  • Historical Background to Charismatic Theology & Practice
Historical Background To Charismatic Theology & Practice Introduction This section is very important because it is necessary to understand where the main features of Charismatic churches come from. The Biblical principle is very clear, a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. We need to know what the root systems underlying Charismatic things really are. It matters nothing if Charismatics point to this or that piece of good fruit; if the root is poisonous then even the fruit that looks edible will damage people. Charismatics will claim that the root is God’s word and God’s Spirit. So do the Mormons, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Moonies, the Christian Scientists and so on. We look at Biblical theology elsewhere; but here we want to see what the precursors of Charismatic theology and practice really are. Modern Charismatic churches differ very greatly from historic churches, or even from conservative evangelical churches today; they clearly cannot be from the same stock. Here we can only evaluate some key movements and do so briefly. The underlying thesis of this section is the great battle of history. From the Fall onwards there has been vigorous spiritual warfare between the work of God and the attacks of the enemy of God, Satan. This is manifested in numerous ways, but here I want to concentrate on a key issue. Satan counterfeits God’s work since there is an innate desire in men to worship God and to be part of a religion. Even modern atheists do this, such as those who worship at the feet of Darwinian evolutionary theory, which is basically a faith-system about origins.

Cloud 4 Introduction Te International House of Prayer (IHOP) is a global charismatic youth movement with wide infuence. It believes itself to be the cusp of an end-time miracle revival movement that will eventually result in the return of Christ. (Afer a threatened lawsuit by the International House of Pancakes, the International House of Prayer began using the moniker IHOPKS for International House of Prayer Kansas City.) IHOP was founded in 1999 by Mike Bickle (b. 1955). Seventeen years earlier, Bickle had founded the Kansas City Fellowship afer allegedly hearing an audible voice of God inviting him to “raise up a work that will touch the ends of the earth.” He was joined by men such as Bob Jones, John Paul Jackson, Paul Cain, David Parker, and Francis Frangipane, who were promoted as prophets of a latter-day miracle revival movement.

Knowing in your heart that you are born-again, and followed by a statement of faith are the two prerequisites to studying and getting the most out of your MSBT materials. We have developed this material to educate each Believer in the principles of God. Our goal is to provide each Believer with an avenue to enrich their personal lives and bring them closer to God. Is Jesus your Lord and Savior? If you have not accepted Him as such, you must be aware of what Romans 3:23 tells you. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God: How do you go about it? You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I John 5:13 gives an example in which to base your faith. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. What if you are just not sure? Romans 10:9-10 gives you the Scriptural mandate for becoming born-again.
