OUR OPINION The road to space

t first blush you might not see Lake City as a player in the space race, but it could A happen. Just ask Staz Guntek II, legislative assistant to state Rep. Chuck Brannan. In Thursday’s paper, Mr. Guntek explained that while we might never launch a rocket in Columbia County, there’s little reason we couldn’t establish a logistics hub to help supply the grow- ing space industry. “Trillions of dollars will be poured into this over the next decade, and it would be a good oppor- tunity to get on the ground floor as a new space industry is emerging,” Guntek told our reporter. He almost makes it sound like a no-brainer, and maybe it is. Imagine if, after decades of crowing about the 1967: Top of the heap in football county’s strategic location between two interstate highways, with two Class A rail lines and a gem of an airport, we began to make use of these assets on a truly out-of-this-world endeavor? Leading up to that game, there were reports of a post-practice fight between freshman quarterback Garrett Shrader and starting linebacker Willie Gay that left Shrader injured. Moorhead didn’t confirm a fight or details of Shrader’s injury, but did say before the bowl game that the two players had spoken to each other and the issue was addressed internally. Shrader had been slated to start, but did not play against Louisville. “Is it the (only) factor? No,” Cohen said regarding how much of an impact the reports of a fight had on his decision. “But it is a factor, one of several factors.” Cohen said associate head coach Tony Hughes will serve as interim head coach while the school searches for a permanent successor. Cohen said he would hire a search firm “to get us some back- ground information” but added that the search firm would “have no bearing on candidates or decisions to be made.” During the news conference, Cohen discussed the attributes he’s seeking in selecting a coach. “It’s going to have to start with discipline,” Cohen said. “It’s going to have to start with having a hard edge. It’s going to start with helping student-athletes grow both on and off the field. It’s going to start with somebody who has a passion for Mississippi State specifically.” 6B SATURDAY/SUNDAY, JANUARY 4-5, 2020 SPORTS LAKE CITY REPORTER

Super Saturday, the last Saturday for shopping before Christmas, was a popular sales day across the nation, surpassing sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Several local merchants also saw an increase in sales activity on Super Saturday as shoppers came in waves to purchase Christmas gifts. Linda Dowling, Chastain Jewelers manager, said Super Saturday was a busy day for Chastain Jewelers that even eclipsed its Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. “It was very good — much better than Cyber Monday ever was, and we did better than we did Black Friday.” Dowling said popular sales items included fine jewelry — gold chains, tennis bracelets and cross pendants. “It’s gone back to old school jew- elry, so we had a lot more of those kinds of sales than we had in the last few years,” she said. FAMILY FEATURES ervice dogs offer countless benefits to help combat symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but they can also be instrumental in rebuilding and uniting Sfamilies after veterans come home from serving their country. According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 30% of American military veterans experience PTSD after returning home from combat. Yet only about 40% of those individuals ever seek help. Service animals are recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The designation is limited to dogs who are trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. In some cases, these tasks are highly physical in nature, such as guiding a person who is blind or pulling a wheelchair. Other roles service dogs play may be less immediately visible, such as providing a calming presence to a person with PTSD who is experiencing an anxiety attack.
