North Carolina Community College System College and Career Readiness Adult Secondary Education Content Standards Level 5, Grade Levels 9.0 – 12.9 Prepared by: Dianne B. Barber & Steven J. Schmidt Adult Basic Skills Professional Development Appalachian State University Boone, NC Prepared for: North Carolina Community College System Department of College and Career Readiness September 2014 Introduction This notebook contains standards to help instructors understand what adult secondary students should know and be able to do in the four content areas of language arts, math, science, and social studies. Adult secondary students function in grade level equivalents 9.0 to 12.9 and study in adult high school diploma and high school equivalency programs. These standards should guide programs as they create and align their curricula. Language Arts and Math Standards The language arts and math standards come from the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCR) which were released by The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) in April 2013. The CCR Standards were distilled from the Common Core State Standards and reflect the essential skills and knowledge that adult students should have to be prepared for postsecondary education and training, work, and citizenship. The CCR standards recognize that adult learners need a manageable set of standards since adult learners usually attend class less than 100 hours over the course of a program year, have some prior schooling, and benefit from previous life experiences. Language arts encompass standards from speaking and listening, reading, writing, and language. Students are expected to read increasingly complex texts and gain the ability to evaluate arguments while understanding challenging works. Writing standards guide students as they learn to create arguments and write informative, explanatory, and narrative texts. Language standards provide rules for written and spoken English as well as for acquiring new vocabulary. The language arts and math standards have both been divided into four parts based on the North Carolina Community College System Career and College Readiness Adult Secondary Education Credential courses facilitated by Adult Basic Skills Professional Development at Appalachian State University. These divisions are as follows, and each course covers these topics: Language Arts ASE LA 1-Production and Distribution of Writing: How to write informative and narrative texts ASE LA 2-Using Research in Writing Endeavors: How to conduct research, evaluate sources and create argument based writing ASE LA 3-Understanding and Analyzing Literature: How to analyze and understand literature including poetry and prose ASE LA 4-Understanding and Analyzing Informational Texts: How to analyze and understand informative texts Math ASE MA 1-Algebraic Concepts and Expressions: How to understand and solve radical expressions along with performing operations on polynomial and rational expressions ASE MA 2-Algebraic Equations and Inequalities: How to create, represent, explain, and solve algebraic equations and inequalities ASE MA 3-Algebraic Functions and Models: How to interpret and evaluate functions and model mathematical expressions in various forms ASE MA 4-Geometry, Probability, and Statistics: How to interpret and solve problems in geometry, probability, and statistics Science and Social Studies Standards As the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education only cover math and language arts, the science and social studies standards are based on the North Carolina Essential Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. The Essential Standards guide secondary instruction for North Carolina high school students and were developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. These Essential Standards were adopted to ensure the most rigorous and relevant standards to guide instruction for 21st Century students. The Next Generation Science Standards were developed by teams of writers from 26 states. The standards include the core ideas science students should know, the practices scientists engage in as they work, and the crosscutting concepts that link the different domains of science. The science and social studies standards have both been divided into four parts based on the North Carolina Community College System Career and College Readiness Adult Secondary Education Credential courses facilitated by Adult Basic Skills Professional Development at Appalachian State University. These divisions are as follows: Science ASE SC 1-Living Organisms and Ecosystems: How to understand various life forms as they interact with each other across the Earth ASE SC 2-Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Evolution: How genetic material and molecules function on Earth ASE SC 3-Physical Science: How to conduct scientific inquiry while understanding the physical principles and chemistry of the natural world ASE SC 4-Environmental, Earth and Space Science: How the atmosphere, hydrosphere, oceans, and biosphere work together on Earth and other planets Social Studies ASE SS 1-US History (Colonial Period to 1877): How to understand, see the relevance of, and think about the major events in United States history from early exploration through Reconstruction ASE SS 2-Modern US History (1877 to the Present): How to understand, see the relevance of, and think about the major events in United States history from Reconstruction through recent events ASE SS 3-Civics and Economics: How to understand and apply fundamental concepts in civics and economics including personal finance applications ASE SS 4-World History: How to understand, see the relevance of, and think about the major events in world history from the mid-1500s through recent events All areas of the Adult Secondary Education Standards have checklists that both instructors and students can use to track their progress of standard mastery. These checklists appear at the end of each of the four major sections. The standards ask students to learn to work together, express and listen carefully to ideas, integrate information from oral, visual, quantitative, and media sources, evaluate what they hear, use media and visual displays strategically to help achieve communicative purposes, and adapt speech to context and task. These standards should be integrated though out Language Arts instruction. CCR Anchor 1: Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher- led) with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. a. Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas. b. Work with peers to set rules for collegial discussions and decision-making (e.g., informal consensus, taking votes on key issues, presentation of alternate views), clear goals and deadlines, and individual roles as needed. c. Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions. d. Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views and understanding and make new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented. (SL.9-10.1) CCR Anchor 2: Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data. FJournalism’s problems were further exacerbated by the global economic downturn in 2008, which resulted in even more cuts to newsroom resources. Staff downsizing and budget reductions have forced reporters and editors to do more with less and impacted both the depth and breadth of reporting at many outlets. This report set out to understand how coverage of U global health issues might have fallen victim to the overall problems facing journalism and whether this beat faced unique T challenges of its own. I V E S Interviews with 51 stakeholders in global health journalism—reporters, editors and producers in either mainstream media or at specialized outlets like trade and policy publications; freelance writers and broadcasters; writers and editors of global health advocacy outlets as well as peer-reviewed journals; and funders of journalism—provided a window into was happening in global health journalism in the U.S.

Cycles of continuity and change are preferred topics in the fields of history, economics, and international relations. Although centred on the past, the long cycles theory in general, and George Modelski's model in particular, might offer valuable insights into probable futures that might be involved in the planning practice of international actors. By identifying recurring historical patterns, one could extrapolate future developments. However, the key assumption of the paper is that possible novel developments are bound to be influenced by a series of drivers, both trends and wild cards. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the predictive capacity of the long cycle theory by using future study methodologies. The present paper attempts to suggest some ways for doing that in a two-step progressive method. The first step is to identify the most important drivers that could trigger deviations from the extrapolation of historical patterns identified by the long cycles theory and to quantify the expected shifts in the distribution power by using four indexes: the Foreign Bilateral Influence Capacity (FBIC) Index, the Global Power Index (GPI), the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the State of the Future Index (SOFI).

In the lecture, we discussed Mendel's experiments with garden peas in which he considered one character (e.g. ower color or seed shape). In a second step, he considered two characters simultaneously. He started with two pure lines. One had yellow (dominant allele Y ), wrinkled (recessive allele r) seeds. The other had green (recessive allele y), round (dominant allele R) seeds. I.e. the genotypes of these pure lines were Y Y rr and yyRR. He crossed these two lines to obtain the F1 generation. He then obtained the F2 generation through selng of individuals from the F1 generation. Draw the corresponding Punnett square to determine the genotypes and phenotypes that are generated in this way. What are the proportions of the observed phenotypes if you determine proportions by counting the respective cells in the Punnett square? Mendel indeed observed these proportions. However, in 1905, William Bateson, Edith Re- becca Saunders, and Reginald Punnett performed a similar experiment in sweet pea plants. They simultaneously considered ower color and pollen shape and found dierent proportions than Mendel. How can this discrepancy be explained? This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

    Punnett Square The Punnett Square was created in the early 1900s by Reginald Punnett. Punnett was born in 1875 and was the eldest of three children. He grew up in England and was fascinated by the natural sciences at an early age. When he was young, he was often stricken by appendix issues and had to stay quiet during recovery. During one particular recovery period, he spent a large amount of time reading his father’s library on natural history, which sparked his interest and had a lasting impact on his career choices (Crew 1967). As Punnett continued his love for science, he eventually became one of the first scientists to study genetics at Cambridge University and helped to establish the field there. He spent a significant amount of time conducting genetics research with the leading scientists of his day, including William Bateson and G. H. Hardy (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory 2011). Together they were strong proponents of the genetic work of Gregor Mendel, who today is credited as the father of genetics. In 1905, Punnett devised what is known today as the Punnett Square (Arizona State University 2012). The Punnett Square is used to illustrate some of Mendel’s discoveries including the segregation of DNA into different gametes upon gamete formation. The Punnett Square was designed as a teaching tool and is still used in classrooms today. The premise is simple; the genetic contribution of the two individuals under study is listed on each side of the square. For example, we are to cross two sweet pea individuals that have the genotypes Gg and gg.

The human society from incalculable period had suffered untold hardships arising from crises of varying dimensions such as the Cyprus, Chaco, Vietnam, Kosovo and world wars land II to mention afew. Against this background, at the conclusion of world wars II as a result of the failure of the League of Nations to avert that war, the United Nations Organization was born in 1945to restore International Peace and Security and prevent further regional and global wars. In recent times, there have been crisis in Liberia, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Egjpt etc despising collective security of the UN- Security Council. The purview of this paper therefore, is to examine the socio-political environments that facilitate these cleavages and uncertainties. The author observed that the weakness of the council to confront new realities in terms of desire for good governance and democracy and economic amancipation by the emerging states of Africa makes crises and insecurity to be of contemporary relevance in the region. The researcher observed further that there is a shfi of power for peace and security from the traditional Security Coi€ncil to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

It is mandatory that it be thoroughly studied." Sun Tzu, The Art of War In this seminar we undertake a comprehensive review of the theoretical and empirical literature on interstate war, focusing primarily on the causes of war and the conditions of peace but giving some attention to the conduct and termination of war. We emphasize research in political science but include some coverage of work in other disciplines. We examine the leading theories, their key causal variables, the paths or mechanisms through which those variables lead to war or to peace, and the degree of empirical support for various theories. Our survey includes research utilizing a variety of methodological approaches: qualitative, quantitative, experimental, formal, and experimental. Our primary focus, however, is on the logical coherence and analytic limitations of the theories and the kinds of research designs that might be useful in testing them. The seminar is designed primarily for graduate students who want to understand – and ultimately contribute to – the theoretical and empirical literature in political science on war, peace, and security. Students with different interests and students from other departments can also benefit from the seminar and are also welcome. Ideally, members of the seminar will have some familiarity with basic issues in international relations theory, philosophy of science, research design, and statistical methods.
