and preneoplastic lesions occur from early fetal life through our juvenile years. The pattern of these mutations are those we see in vitro just copying our DNA with normal human DNA polymerases. One never knows.

I am looking to get a vaccine technology effort going again at MIT. Invitations from Thailand and the Philippines make it seem that the technology for viral vaccine production we developed in the 70s and 80s may make a major contribution in providing vaccines for dengue fever and influenza. Our other interests center around raising our three younger children, Feodor, 22, Walter, 8, and Audrey, 5.

Spouse’s Name & Interests: Elena Gostjeva and I celebrate our tenth anniversary this year after meeting in Sweden in 1996. We share a variety of kids, scientific interests and remarkably similar preferences in red wine. Lena was born a Soviet citizen near Yalta in the Crimea on the Black Sea; she swims better than some seals. She started into genetics when she was thirteen. Her grandmother, Anotonina, received a bullet in the head for being a Soviet geneticist in 1941 when Lysenko’s crackpot theories had Stalin executing all the geneticists the NKVD could find. Her Americanization will never be complete and her way of looking at things is a source of wonder and inspiration to me every day.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: Alexei, 45, is head of internal security for the autonomous republic of the Crimea in Ukraine. Willy, 33, is working as a comedian in California. Grethe, 31, continues in the web site business in Boston. Feodor is a junior at the University of New Hampshire. Walter, 8, is in the third grade loves school and soccer. Audrey, 5, starts kindergarten in the fall and is also pretty smart and fast. We bike and canoe with the little ones and make many trips to Wingarsheek Beach. Walter did 100 miles with me on the AT when he was six and I’m taking him and Audrey out for a week or so this summer, too.

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: Anna, Alexei’s daughter, 22, just graduated from the University of Cimpheropol, (capitol of Crimea) from which Elena and both of her parents graduated. It was loaded with talented faculty who were sent to the boonies because they were not devout enough Communists.

32 Page 33 of 47 Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Figuring out how to maintain synchronous division of human cells in culture. (1970) Leading the MIT Rugby Football Club into a series of undefeated seasons. (Former motto: Win one, lose some.) (1967-71) Getting that acceptance letter December 1962. No more cleaning chicken coops for a living!

Best example of MIT helping career: They gave me a job which I kept.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: Regain a reputation not just for “competitive” and “promising” research but for “contributing” research in human health and well being.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Completing BS Thesis and immediately driving out of Boston. Physics labs at MIT were great!

Best example of MIT helping career: Could not understand physics courses taught from Feynman Lecture Series. Had to learn how to teach myself various topics in the engineering library. This self-teaching helped prepare me to become an independent inventor. During last several years at MIT, minimized spending time in class and maximized self-learning in the libraries.

35 Page 36 of 47 Fondest hope for MIT’s future: More relevant and humane undergraduate experiences. Hope MIT’s well publicized efforts to reduce its high suicide rate are successful. For those fellow classmates who have been touched by this might wish to refer to the article entitled “Covering Suicides in ”, by Beckett W. Sterner, The Tech, Volume 126, Issue 9, March 7, 2006, a copy of which appears online at http://www- tech.mit.edu/V126/N9/sterner.html.

Additional Narrative: I have published several textbooks that are in use in colleges throughout the world. However, my most recent book entitled “An Improbable Life” is of a different nature and it has some interesting nostalgia for MIT graduates. It is the true story of an MIT graduate who, at age 17, had quit high school twice and landed in prison with a two-year sentence. The young man served one year during which he completed 10th and 11th grades and decided he wanted to attend MIT. After completing high school, he indeed made it to MIT and eventually went on to earn a PhD from Caltech. Just before graduating from MIT, he received a full pardon from the governor of his state who, ironically, had been the judge who sentenced the young man to prison. He founded an aerospace company when he was just 29. This story has served as a 37 Page 38 of 47 source of inspiration for wayward youths with whom this MIT/Caltech graduate has worked on a volunteer basis. The book will appear in June 2007. A signed and numbered copy can be ordered at http://www.dcwindustries.com.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies): Being voted “power tool of the year” by my East Campus friends in my freshman year. Completing my course work in three years and graduating a year early in 1966

Best example of MIT helping career: When I walk into any DoD office sseking R&D contracts, my brass rat has always added instant credibility to my presentation (an Air Force Colonel told me that many years ago)

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: I hope MIT always maintains the standard of engineering education excellence that I was so fortunate to receive in my formative years.

Children’s Name(s) & Interests: Douglas – Recent Va. Tech grad.-- sports, outdoor activities, video games Juliana – Still in college -- cooking, water sports, Lacrosse,

Grandchildren’s Name(s) & Interests: Not yet

Additional Narrative: We got fed up with the rat race of Northern VA after 28 years; 2 1/2 years ago we built a house in rural, Gloucester, VA, on the water. We love it here! Like America was 50 years ago – peaceful, neighborly, un-crowded, don’t even have to lock our doors, but less than an hour from real civilization and airports such as may be had in Richmond and Newport News. The place fairly drips with history – Jamestown, Yorktown, Williamsburg, the various Civil War battlefields; Pocahontas was born in Gloucester.

I am still working up in Maryland, which makes for an onerous commute, but have reasonable prospects for “rewirement” closer to home sometime in the next year or two. Am finishing up building Karen a 17’ electric launch, circa 1910 look, for her and her girlfriends to cruise down the river – surrey top, 12 V blender, stereo – 39 Page 40 of 47 a party boat! Also building spec houses as a job to ease into as part of the rewirement. We shall see what the next five years bring. BTW -- Had a grand time at our recent Tech reunion.

Most Vivid MIT Memory(ies) Sailing the Charles on warm, breezy, Spring afternoons; Glee Club weekend performances with Wellesley, Douglass, and Smith glee clubs; fraternity (Phi Delta Theta) events, especially All Tech Sing; the Hart Nautical Museum; schlepping across the Harvard Bridge to & from classes; relaxing on hot summer days in the cool breeze of the Wright Bros. Wind Tunnel when we were supposed to be testing sail models for Halsey Herreshoff; trying to get my decrepit Honda motorcycle into operating condition in the basement shop of Bldg. 2; sheer terror facing some of those physics and calculus exams.

Best example of MIT helping career Prospective employers’ seeing MIT on my resume! Substantively, the main thing I learned at MIT was how to solve complex problems – break them down into manageable ones, solve them and put them back together. Works for almost anything.

Fondest hope for MIT’s future: Leave the political correctness behind and get on with the primary mission of producing the engineers and scientists America so desperately needs.
